Only Bea could take one of Barbra's signature songs and literally make it her own. 30 something years later at the Tonys, Lea Michele has just performed this. I think Lea is a wonderful singer who will be on stage/screen for years but I just love this Bea-Sass version. Lea was just trying and stretching too hard for the Barbra phrasing IMO and when you do that, your always going to coming (a close) second best. Bea wisely did her own thing with it. RIP Bea - one of the greats in many fields!
Such an amazing share! Thank you so much! Maybe not her best vocals, but above all she is a performer and she did so well. Full of Bea-Sass as DivaBehavior said and cue-stepping aside, so great!
Thank you SO much! I have been dying to see this. Well worth the wait. Bea had such good instincts. Why they temporarily failed her here is a mystery. She had to know she couldn't pull this off (even without the conductor stepping on her line). A rare misstep for a brilliant performer.
Actually, the more I watch this, the more I enjoy how much Bea-Sass she brings to this. At 1:00, you can tell this is not a woman who likes to be messed with.
Seth Rudestky? Anybody? Nobody?

I love Bea Arthur, she is my favorite of the GG. She can definitely carry a tune, but that doesn't make a person a great singer. Sorry Bea! Love ya!

Watch the Seth Rudetsky deconstruction of this! It is so funny and does not disprespect Bea in anyway. It's just quite funny. :)

She'd make a great Ursula.
kevisaurus 1 year ago 37
@kevisaurus you know that role was originally written for her, right?

@kevisaurus
Oh, lol, this is the deconstruction Seth Rudensky was talking about with Bea being interupted by the conductor at the end. lol
columbusmozart 1 year ago 2
@kevisaurus Actually, the role of Ursula was created for Bea Arthur, but she was occupied with the Golden Girls at the time.

So it wasn't her best work. Still, you have to admit that it's damn hilarious :) What a great woman she was.

Nah, it totally works. The producers prolly picked it for her, and she didn't have a choice. And she works it with that Diva-ness.
