According to Hindu religion, exchange of garlands between 2 people on special "auspicious" times makes them married.

If you mean the little dance scene, where Sanjay Dutt danced to the tunes of drums it was a ritual performed at Durga Puja (worship of Goddess Durga) - the biggest Bengali festival

I love the part from 6:20 to 6:50..Its definitely not your regular "best friends don't know they are lovers" kinda flick and the difference is VIDYA BALAN.Just Love this scene -- Shekhar is very lucky to have her.

The film is different to the novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the book Lolita (Lalita) is only fourteen & when she garlands Shekar(an adult), it is an innocent act on her behalf; she completely loves him (& he her, which he fights) & to characterise her as a sl*t, is a silly juvenile remark. The book is only 91 pages & is an interesting read, different to the film adapation eg Lolita (Lalita) & Shekar don't finally reunite until four years after she garlands him and Navin is dead.
