  • WOW got to love those big tag K5la's! Great footage!

  • An "Extra" train is one that is not on the timetable.

  • I apologize for my silly question, but what does " Extra " mean that is included in the title of this video ?

  • Seaboard family hoppers (Seaboard, Family Lines, Clinchfield) in that coal train, sign of things to come with the formation of CSX.

  • Ex C&O mainline.

  • X means privete owner like on passenger cars you see the reportingt marxs followed by and X for privete

  • That is one of the sweetest K5LA's I've ever heard!

  • Well everyone i talk to that are raifans say it stands for express.

  • It doesn't mean express.

  • Did Chessie System merge into what is now CSX or they seperate entities? I know CSX is Chessie Seaboard Express so i figured the 2 might be connected.

  • C=Chessie, S=Seaboard, X=multiplication symbol for "much more."

  • C and S are definitely for Chessie and Seaboard, but the X is debatable. Rumour is it's for "Expanded", or for the stock market symbol. Who knows?

  • Sorry Espeelover, I hit "Remove" rather than " Reply" Klutz!

You asked "Whats all that smoke from?" I believe it's from brake shoes being applied on the downgrade.

  • @640Radio This is great footage! How did you get to Jerry's Run? The down hill run to Clifton Forge with the brake shoe dust is great! Thanks, I like this video!

  • @Trainmaster02 Wow, that was so long ago, I don't really remember. It was probably a county road or railroad access road. I'm sure it's on a county roadmap.

    Thanks for the positive feedback.

  • @Trainmaster02 "Upon further review", and looking at some satellite images, I think it might be Moss Run rather than Jerry's Run. It was a long time ago, and I don't have a clear memory. Maybe someone familiar with the geography will post something.

  • @640Radio , to every one above the footage your talking about being at Jerry's Run or Moss run is not right , it's at OX Cabin, My Dad was the Enger.and i was the head brakeman on that train, was was to be out last run togeather after that trip and the road your talking about was a access road for the railroad and there was some hunting camps on the north side of no#1 main line.

  • Thanks for the clarification, however I don't know of any way to correct the video and replace the old one on YouTube. I just hope people will read the comments and see your post.

  • I would just like to let you know that enger. on the east bound train was my DAD and My self, it was to be our last trip togeather from there on, im so glad i founds this, becouse i never took any movies of me and my dad on any of our trips togeather once agan ty you so very very much, see i lost my dad back in 1986 of june 5th, it was very very good to see my dad and to hear his voice again, ,GOD BLESS , Nathan Dilley (ret. conductor)Alleghany Sub. Div.

  • dude wats it like to drive an emd like that i consider you a legend i envy you

  • how did your dad die if you don't mind me asking, and how long was he with C&O and then Chessie system?

  • @coedgal HI. This was an awesome video. My Dad, Bill DeLong, was a Conductor on the C&O (Piedmont & Mountain Sub's1968-2000). I was very familiar with Clifton Forge. We lost Dad 10 years ago and to this day I cannot see a train without thinking of him. from the 1980's until he passed, he worked 50 & 51 from DC to Clifton Forge. Sorry ot bother you, but I know exactly how you feel, these videos can be very comforting.

  • @coedgal Hello, I know exactly what you mean here. My Dad, Bill DeLong, was a Conductor out of Charlottesville, VA on the Piedmont & Mountain Sub's. I spent a lot of time with him in Clifton Forge also when he was working 50 & 51 on Amtrak. Dad passed back in 2000, so I understand your sentiments here. Take care.

  • @JDD70100 , Hey i knew your Dad real well, I knew all the guys who work the Mountain Sub. Div, i stayed at the " Y " as my lay over point !! Nathan

  • does the CSX still run over this section of C&O Mainline via Allagannies? what kind of horn was on the Chessie C&O SD50?

  • Yes, to your first question. I don't know to your second.

    Ross

  • That would have been a K5LA, a good one at that.

  • K5LA.

  • Chessie System K5LA.

  • Excellent video. This brings back a lot of memories for me. It is great to see that era again without any CSX, but you do see some signs of things to come with the Seaboard and CRR hoppers.

    Great job.

  • Excellent video. Always glad to see some remembrances of the end of the Chessie era

  • My lord yes! If you've got any more videos from then, please feel free to post them. Gosh what a missed era.. Wish I was there to experience it! Great videos.. Love the sounds!

  • I don't think I have any more. Mostly I was taking slides in those days. I didn't have a video recorder...just a camera and had to borrow a record deck which was the size of a major city phone book. If I turn up more Chessie, I'll post it.

  • That's cool man, thank you for sharing what you did video, and record. The audio is most excellent to match the video, thanks for making the extra effort!
