It wasn't the Black Album that was #1 on the charts at that point, it was that piece of shit Billy Ray Cyrus album (ironically, Mustaine sat there and allowed his daughter to be a fan of Billy Ray's daughter...though I think Pam had something to do with that)

as much as i love metallica, they really sucked when kirk cut his hair short. thats around the time they turned pop. but they are better now. i love both metallica and megadeth cus sometimes im in the mood for the really heavy thrash speed metal(megadeth) and others im in for the still heavy but softer and slower metallica. both are equally in my mind my favorite two metal bands ever!

Metallica's albums are decent it's only natural that a band wants to change at some point later on. It's what keeps the chemistry flowing. If they repeated themselves then they begin to lose their fan base. It's the same with Megadeth too, although they seem to have always stayed good. As a band you'll never please everybody,

you're better off doing what you want and seeing who cares

They didn't change to pop, they changed to a more defined Hard Rockish type sound, there's a lot more of a Blues influence in those albums. Megadeth changed after Countdown stripping their sound down completely. Listen to Youthanasia that's essentially Hard Rock based. And Cryptic Writings is even more stripped. I own all Megadeth and Metallica's albums, so I've done my homework!

They can only keep up the loud aggressive metalhead for so long, afterward it starts to get old. Take the time to appreciate the band's music rather than the genre. I have, I love the bands for their music and their music alone. I could care less if it were thrash, speed hard rock or whatever. The musicianship qualities both bands have are brilliant.
