  • Love this song!

Pease take the time to listen to my cover of it!!

    Much appreciated.

    DJ

  • Love this song, Guy has such a beautiful, powerful voice.

  • 'I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot' one lovely line, so powerful yet so simple. Song writers would kill for a line like that, and this song is full to the brim with them.

  • this reminds me of a friend who's also a drug addict. we've tried to help him all we could but he won't stop.

  • Love Elbow, they are amazing.

  • love this track

  • First comment in 8 months!... I like it too.

  • i got chills from this, this music is form the heart and soul , the gut feeling. RAW TALENT. Lets ignore the manufactured bullshit that , according to the top charts , most ppl seem 2 b listening to today.

  • one word LEGENDS

  • Incredible production. Sounds fantastic.

  • Dude this is fuckin brilliant :0

  • Wow.

  • I seriously teared up when I first heard this.

This is probably now my favorite Elbow song.

  • anybody ever heard of peter broderick? .... or Grizzly Bear? ... elbow sounds like them two put together lol

  • This is the track I return to time after time. Haunting.

  • @hedgeanie same

  • ELBOM ARE AWESOME

  • Best song on the album!

  • shivers is the only word

  • addicting, thought wrenching, body-mind-and soul relatable song.

this song is a masterpiece, and a drug.

  • lol looking at youtube vids with elbow music on you don't see any arguments unlike basically every other video on youtube.

  • I DISAGREE

  • @ricriddick

    no one cares

this song is too incredible for people to involve themselves in petty arguments

  • @iownagreyhound Haha, I was joking...

  • @ricriddick thats my bad :p

sarcasm is hard to pick up on this. 90% of what i say gets misinterpreted lol

  • @iownagreyhound No worries ha

  • @ricriddick

    i agree

  • @funkster505 cuz when you get incredible music like this theres nothing else to do but love every moment of it

  • @funkster505 Oh ya? Well FUCK! YOU!

  • @djaked *Standard racist, homophobic, political comment that somehow gets into a youtube video despite having nothing to do with the topic*

  • @rufflesc *Agressive response, poorly-spelled accusations of homosexuality*

  • @Acrimonius1408 *Self-righteous justification of previous comment*

  • @djaked my faith in youtube is restored lol

  • @funkster505 I'll start one. Justin Bieber could sing this song way better. The original UK Office is far superior than the American one. And there is no God.

    There. Started the ball rolling.

  • @ContainsLanguage You missed out one: GUY ARVEY IS A TOTAL MONKEY-FUCKING TWAT. Not my opinion, but lets see how many dislikes it gets

  • @molloose what a bell end you are mate id call you mate but you know less than nothing you fuckin boring prick x

  • @100jonnywoods Emitting hate, emitting hate... lol ;)

  • @funkster505 It takes a better class of person to appreciate this music, I guess.

  • INTOXICATING

  • I think it's "It's breaking my heart to pull on the reins" (of his friend's behaviour)... it makes more sense to me than the other ways people have heard it. (:

    Gorgeous song!

  • mmmmhm

  • "Pull out the race"? HAHAHAHA

  • prefered there last album just got this last weedend for a bargain price

  • amazing song, some riot. Is a methodical masterpiece.

  • *pour out the rain

As in, need to fix all your problems

  • I personally think it's 'pull at the rein'.

It makes more sense in my opinion, as it's a fairly common phrase used to describe trying to hold someone/something back.

  • Surely it's "pour like the rain".

The song is clearly about an alcoholic, and so it'd mean serve him alcohol in excess.

  • why on earth would he do that to his friend?

I can understand giving someone titbits of alcohol so they don't have to go cold-turkey, but giving him excess is just not believable.

Sorry, but in my opinion, 'pull at the rein' makes so much sense in the context of the song, and in the context of the line 'it's breaking my heart (to pull at the rein)'

  • Well perhaps you don't have to take it so literally. Besides which, maybe his love for his friend takes over and makes him give him the alcohol.

I have checked the sleevenotes also.

  • Ahh, you win my friend, I checked the lyrics which came with the CD, and you are right.

