elbow are legends did guy gurvey lose his brother to the booze just a question the lyrics sound like maybe he did if he did sorry pal what a performance at glastonbury i love you elbow x
'I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot' one lovely line, so powerful yet so simple. Song writers would kill for a line like that, and this song is full to the brim with them.
i got chills from this, this music is form the heart and soul , the gut feeling. RAW TALENT. Lets ignore the manufactured bullshit that , according to the top charts , most ppl seem 2 b listening to today.
@funkster505 I'll start one. Justin Bieber could sing this song way better. The original UK Office is far superior than the American one. And there is no God.
I think it's "It's breaking my heart to pull on the reins" (of his friend's behaviour)... it makes more sense to me than the other ways people have heard it. (:
I can understand giving someone titbits of alcohol so they don't have to go cold-turkey, but giving him excess is just not believable.
Sorry, but in my opinion, 'pull at the rein' makes so much sense in the context of the song, and in the context of the line 'it's breaking my heart (to pull at the rein)'
this and grounds for divorce i think are the best songs on the album, but the others are amazing too, the whole album is brilliant. I totaly recomend it!
The songs mean one thing to the writer but can assume any meaning for the audience. Thats the beauty of music, its what you feel. Not how your 'meant' to feel.
The song's about a friend of the band, Brian Glancy. He died while they were working on the album, and stop me if i'm wrong but i interpret the "a friend of mine grows his very own brambles" as the shrubbery growing around him in the soil where he is buried.
Of course the whole album is dedicated to him, but the various songs only have small bits dedicated to Brian himself.
'Friend of Ours' is the one song entirely dedicated to him, whereas the other songs, while still refering to him here and there, aren't completely dedicated to him.
But as said, in a way the whole album is dedicated to him. Every song is in rememberance of him, but 'Friend of Ours' is the song about him and nothing else.
I'm not entirely convinced that this is about an alcoholic friend, as the commenter below says. I think somethings happened to this friend, that has made him start drinking. and the 'dont run with those fuckers' gives the impression that he joined some group of people to do something bad? I dunno. correct me.
I used to only listen to one Elbow song, Seldom seen kid because i loved it so much and i didnt want all the toher songs to suck, which is what the pattern usually is on most albums, but this Album. it so beautifull, so sad, and yet so nice and soothing i love it and them so much and im glad i listend to the rest of the album, thanks to people who put these songs up.I hope there next album is just as memorable.
I personally think it's 'pull at the rein' because it makes more sense, as it's a fairly common phrase used to describe trying to hold someone/something back.
Wow... I'm a pretty new fan of elbow, as a lot of people are, just got the album a few days ago, and it's truly amazing, I'm definitely going to listen to t'others. The music from 3:34 onwards is breathtaking, totally epic. I don't like throwing that word around often, but this really deserves it. I don't know how it's taken them this long to become big!
Some people take the meanings so literally. Are we really assuming it's about a friend who works as a gardener and grows bramble bushes that twist around him? By my reckoning, for 'friend' read 'heart.'
anyone think the opening reminds them of a piece in the theme for "Midnight Express"
First time I heard it I thought it was a sample. But I listened to the actual soundtrack and it sounds nothing like it. Could of sworn I hear dit in the film tho!!!
Thank god one radio station was pushing Elbow here in the Netherlands. (Arrow Classic Rock) But they went bankrupt march 11. Now they don't play Elbow anymore here. :(
Though I can´t quite understand the meaning of the lyrics, I find it an icredbly amazing song! Spectacular band, marvelous voice. This band ran Radioheah and Coldplay down in the Brit Awards but is not as popular as it deserves. I just can´t understand.
I thinks its supposed to, because there so hard to figure out and put right, and all the meanings of the lyrics on this album are about hard problems, for instance this song is about his alcohlic friend. but thats just my take on the album picture, correct me please if im wrong.
Guy Garvey's voice is so beautiful. I have been a big fan of elbow for a few years now and feel in love with this song the very first time I heard it, the cello in the background is so haunting. Absolutely sublime. I recently downloaded the Live in London set from itunes, and the unplugged version of this song is just stunning.
Good grief, this is one of the most divinely written songs my ears ever had the privelege of hearing. That goddamn cello sends electric shocks down my back every freakin time. Pow.

It makes more sense in my opinion, as it's a fairly common phrase used to describe trying to hold someone/something back.
rsmith606 2 years ago
Surely it's "pour like the rain".
The song is clearly about an alcoholic, and so it'd mean serve him alcohol in excess.
rherrick123 2 years ago
why on earth would he do that to his friend?
I can understand giving someone titbits of alcohol so they don't have to go cold-turkey, but giving him excess is just not believable.
Sorry, but in my opinion, 'pull at the rein' makes so much sense in the context of the song, and in the context of the line 'it's breaking my heart (to pull at the rein)'
rsmith606 2 years ago
Well perhaps you don't have to take it so literally. Besides which, maybe his love for his friend takes over and makes him give him the alcohol.
I have checked the sleevenotes also.
