Love your enthusiasm for Dreamfall. A great review. Hopefully work on Chapters will start this year after The Secret World is released, and we might see it in 2013? Christ almighty. 2006-2013 is another 7 year break between sequels. I suppose the games are living up to their name.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is my most favorite game of all time, and The Longest Journey is second on the list. Maybe, it's because I played the sequel first, maybe it's because I always thought about video games as of "upgraded" books, but I always liked sequel more. So, I fully agree with you.
And about gameplay too. However, I always thought that Dreamfall was more of the experiment how to continue than the actual game. So, I hope they know this now and the new game will be even better.
1. I've never heard of this game, thanks for the review :)
2. I know plenty of foreign companies that have good english translations
3. I saw this vid from the bulletin. Didn't you also say that you were working on a comparison between Sly Cooper and Assassin's Creed? Personally I like Assassin's Creed more
do you want to know something funny, when i read a old swedish issue 17 of donald duck 2006 did i find a article of dreamfall, they didnt show much besides some screenshots and said its was a sequel to the longest journey and didnt say even wich system it was realesing on, i wasnt intrested first time i read it, and i just saying this because it was something intresting
can't wait for your top 10 games of all time gexup :D but i'd of thought you'd of done a top 20 games of all time seeing as how you did it for your top 20 favorite 3d platformers :)
@heresjordan4ya Well my list of favorite games beyond Top 10 keeps changing, but these Top 10, are games that never lost its appeal to me. Plus, I'll take about over 10 minutes per game discussing why each of them are in my Top 10 rather than just putting them in the list and move on which is the problem with many people who puts a Top 10 Favorite Games. But to be fair, I'll also put 2 more other lists in December similar to my Top 10 VG; my Top 10 Favorite Movies & Albums. Sound good? =D
Oh well, even if you're never gonna review bad games, I still like it when you reference them in your vids.
21:48 I will forever think the same about Final Fantasy IV, a game that though it's somewhat credited for its story, a reviewer would lose its credibility if it acknowledged it as "the most original story." I however, happened to like and use the moral for real life and thus nothing will convince me otherwise.
I would not let that get in the way of a review, though I hope you also don't.
Hey, I'd like to request a review. I don't know how much you are into jrpg games, but check out Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits for the PS2. It is completely underrated, and if you get a chance to play it you will be really surprised at how much of a masterpiece this game is. It has an amazing storyline and the way it is done it so original and innovative. I think that it would be an 8 fingers as far as storyline goes.
@ProkoLokor Already have. I'm not impressed with the whole game as I've seen something similar to Stephen King's novels & a TV show called Twin Peaks; it was much done better (story-wise). Plus, Alan Wake didn't give us the real ending, you had to buy it off of DLC which I find incredibly bullshit. Just read any of Stephen King's books or watch Twin Peaks because Alan Wake did the same thing
One more thing, I take my "7 Fingers" rating quite seriously because it means that it's significant to me
@gexup You know why you saw something similar before? Because this game is a tribute to those movies and books. There are so many references to Twin Peaks, King and even The Shining and Hitchcock's "The Birds".
Also - don't tell me that this game have a real ending and you haven't heard about "Dreamfall Chapters" that was supposed to be an episodic continuation of this game.... just like Alan Wake DLC!
Ps.: There was a code for free DLC in new copy of AW.
Well, here's what Dreamfall did that AW didn't do for me; Show me something unpredictable
Anyone can say that it had a bad ending, but I thought it was sheer genious to FINALLY...
-SPOILER ALERT-
...put the bad guys to win! Using the Dreamer device as a new threat to the balance was just something I've never seen before nor expected. The story did risks by putting all kinds of emotions; scares, laughter, curious, anger, sadness, & more. Even if it's an actual "ending" I just love the execution
Even though I love the unexpected "bad guy wins" ending, here's my problem with AW for only having the ending only available for Xbox Live Market Place; They had the ending this whole time & they never bothered to put it in the disk. As much as you would like to put Dreamfall for not putting a "real ending" at least Remedy Entertainment had it all along when it was released & Dreamfall Chapters is still at work. Also, after experiencing Stephen King's books I already know how AW ends
@gexup DLC aren't really an ending, they are more of a recap with new gameplay elements. It's somewhere in between stories because there aren't any manuscript pages left.
For me (for ME!) Alan Wake is better than Dreamfall but only a little. Mostly because it's not big enough. It's like adding a bonus chapter to giant book that throws so much new stuff and almost nothing is explained.
Also - gameplay is a complete joke - mostly you just run from point A to B. And from B to A.
Awesome review.. My g/f has played through these 100% completion.. I like the comparisons you draw to Shenmue and others as this is as rewarding of a game as those you mentioned.
Great review man. Only one thing I gotta point out:
I think most of the voice-cast is American. Just because the development company is Norwegian, that doesn't mean they can't hire voice-actors from overseas, in fact for European game developers I think that's rather the normal way the approach games that get released in the English speaking world. Plus, there's plenty of voice-talent that comes from Britain, so FunCom wouldn't have needed to look far.
@HandeToon Well, even though the voice-acting was done by Americans, but wasn't the script made in Norway? Usually other companies like SquareEnix (That has American companies there) still provide horrible dubs. Just look at Final Fantasy X & Mindjack. They were just unbearable.
But I did see your new Top 10 list and I strongly have to recommend Dreamfall to you buddy =)
@gexup There's also the case of whether or not the actors are in fact actors by profession or in-name-only. Lots of times, especially when the acting is done in-house (meaning there's a few dudes around the studio who just get assigned to do voices) there isn't nearly as much effort in the voice acting. Also an equal amount of it comes down to who does the voice directing. Plus with Ragnar Tørnquist's script the actors had pretty good material to work with. =)
I did enjoy Dreamfall at MOST of the time. In spring 2006 a lot of PC Gaming Magazines hyped this game to no end, and for me, it lived up to it's hype. Not many games do. There are some aspects to it that I don't like. First it's retail PC installer is crap. And it's ending with it's plot holes (for e.g. the tower) left a bitter taste. It was abrupt and felt that the game just ended half way. But non the less Crow is and for ever be awesome!
Wow. that ending was warming. I will probably look up a walkthrough of the sequel soon enough. Can't wait to see your Top 10 Video Games of all time in December.
Loved the story, they need another damn sequel. The part in Russia where you find out about that girl was just amazingly done, and it really makes you think.

4.I remember dreamfall from an xplay review. I remember a joke they made saying that for the combat system you'll use a few fingers and some toes.
5.Isn't Heavy Rain an adventure game? Why not review that game?