  • Brother of mine dont roll with those fuckers.

  • run, not roll (:

  • the piano riff (at the start and middle of song) is so beautiful.

  • this and grounds for divorce i think are the best songs on the album, but the others are amazing too, the whole album is brilliant. I totaly recomend it!

  • So soothing and melancholy.. I've listened to this about a dozen times and can't get enough.

  • i agree with you there, its a truely brilliant song. Has made me cry a couple of times tho, lol

  • i love 3:32 <3

  • Thank you Guy, Mark, Craig, Richard, Pete

  • The songs mean one thing to the writer but can assume any meaning for the audience. Thats the beauty of music, its what you feel. Not how your 'meant' to feel.

Elbow are awsome, been a fan from the start.

  • If you haven't already, read Oscar Wilde's preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray. You'd probably agree with most of what he says there.

  • not being funny but it says your 22. these guys have been a band for 18 years. were you realy a 4 year old elbow fan?

  • this uses the wall of sound, right?

  • this is fuckin haunting. elbow = sex on strings. peace

  • I would love to make a video for this song, the imagery it congures is surreal

  • The song's about a friend of the band, Brian Glancy. He died while they were working on the album, and stop me if i'm wrong but i interpret the "a friend of mine grows his very own brambles" as the shrubbery growing around him in the soil where he is buried.

  • This is not the song about Brian. The song about Brian is "Friend of Ours".

  • I thought this song was also about Brian, but in a different way.

  • Well, doesn't Grounds for Divorce also refer to Brian, and the album title "seldom seen kid"?

  • @John234pwns

Of course the whole album is dedicated to him, but the various songs only have small bits dedicated to Brian himself.

'Friend of Ours' is the one song entirely dedicated to him, whereas the other songs, while still refering to him here and there, aren't completely dedicated to him.

But as said, in a way the whole album is dedicated to him. Every song is in rememberance of him, but 'Friend of Ours' is the song about him and nothing else.

  • Ah, totally makes sense.

  • I'm not entirely convinced that this is about an alcoholic friend, as the commenter below says. I think somethings happened to this friend, that has made him start drinking. and the 'dont run with those fuckers' gives the impression that he joined some group of people to do something bad? I dunno. correct me.

  • I used to only listen to one Elbow song, Seldom seen kid because i loved it so much and i didnt want all the toher songs to suck, which is what the pattern usually is on most albums, but this Album. it so beautifull, so sad, and yet so nice and soothing i love it and them so much and im glad i listend to the rest of the album, thanks to people who put these songs up.I hope there next album is just as memorable.

  • It's at 3:30 that I have to turn this up so loud, it's beautiful

  • ha-ha. How about over-fucking orchestrated dirge.

  • Can only disagree with you there

  • it's breaking my heart to pull like the rain.

    amazing.

  • pull at the rein*

as in, he's having to tell his friend to stop.

  • I think it's 'pour like the rain'...

  • Amazing song.

    Thanks for uploading!

  • there at bestival this year ^^ yay

  • Wow... I'm a pretty new fan of elbow, as a lot of people are, just got the album a few days ago, and it's truly amazing, I'm definitely going to listen to t'others. The music from 3:34 onwards is breathtaking, totally epic. I don't like throwing that word around often, but this really deserves it. I don't know how it's taken them this long to become big!

  • Try Leaders of the Free World. It's a tough call, but I think it's an even better album.

  • I agree completely on that piece of music, it gives me the shivers every single time, it is phenomenal.

  • Some people take the meanings so literally. Are we really assuming it's about a friend who works as a gardener and grows bramble bushes that twist around him? By my reckoning, for 'friend' read 'heart.'

It's a great song, brilliantly written.

  • by my reckoning, for 'friend' read, Bryan Glancy, one of their fellow musicians and good friend who died in 2006.

Guy's father called him the Seldom Seen Kid :P

  • This song reminds me of Hollyoaks! :)

  • Lol, I'm a huge fan of Elbow, and I can see why people might find that slightly offensive.

