People thought, invented their whole lives, while in aztec lands you only had to go out of your home and walk 200 meters to find an animal to eat or a tree to gather fruits. This is dramatically the best episode of the series of Heroes and Villains. Beyond technicallities like specific historical accuracy it really gets you into the skins of Cortes and Moctezuma as well as into the reality of spaniards and mesoamericans at the time. The spanish had a advantage of defeating the AZTECS. The aztecs defeating themselves due to religions belifs that the old rule named Quetzacolt would return and retake his throne, the leader Moctezuma belief in this myth, and when Cortez showed up he confused him with Quetzacolt because they both look the same. So Moctezuma failed and his people got masscre because he basically gave up.

True the Spanish may have massacred many Aztecs, but the Aztecs massacred other people every day sacrificing them on the "great temple." The Spanish did make some morally wrong decisions, but in the end, they were the good guys.

Why can't people accept that the Aztecs were backward and behind the times even for the 1500s. Basically you had two oppressive empires facing off and the one with the better technology and plan won. Don't forget in our part of world, we learnt a lot from each other. e.g. gun powder that gave Spanish decisive advantage was invented in China along with many advancements in chemistry and engineering. Advances in Maths, medicines and metallurgy were lead by Indians. Persians and Byzantine gave contribution in their way. We learnt from each other while Meso-Americans didn't have this advantage.

Beyond technicallities like specific historical accuracy it really gets you into the skins of Cortes and Moctezuma as well as into the reality of spaniards and mesoamericans at the time. Second, I don't remember that last time Christians, Africans, or even Asians of that time taking people in chains to the top of pyramids and skinning them alive and ripping their hearts out. Though it is widely admitted that Aztecs practiced human sacrifice regularly, no proofs are known yet for skinning alive or cannibalism. These myths are based mainly on the accounts of Spaniards. What would you call crucification practiced regularly by Romans or slaves made to kill each other for entertainment?

Why can't people accept that the Aztecs were backward and behind the times even for the 1500s. Basically you had two oppressive empires facing off and the one with the better technology and plan won. That is history and that is the way it has always been, and the way it will always be. You just hope the better side wins, as in the this case. The Spanish by modern day standards are oppressive and bad, but by the standards of the day they were the norm.

Don't forget in our part of world, we learnt a lot from each other. e.g. gun powder that gave Spanish decisive advantage was invented in China along with many advancements in chemistry and engineering. Advances in Maths, medicines and metallurgy were lead by Indians. Persians and Byzantine gave contribution in their way. We learnt from each other while Meso-Americans didn't have this advantage.

@julegon2 In Mexico, it is common to have roads and places named after Cortes but not a statue. There is bust was placed in a hospital in 1981 but was soon removed from public because there were threats to destroy it. Now it is located in Naples, Italy. Cortez is hated in Mexico.

He was executed four years after the fall of Tenochtitlan, probably on trumped-up charges, but I think he's one of the few people involved in these events who comes out of it looking truly heroic.

@robiking011 España lo que más extrajo de América fué plata y México en 200 años de independencia ha extraído 1000.000 veces más plata de su país que la que se extrajo durante el virreinato.De hecho es el 2º productor mundial de plata, el 1º es Perú.Pero a muchos latinoamericanos les lavan el cerebro para que piensen que sus paises son pobres por el "oro" que los españoles les robaron.

@robiking011 Cuando la realidad es bien distinta y no solo son los principales productores del mundo si no que además sus paises son infinitamente más ricos en recursos naturales que España.Tampoco hay que olvidar que los españoles fundaron en México,ciudades,catedrales,hospitales,monasterios,universidades etc..que hoy por hoy son declarados patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco y reciben miles de visitas.

@robiking011 El país más pobre de América es Haití, (ex-colonia francesa) y el l 2º país más pobre de América es Guayana Británica ( ex-colonia Británica) y si echamos un vistazo a EE.UU,Australia,etc veremos que son paises formados mayoritariamente por emigrantes blancos ( al contrario que en Latinoamérica)y que no se caracterizan precisamente por el buen nivel de vida de los nativos o aborigenes.

@robiking011 En el caso de EE.UU los pocos nativos que quedan viven en reservas, la mitad de ellos bajo el umbral de la pobreza en el pais más rico del mundo.Y si nos remontamos al México prehispánico veremos que los únicos que vivían bien eran los aztecas,que fueron el grupo que se impuso a la mayoría de pueblos indígenas a los que subyugaron y oprimieron imponiendoles fuertes tributos gracias a los cuales los aztecas podían mantener su gran nivel de vida ,

@robiking011 Vivir bajo el umbral de la pobreza es lo mismo aquí ,en la India,en Brasil o en el Congo.Muchas reservas de EE.UU ni siquiera tienen agua potable, los nativos tienen las tasas más altas de suicidios,alcoholismo,drogadicción,desempleo,desnutrición,etc.de todo el país. y la esperanza de vida más corta.Cerca del 50% padecen diabetes debido a su genética y como la sanidad no es gratuita y no pueden pagar un tratamiento la mitad de ellos tienen algun miembro de su cuerpo amputado.

This presentation is so far of the mark. Whose idea was it to turn it into a Macbeth story where La Maliche plays Lady Macbeth. She was just an interpreter. Although it's full of errors. Part 2 said she was an Aztec slave, when she was actually an Aztec princess sold into slavery (to the Maya) after her father dies and her mother remarried.

@Krifko I am glad you mention slavery. It is quite and interesting subject. I can not tell you about Ottomans, but as far as the Americans and Africa, slavery existed there, but it didn't compare to the slavery that Europeans inflicted. A very good case illutrates this situtation, the Kongo Kingdom in Africa. Slavery was practiced by African civilizations and Africans were at firts willing to trade with the Portuguese. @Krifko example, slaves were not simply considered as property that could be mistreated or replaced when a slave died. Families were not separated and slaves were given a humane treatment. It was the European slave trade that brought an end to the Kongo Kingdom. Some historians dare say that in no part of the world was slavery as cruel as in Brazil, which ofcourse the Portuguese were responsible for. Slavery there didn't las as long as you said, but how should we measure the evil of slavery

@Krifko and Europeans are demons eventhough some Europeans themselves said so of their fellow contrymen. There is a document called Cronica de Michoacan written by Spanish friars where they litteraly called and portrayed Spaniards as "demons" because of the pains they inflicted on the Navites. Also Bartolome de las Casas, a former slave owner who later became a priest wrote: "What we did in the Indies stands of the worst sin ever commited angainst God and mankind."
