  • Pardon me, but what does con 'hold' stand for?

  • @67nairb That "hold" you mentioned is a shorted version of 'holding on to a seat' : a seat is a metaphor for a Parliamentary constituency: so called because members occupy 'seats' in the House of Commons. This sitting member, therefore, is one who is already elected; that person has been re-elected and so 'holds on to their seat' If they had been defeated they would have been unseated: lost their seat. "Con" is short for the Conservative political party to which the member belongs :-)

  • @elrjames777 Thanks for the info.

  • @67nairb It means that this seat was last held by a member of the Conservative party, and is again 'held' by a Conservative.

  • finchley , heartland of the conservatives!

  • bless her tiny black heart.

  • The Iron Lady......if they only knew in 1974......but that was yet to come and the wonderful years of Thatcherism!

  • Is it me or does Thatch have a higher voice here than when she was prime minister?

  • @AidanLunn nope, not just you! She had voice and tv training from Sir Gordon Reece

  • @AidanLunn yeah - she went through very intense training to lower her voice

  • Love that the returning officer chokes as he's tries to say the evil one's name!

  • @JKMMOC Go Maggie! Take 'em all on!

  • Martin O'Connor was my beloved uncle. He reduced Thatchers majority hugely and edged out the Lib Dems. Finchley was an incredibly Tory seat, and Labour didn't normally stand a hope in hell.

Martins charisma and belief shone and won through.....an amazing and wonderful person....

  • That was my Dad coming second! In October 1974 he cut Thatcher's majority to 3000 and she considered finding a new seat.

  • i live near finchely

  • Wonderful day!!!!
