I like the classic Hejira song, but not crazy with the Parker guitar sound. I miss the smooth, clear sound of the George Benson guitar. It could be just the sound engineer?
What can you say about this song? It's a brilliant song by a brilliant artist--one of the most powerful and imagistic of her incredible body of work. It's music, poetry, and painting all wrapped into one.
I have always loved her. She is a genius and an inspiration. I hope she is walking in those green pastures on her birthday today! God bless you, Joni!
My favorite Joni Mitchell song. So many brilliant images in the lyric, such piercingly beautiful music, nothing compares to it. She is the godlike artist and the trembling human all in the same moment.
@greatwhitepolarbear Shaking off futility, is more what I guess when I hear this lyric! It's sad that people get so hopeless they decide to take their own lives.
I love artists who forget their own lyrics. One thing is the inspirational moment, another is the mechanic repetition that is a paradox of the artists liberty.
I 'tune in' to Joni.Strong & fragile.... human but also near-genius.
I remember watching this on KQED 9 and could turn away. She gave a great performance even though her voice was a bit smokey. That smokey sound added something to the performance. She and crew were great, although I miss her original band mates Jaco, Tom Scott etc.
@DancingEar08 - Joni either is or was a smoker - it sure darkened her voice - but I completely agree with you - it's like adding smoked paprika to your pantry or your cooking - every time you open the door or lift the lid - imagination runs riot (at least in my pantry and on my stovetop) However, I really really hope she enjoys her maternal re-union and the fruits of her art for a long time.
@neurofire Joni is an admitted chain smoker. Her voice has darkened so much that she no longer sings. I curse cigarettes for taking away my favorite singer's beautiful voice. Canada has produced many of my favorite musicians.
@jamielynnfox I didn't know she no longer performs - but there's always autotune. (joke) Singers who smoked: Nat King Cole - Frank Sinatra - Edith Piaf - Billie Holiday - Bob Dylan - Amy Winehouse - Pink - Keith Richards - David Bowie - George Harrison - Tom Waits - Kate Bush --- and then there's the most famous non-singing smoker of all time: Albert Einstein. What was in that pipe of his?
John Denver smoked - weed that is. So too Willie Nelson (duh!) Paul McCartney. Gotta go - out of charact
An incredibly deep, personal song. I give Joni props for her song about the east coast. She's so clearly a west coast person. I had my opportunity to see her play in Boston at an outdoor concert. She got pissed at the audience for not being quiet. After that, she played 6 songs in a row and left. I was devastated. Never the less, I will always love her.
The rhythm and combined beat of this song has always been one of her best, very captivating.........., it so very much naturally flows, notwithstanding the lyrics and the rest.
This is an incredible version of one of Joni's best songs. Thanks for posting!! And for anyone who hasn't seen the DVD, it's definitely worth the $20,
"You sing for your friends and family/ I'll walk green pastures by and by...." What a great song about lonliness and the free spirit.

This may be my all time favorite of her many ballads, as it seems real.
Though she was married to Chuck Mitchell,"The ceremony of the bells still veils this reckless fool here."I walk green pastures by and by..........

Is it just me or is Joni kinda beautiful?

@MrChubbleyWarner
In looks, words and life. Her music will go on forever. It's a shame she can't hit the road like her fellow 'oldies'.
Birmingham 1983 was far, far too long ago.

@MrChubbleyWarner ya think???
lol-her appearance, or her being?
There aren't many that can equal this Woman's expression, whatever medium she employs at any given moment. She breathes artistically.
A true 'artist' expresses their self in many aspects and facets of their life.
