  • hahahaha my gosh 0:43 star wars ships from death star

  • This deserves to be remade on 3DS. That would be really cool!

  • is it me, or does stage 2 sound like Charlie's Angels?

  • talk about a badass soundtrack...oh the memories

  • 8:41 brings back so many memories, that was me constantly when I had this game.

  • @2010string Oh thanks. I often wondered about it.

  • There is something kinda mysterious about this game.

When you access the sound test menu using the cheats, play the following soundtracks sequentially:7, 4, 3, 7, 4, 8 and then exit. a strange, hidden message will be displayed, anybody knows? what is it in aid of?

  • how did they get the rights to use tie fighters..lol loved this game. i have this i have the first one. i have the sequel on genesis and the port of part one for the gba on that genesis 4 pack.

  • Space Harrier theme is used as a japanese SMS boot-up song?

  • The SMS was way ahead of its time. It's too bad that only a couple of games took great advantage of the 3D glasses. This was not one of them but as a huge Space Harrier fan I wish it was otherwise. The only good thing about this game is the stage 2 music. Had that tune in my head for 22 years now...

  • That one of an ugly looking game

  • wow, have video games come a long way.... I remember when this was state of the art :)

  • this the sound of sms japenese version

  • this game scared the shit out of me when i was a young kid, still vividly remember the soundtrack though <3

  • Dang it! I lost my Glasses about 20 years ago...must backtrack my steps day by day so i can find them because i must experience this video with all of its glory it has to offer!

  • @ClassicTVMan81 Oh....Dang it! I was at year 12 with tracing each step to 20 years ago. oh well....

  • @921144666

Sorry, I have to retract my original comment: the PBC actually did have a jack for the 3D glasses, according to Wikipedia.

  • @ClassicTVMan81 Nice...I can continue on to year 13! Beat the orignal once because I did the bonus stage trick to get extra men, which i needed in the later teen stages. It was a challenge...thats a fact!

  • @921144666 Any pair of LCD 3D Glasses with a jack will work with the adapter.

  • This game would have been fucking awesome if it wasn't for the horrible frame rate.

  • Yeah, I totally agree that this is the most difficult of all the Harrier games for the reasons mentioned and for the fact that when continuing you have to go back to the start of the level you continued on. Terrible on level twelve and thirteen or when your battling against Dark Uriah. But I also like it for this challenge factor.

  • i had this game. Didn't have the 3d shades though. The game was extremely fast.

  • I had this game. The animation in horrible!

  • I could see sega realseing something like this on a GBA or DS... everyone who would by this would be pissed off!

  • crappy masking of the trees :S

  • only finished the first space harrier on game gear when i was about 8

  • The musicis so damn happy, I love how perky the music is in most 8-bit action games

  • Are you playing this on a japanies sms.

I love this game alot in sonics ulimate genisis coletion.

  • my dad played in arcade

  • you just cant judge whats gonna happen on this game, things in the distance are ok but as soon as objects come any closer they jump half the screen and smash into you, you just have no clue, still it stands miles over the 2d version

  • That's why there are 3D-Glasses. And a 2D-Mode you can activate.

  • yeah, i know, i own the game and the glasses, i just find the space harrier games frustrating because things jerk towards you as apposed to fly in smoothly from the distance

  • Yes, that's true. And it's especially a problem that you can't see the distances properly. Sometimes you think it's still away from you and then it hits you.

  • exactly

  • Totally agree. There are even cases where avoiding enemy fire is seemingly impossible, whereas you MUST destroy the enemy before it fires at you. Bosses do this too in the later levels. The boss at level 8 is a perfect example, as the final assault of his attack WILL hit you regardless of whether you are moving up or down. It must be dodged horizontally.

  • i never managed to get that far into it lol, instead of being a genuine challenge and giving you a chance to test your reactions etc. it feels like it just picks you off at random sometimes :/ i still like the game though, just for its querkyness, theres definately worse games on the sms

  • this f'ing game looks like space harruer for the master system

  • How do i disable the damn 3D glasses?

  • I think you press pause on the title screen.

  • this music was so dope!! Timeless!! Inspiring!! ;)

  • I got this for x-mas. Even as a kid I thought the animation was horribly choppy. The 3-D effect made it a lot better though.

