People are funny.. they say they know what the words mean and then they clearly show they have no idea. Maybe they should listen to the words coming out of Bono's mouth again instead of hatin' in his face. Besides if you took the time to research where Bono came from, you might realize that there isn't blue l.e.d lights and daddies pay check in every persons childhood.
Bono was good mates with Bukowski so you Bono haters can all go fuck yourself. Bukowski went to see U2 and Bono dedicated a song to him. Usually the people who hate on Bono are selfish music snobs who have never done anything for humanity. Jesus man... live and let live.
@Burncourtable You sure about that? In the Doc Born into This it was Bukowski's wife Linda who was the U2 fan. and In one of his novels(Hollywood?) Bukowski takes a veiled jab at Bono. I don't think they were mates... Sean Penn was but not Bono. Hank had better taste than that... which is more than i can say for most people.
Bono---'Bukowski's an incredible character. He came to see us play. He said {adopts gravelly American accent), "I haven't been to a rock show since the early '70s", and Larry sang "Dirty Old Town" for him and dedicated it to him. And he is this 75-year-old hard-ass with tears in his eyes.
Bono should not recite Roll the Dice. He may appreciate the words but he's never been there... it comes off disingenuous and soft, like a school teacher. I doubt Bono has experienced anything in the poem. Like Bukowski said himself, You gotta scream while you burn.
You doubt Bono experienced anything in the poem??? Do you even understand what this poem tries to convey?
It is the story of Bono's life, and I'm saying that while not even being a big fan of the man...
It is about leading life without fear, doing something with belief and steely determination. Not making calculations and obeying to comfort only... Do you think Bono would come to the place where he is now if he hadn't followed the philosophy this poem is preaching?
There's not much that Tom does that I don't like. I think that everything that he does is genuine or he just doesn't do it. Bono, on the other hand...is someone making him read this? He has all the passion of a burned out high school counselor talking to his 38th kid of the day. Wasn't he supposed to be out somewhere saving the fucking world or some shit anyway? I'd like to smack those Italian sunglasses off of his smug face.
Well said! I hate that no talent cunt too! Bukowski deserves better than Bono! I think Tom Waits is worthy too read Buck though. Tom is a great artis. But FUCK BONO!!!!!!
If Bukowski himself doesn't count, I couldn't imagine anyone more capable to read his poems than Tom Waits. He's rough voice suits perfectly to the hidden wisdom and beauty of these masterpieces. He's voice, I would say, brings them alive in a magnificent, masculine way. BUT NO, NO! Not Bono, NO! For all the goodness that's left in this world, this obnoxious hypocritical bastard shouldn't be reading this out loud. No, no, no... Son of a bitch raped the king of undeground.
Now children....Lets pick the difference.....heart and soul, true appreciation and then....Go all the way indeed....Not eating for three or four days does not mean doing the 40hr famine....Hideous!

both were excellent readings, imo. calling bono a waste of space is out of line. last i checked they asked him to read and not you. think about why that is, and maybe you'll realize that the answer is in the poem he read.
Actually they did ask me to read but I was busy that day, so I think they got Bonohead to stand in for me. Having watched it I really should have cancelled my plans and carried out the reading myself.
Roll the Dice reminds me of a book I just read. Rorschach's Ribs by Marcus Eder. The main character has a poem by Bukowski tattooed on his arm. And I think Bukowski is my new favorite poet. Sorry Dylan Thomas.
It was a Bukowski documentary. Almost everytime I watch a documentary about a great artist I think, "I wish a great artist would have made this", and that's what I thought when I watched it, for what it's worth, which isn't much.
May we learn from the haters destructive nature and inevitable lack of accomplishments.

For fucks sake why is Bono there. When he reads it he's giving it fake emotion. He probably doesn't even know what the poem is about.