But it reminds me of hollyoaks too :)

  • @JeramyTheGirl why is it offensive its the truth

  • I think it's obvious what the lyrics are about - someone causing the own downfall through drink. Very heartfelt this and sad.

  • anyone think the opening reminds them of a piece in the theme for "Midnight Express"

First time I heard it I thought it was a sample. But I listened to the actual soundtrack and it sounds nothing like it. Could of sworn I hear dit in the film tho!!!

  • Thank god one radio station was pushing Elbow here in the Netherlands. (Arrow Classic Rock) But they went bankrupt march 11. Now they don't play Elbow anymore here. :(

    My discovery of the year.

  • Though I can´t quite understand the meaning of the lyrics, I find it an icredbly amazing song! Spectacular band, marvelous voice. This band ran Radioheah and Coldplay down in the Brit Awards but is not as popular as it deserves. I just can´t understand.

  • It's about his friend being an alcoholic, and he doesn't know how to help him :)

    hope that was helpful :)

    xx

  • Yes, it was helpful. I´d never imagine the meaning. Thank you.

  • CLASS! ELBOW ARE CLASS!

  • I think thats a streetlamp

  • this song is really nice actually reminds me of the weather and country side in the north of england love it

  • its so fucking true

  • Very sad song but a good tribute 'I think when he's drinking he's drowning some riot' sob so true

  • yeah - classic lyric.

I love "beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles"

    brilliant

  • the picture reminds me of one of those rubic cubes

  • the wall reminds me of a wall

  • that curved line above "elbow" reminds me of a monkeys tail in the middle of wagging.

  • lool

  • The block reminds me of sugar cubes sectioned off with thin bits of cardboard

  • I thinks its supposed to, because there so hard to figure out and put right, and all the meanings of the lyrics on this album are about hard problems, for instance this song is about his alcohlic friend. but thats just my take on the album picture, correct me please if im wrong.

  • this reminds me of hollyoaks now >:|

  • same here!! reminds me of nail

  • reminds me of john paul mcqueen

  • I heard this hollyoaks and searched for it here!

  • this is just beautiful!

  • the start of the song may just be the most moving peace of music ive ever heard!

  • As soon as I heard the cello I knew I had to search for this song. I'm so glad that I did. Those lyrics. My my my.

  • 3.36 - 4.44 reminds me of the similar time in radioheads videotape tune, only bin listenin to elbow for a week an am very impressed this my favourite

  • Exactly the same here mate.

  • I'm absolutely in love with this band. I discovered them about a week ago, and I MUST buy their album now. They're fantastic.

And so far this is my favorite song of theirs.

  • there's another three albums before it mate, each one as good. geniuses, all of them.

  • Shivers down my spine, EVERY time.

  • Dick chopped completely off.

  • Does that mean you can no longer think?

  • i love it when it reaches the minor chord at00:17

  • Guy Garvey's voice is so beautiful. I have been a big fan of elbow for a few years now and feel in love with this song the very first time I heard it, the cello in the background is so haunting. Absolutely sublime. I recently downloaded the Live in London set from itunes, and the unplugged version of this song is just stunning.

  • Good grief, this is one of the most divinely written songs my ears ever had the privelege of hearing. That goddamn cello sends electric shocks down my back every freakin time. Pow.

  • This song is freaking amazing - my favorite from this album.

  • This is amazing.

  • I love this song so much, so haunting as has been said. And sadly enough, this song reminds me of a lot of people I know. It gets me every time <3

  • its pretty easy to pick up by ear, just listen in diff sections and piece it tgetha,, youtube may have tutorials for piano

  • I realy want to play this on piano, but im not looking forward to doing it all by ear. anyone know any sites that have the score for this?

  • beutiful

  • buy this album. Don't just listen to it on here, buy it.

  • It's breaking my heart

    It's breaking my heart

  • Ah, it's true, everybody should own this album. Thanks, I love this.

  • I love elbow SOOOOOOOO much, best band ever

  • I simply love this track, it's so sad and haunting. I really can't get enough Elbow right now.

I see yer man who likes to beg for the lyrics hasn't found his way in here yet...

  • and he still hasn't xD
