Pardon me, but what does con 'hold' stand for?

@67nairb That "hold" you mentioned is a shorted version of 'holding on to a seat' : a seat is a metaphor for a Parliamentary constituency: so called because members occupy 'seats' in the House of Commons. This sitting member, therefore, is one who is already elected; that person has been re-elected and so 'holds on to their seat' If they had been defeated they would have been unseated: lost their seat. "Con" is short for the Conservative political party to which the member belongs :-)

Martin O'Connor was my beloved uncle. He reduced Thatchers majority hugely and edged out the Lib Dems. Finchley was an incredibly Tory seat, and Labour didn't normally stand a hope in hell.

Martins charisma and belief shone and won through.....an amazing and wonderful person....

That was my Dad coming second! In October 1974 he cut Thatcher's majority to 3000 and she considered finding a new seat.