  • Wish Space Harrier 3D was given a "Space Harrier arcade" makeover (no polygons just give it smooth fps and Space Harrier arcade quality visuals).

There's some really imaginative ideas in this game, its much better than Space Harrier 2 IMHO, which on the whole felt bland.

  • It did feel bland, on the hole.

  • That was a joke btw

  • Dr. Evil: I'm sorry, do you want some icecream?

I'm guessing you're quoting scott evil?

  • TIE Fighters, and Gundams! :-)

  • nice music, sounds like a sonic game i played

  • because he played it on Kega, which is just like if he played on a Genesis with a power base converter, which allowed it to upgrade the sound

  • Honestly, it's a pretty bad upgrade. I liked the music before the upgrade. It has something to do with implementing the FM sound or something I think....

  • @xDaXAFImoshmonkey The Genesis actually doesn't provide that upgrade. The FM Upgrade was an add-on for the Mark III and was built in to the Japanese Master System. The US never got the upgrade unfortunately. Some games make really good use of it though like Phantasy Star , R-Type and After Burner.

  • maybe George Lucas would sue sega, the enemies in the first part of the game, they look a lot like Ti-fighters from star Wars.

  • I remember playing this game on a pair of jacked 3-d Glasses. It took a lot of practice to beat it. I always got stuck on stage 2.

  • me 2

  • I take it this is being played on a Japanese SMS as it has the FM sound chip in it.

  • Does this game use the 3d glasses

  • yeah, that's why the frame rate is so low. It has to do every frame twice. Shame, since it could have been cool if it wasn;t 7 frames a second.

  • This version sounds more closer to the arcade than the original non-3-D version. So definitely a big improvement here for the Master System.

  • a, this isn't the master system version....at least not the one that was released in america....that's not how it sounds at all....is the music a remake hack or sthg?!?!?!

  • This is the Master System version of this game, but the music have FM sound.

  • well...it souns like ass....not like the MS at all....

  • Was Space Harrier ever ported to the Sega Genesis?

  • Yeah it was, it was called Space Harrier 2. Check my other vid on it.

  • @Glacier2030 That's not a port. There was a port of the original Space Harrier to the 32x, though, which is a very good port of the arcade version.

  • @Glacier2030 Wow, you know--I never noticed Space Harrer II was actually a conversion of Space Harrier 3D. Granted I didn't play SH3D much. I remember I borrowed it from a friend but the glasses didn't work.

  • I wish someone would remake this game 16-bit style in the vain of the arcade original, like they did with the recent Fantasy Zone II remake. So much potential, so little technology.

  • Dude before I die I have to play this game with 3d goggles and take shrooms while listening to 70's prog rock records I am sure it would be the coolest trip possible.

  • agreed

Its like 70's keyboardish progressive rock

I hope one guy will remix MOURA and BITS music stage with power and keyboard virtuosity! :D

  • fuck man

    i

    beat

    you

    to

    it

    last night

    holy fuuuuuuuck. it was amazing.

side note: i didnt know you could get really really fucked up after smoking regs

  • It was a tough game but it was also full of imagination. I loved the enemies which formed a wall on Stage 5, and the the Tron-like Stage 3. Cool Damonia is a ball-breakingly hard boss.

The game has a darker feel than Space Harrier, which is appropriate considering its toughness.

When I played it on the Megadrive's Master System converter I found the Megadrive pads improved my play considerably.

  • I never knew you could take 3D off! I always had to play with it on and I never had the glasses! Good show.

  • I love the stage 2 music, Moura :D

  • I gotta mention something about the 7437481 sound test trick.

Once I put that code, after setting it to easy and to 2d, I started a game but it was really bizarre as the enemies on level 1 did not shoot their usual missiles! The first boss was also totally different!

I passed the first level, level 2 was starting and IT SKIPPED COMPLETELY to level 4 where everything was normal again!

It really freaked me out! I tried again but it never happened.

This was my Space Harrier 3D story.

  • I had the privilege of playing it to the death in the late 80s, it was by far the HARDEST game I've ever played on the great SMS.

It was extremely hard and demanded total concentration, I'm not kidding!

I only finished it twice w/o 3d glasses. There wasn't any 3d f/x with it, nothing came out of the screen.

Of course, I abused of the 7437481 sound test trick haha! I played on easy which gave you 4 lives, I think.

Fast forward to 2003 where I played on emu, piece of cake w/ kwik save!

