And now I've also successfully started both Starblade and Solvalou with Mjolnir and mamev0.100. Amazing to see once again, and on my PC!? Haha.. super! Ofcourse I will have to attach an analog joystick of some sort. I think I have an USB flightstick here somewhere. The mouse doesn't seem to work on mame0.100, at least not my USB-mouse.
Flat shaded polygons are so beautiful when presented by namco.
@uncletom1971 I can never get Mame to run SB without echoing sound. Other than that...game runs at 75% speed. Any ideas? I have played with settings....doesnt seem to work.
@uncletom1971 Just a P4 3.0 with a FX5500 card....1 Gig ram. I hardly think its the processor / gfx card ....such a simple poly type game. Will try it on e beefy machine and get back to you......cheers though!
I usually get low framerates in any System21 game with mame32 v0.128, but with this Mjolnir it flows without any problems. Could it be your DX drivers, or maybe something running in the background? Or anything else configurable in your BIOS perhaps?
Are other things going slower or having speed issues on this PC? You can check it in task manager.
Thank you for your information. I will try it myself. It was a while I last played the game.
Actually, funny how more and more videos of Starblade popped up just recently. You should have a look at DarthNunos 'prototype Starblade' clip here on youtube, filmed in 1990. Game was then called Galaxian3, imagine that.
I see. I am also curious about what controls you used. I notice that you have a quite stable aim, which is almost impossible with the keyboard. Did you play it with the mouse, or some analog control?
I wonder if Starblade was inspired by the 1983 film 'Tha Last Starfighter'... It resembles Starfighter in many ways, even the font in the game logotype. It is a pitty that the game concept wasn't taken any further. Not that Starblade is in any way insufficeint, but at the time that particular hardware running flat-shaded polygons at 60fps was exactly what made this game so attractive, along with Cyber Sled and ofcourse do not forget about Solvalou, which probably was the 'warm up' to Starblade.
Was this recoreded from Tekken on Playstation? Or is this the original 'ploygonizer' system?
This game still is one of my favourites. To play this game through to the end is like sunshine on a rainy day.
The thing with Starblade is that although you may think it runs in a linear fashion, it still presents variable scenarios depending on either how well you play, or even at random. So play it several time, noticing what routes it'll take you, and you will see that it's *not* same every round.
No, this game ran on Namco's System 21 hardware, while Virtua Cop ran on Sega's Model 2. Time Crisis was on the same hardware as Ridge Racer, System 22. If you meant that they are both rail shooters, then yes. Except in Time Crisis and Virtua Cop, your path started and stopped depending on how many enemies were left in a scene. Starblade just continues on no matter what. OK, time to flip the retrogamer nerd switch back to the 'OFF' position.
This looks like it might have used the same hardware as Virtua Cop, Time Crisis etc. where you control the gun while movement follows a predefined path.
Reminds me of the game X and Xscape

Pretty sure it was with the mouse. By the way, quite confident I used the emulator Mjolnir, as MAME showed artifacts if I recall.

This was the original arcade version. I can't remember if I used MAME for this or another emulator. I will have a root through my collection.
