I HAVE A THEORY! Dunno if its true or not. But if u look on his back during certain cut scenes there is a metal circle on his back where the sword 'sticks' randomly. After much thought and examination i propose that it is a form of magnet that holds the sword in place. Possibly an electro magnet so that its strength is more controlled and the sword too could be magnetized.
There's supposedly a magnet on the back of every SOLDIER uniform, like the one Zack has on...to keep their sword like that. I didn't make that up, that's supposedly "Final Fantasy 7 lore".
I like Zack's positive thinking.
