This is my favorite New Order song as well, but I think there's a version way simpler than this AND prior to the Low-Life version that is heavy on the synthesizer, light on effects, and I just cannot find it.
God how naff many of their original versions must be. I thought this song & 'Confusion' on the 'Substance1987' CDs WERE the originals they sounded so good. The first versions are tunelessly awful, structure all over the place, with jumbled & painfully weak vocals. This one is polished & dynamic-exactly how a song like this should sound & the female vocal's create another dynamic flavour. The 1994 'Bizarre Love Triangle' is their best version of that too.
I personally prefer the original. This feels hyper-inflated by comparison, and the additions generally pointless and/or distracting. To me, the original feels more sincere. That said, I can see why some might prefer this remix; it'd do much better in a club.
Well...I just heard the original for the first time, this here being the only version I've known since around '88 - to me this ticks along nicely and its got more sonic depth to it, more so than the original, think I'll stick with this one to take me back to my teenage years
It puzzles me too....I also think this is a superb remix, and is nearly my favorite track from new order. I don't feel the original one at all. This version I find has far more emotion than the original, it's spooky. I used to often repeat this track in the 80s from the CD,
@astrolabe1976 I totally agree. This is by far my favorite version of this song. I love the electro/freestyle sound with all the synths and electronic percussion. I'm a big fan of John Robie(and Arthur Baker too, who also worked with New Order). I also think the vocals sound so much better, and I like the soulful background vocals. I also think this is the version used in Pretty In Pink, If I'm not mistaken.

why this John Robie mix is hated by so many New Order fans is beyond me. I think its a great mix of synth pop with some soul tinged backup vocals