  • How do you get the 3d mode off

  • its when when you put your name during the high score. Google it. Google is your best friend when it comes to research. Google it.

  • I Love that FM Sound Chip!

  • I remember playing this one! Pity I haven't completed it yet. BTW, can you list the names of all the stages and all the enemies from Space Harrier 3D (Master System)? Danke!

  • This was my first game on the Sega Maste System, I got it for Christmas as a kid. My brother broke the 3-D glasses and I was never able to see how the game looked in 3-D.

  • oh dood you missed out, it was like you see into the screen instead of it popping out at you.

  • Ok I'll do it...but it won't be easy. I've been able to get to Level 10 without too much of a hassle.

  • Sure, why not? After all, the music kicks ass (especially the Stage 3 (Bits) theme).

  • I'm thinking of posting all the levels in this game...I've gotten really far on this game without cheating. Does anyone wanna see the other levels?

  • yeah absolutly...I think I got to level 12 as a kids, my cousin got to 17 or 18..

Hey I'm wondering if they have a pc version of it..

  • The farthest I recall getting to was stage 15. Granted that was over 20 years ago. I thought this game was impossible to beat. If you can beat this game PLEASE POST IT.

  • One question, was Space Harrier 3D kind of a sequal to Master System Space Harrier?

PS. I'd like to see the graphics on that one updated for next gen.

  • I honestly can't answer that question. When I was a kid and got the Sega with the 3D glasses, this was the first game I got. It was much later that I got the original Space Harrier. A few years later when the Sega Genesis came out, one of the first games the made was Space Harrier II. So logically, I don't know what the REAL order is.

  • Hmmm....I just dusted off the old game after not touching it for 20 years and read the instructions. The furthest I got was stage 13. I didn't make it to fight any of the bosses. I'm about to embark on the greatest comeback of Space Harrier 3D of all time! After a 20 year hiatus and coming up short...I will conquer this game! Do nothing till you hear from me as it may take me some years to accomplish. Peace!

  • ya, level 15 on a luck streak was as far as i got...ONCE.

Someone needs to make a walkthrough vid to the end for the Mastersystem version.

  • This game really takes me back. It was one of the first games I ever played as a 5 or 6 year old. I was fortunate to own the 3D glasses at the time (my dad bought me the package with it, the light gun, and Missle Defense 3D). Those 3D effects were amazing (and still is)!

  • sounds like win95 midi

  • It is the FM sound chip from the Japanese Sega Mark III Master System.

  • Oh so thats how it sounded?

Why did they change music from the original SMS release to this?

  • It's not really changed, it's just if you had the FM chip you got this sound, if didn't have it you got the sound you know from the SMS version. The FM chip came out in Japan after the SMS was released here, so we never got it.

  • ah.

do emulators such as gens+, fusion, and chasms emulate the fm in SMS?

  • I don't know about Gens+ but I do know Dega and Meka and some other Sega Master System Emulators emulate it.

  • level 2 yo!!!!!

  • Level two music is awsome. I remember playing this game but I had no 3-D glasses but I still made it pretty far. I was near the end hehe so yeah someone post the other levels.

  • Comment removed

  • Someone post the levels 6 and on.....

  • Never did win this damn game!!!!

  • One of the most difficult game ever.

    definitely.

From level 7 on (I have the PAL version) it's impossible to beat it up unless you use a smart trick.

Always pausing and resuming the game, so you have more time to avoid flying bullets

  • Still slightly easier than the original SMS Space Harrier.

  • OH MY GOD!!! I've figured it out! The levels can only be a problem if you focus on the enemies AND the objects as you progress. This leads to second guessing and trying to balance your actions, but always keep moving! You'll be too busy to notice the appearance rate and positioning of objects coming toward you because of choppy gameplay. Killing enemies doesn't have to be the object of some levels you have trouble with.

  • Oops, i meant level 6. Level 8 is where I start having trouble getting through. Level 9 will always be my favorite level in this game.

  • This should've used an overhaul like what Sega did to the original SH: Same Gameplay with new graphics and sound.

  • I know what you mean. The tone and pitch of the BGM were much richer and melodic compared to this one. The repeat version of level 2 is level 8.

  • This must be the MARK 3 version, it had a better sound chip. The BGM from level 2 is my favorite on the American version.
