"The winter it is past and the summers come at last and the small bird sings on every tree. The hearts of these are glad but mine is very sad for I did not win the lottery" --- Robert Burns
I've just found you and have been showing your Vlogs to my husband's HS students who will be performing in THE FRINGE this August. I love your work! I can't find out who sings, "I'm a stranger to this country, from A-Mer-I-Kay I came"...what is that? LOVE IT!
The song you're asking about is called "The American Stranger" by the Tannahill Weavers. It's off their album Land of Light. I *highly* reccomend all of their work.
Well done Iain, I have seen a few of your video blogs now. I have to say that I find them very interesting indeed. Please keep making them. I'm so glad you enjoyed Edinburgh, and thanks for liking a couple of our tunes enough to use them on your blogs. See you in E'boro one of those days. All the best to you. Roy "Tannahill" Gullane.
thank you - I'm really glad you liked it! I actually grew up on your music (Land of Light was my first cd) and I saw you in concert in Minnesota a year ago. The internet never ceases to amaze me. Slàinte!
-Completely agree on the identity thing. 20yrs in America + me as a person = America is my home, I love it, I am an American, etc. etc. Whatever the hell that means. But it doesn't negate my heritage either... I am still Irish (among other things), even though I'm definitely not Irish-Irish... hm... such convoluted identities we have :)
I WILL SEE YOU IN < 1 MONTH!!! Merriment, festivities, etc.!!
Iain... that was genuinely moving. I can get a feel for how wonderful this has been for you...!!!
A few spastic notes:
-YES COFFEE SHOPS -- it's the same here. They don't *really* have them, they only have a few of these different things that are themed and overpriced and lack that homey, relaxed, coffeeshop intellectualism...
-Was that Tannahill Weavers doing that "I've come from 'Meirice to travel far and wide..." song?
Ok. Comment take two. This was great. This whole project was great. I especially liked the labyrinth bit tying the montage together. I think it's gonna be harder for you to leave Scotland than it'll be for most of the rest of us to leave our study abroad countries. But I'm so excited to see you! Mwah!
