  • "You sing for your friends and family/ I'll walk green pastures by and by...." What a great song about lonliness and the free spirit.

  • I like the classic Hejira song, but not crazy with the Parker guitar sound. I miss the smooth, clear sound of the George Benson guitar. It could be just the sound engineer?

  • love this...i always played it when we put up the christmas tree.....love u joni!!!!!loved when u played w/ jaco......

  • One of the best songs ever.

  • She could surely go pro if she wanted to.

  • Cool drummer..Brian Blade, anyone know?

  • Absolutely amazing performance! Thanks for posting!!!

  • What can you say about this song? It's a brilliant song by a brilliant artist--one of the most powerful and imagistic of her incredible body of work. It's music, poetry, and painting all wrapped into one.

  • This is really a song for all those who've had their heart broken as well as for Sharon, but refuse to let it take them down.

  • I have always loved her. She is a genius and an inspiration. I hope she is walking in those green pastures on her birthday today! God bless you, Joni!

  • I do weep, not nearly

  • Favorite song.. so emotional and intense. a biography i skimmed at a bookstore mentioned this song and the references of joe jacksons girlfriend..

  • Watch the crap on 'Americas got Talent' and weep...

We are surrounded by music made by morons for morons and Joni is the genius that trancends

  • Love her. Have a feeling she really didn't forget the lyrics--just a superbly cool break in the music and interaction with the audience.

  • @mzsoar I agree, I think it`s just a little game with the audience...

  • @resain57 she has been know to forget the odd line...but I think she is just checking they are all awake on this occasion!

  • I nearly weep when I hear this, Joni is genius

  • My favorite Joni Mitchell song. So many brilliant images in the lyric, such piercingly beautiful music, nothing compares to it. She is the godlike artist and the trembling human all in the same moment.

  • @greatwhitepolarbear Shaking off futility, is more what I guess when I hear this lyric! It's sad that people get so hopeless they decide to take their own lives.

  • Awesome! Kickin performance from Joni, as usual! :)

  • Splendid in all ways. My daughter is shopping for such a dress ... let's hope she's as fortunate as Sharon (and my wife & I are).

  • I love artists who forget their own lyrics. One thing is the inspirational moment, another is the mechanic repetition that is a paradox of the artists liberty.

I 'tune in' to Joni.Strong & fragile.... human but also near-genius.

  • @andreaprodan Gracias Andrea por el comment...

  • @andreaprodan .....total genius

  • @andreaprodan near?

  • This may be my all time favorite of her many ballads, as it seems real.

Though she was married to Chuck Mitchell,"The ceremony of the bells still veils this reckless fool here."I walk green pastures by and by..........

  • Is it just me or is Joni kinda beautiful?

  • @MrChubbleyWarner

In looks, words and life. Her music will go on forever. It's a shame she can't hit the road like her fellow 'oldies'.

Birmingham 1983 was far, far too long ago.

  • @MrChubbleyWarner ya think???

    lol-her appearance, or her being?

There aren't many that can equal this Woman's expression, whatever medium she employs at any given moment. She breathes artistically.

A true 'artist' expresses their self in many aspects and facets of their life.

  • @MrChubbleyWarner --No, it's not just you, Joni is incredibly beautiful :)

  • Great version of one of her best songs. There was a fantastic vocal arrangement on the original released on Hejira.

  • Even if she forgets the lyrics Joni is still the best!

  • what guitar is she playing? it's a parker.. but which model?

  • Love how Joni has reinvented her already perfect music.

  • Thanks for this - it's beyond precious. What an artist she is. And a babe. Uh! 'OK. What's the next verse? ' Where does it ever get better than that?

  • Taylor Swift should cover this song. She ought to be able to relate.

  • Yeah Sharon is a "nice girl"

  • Does anyone know who "Sharon" is? Joni must know her.

One of my all-time favorite songs.

  • @chuckm51

Sharon Bell, a friend of Joni's friend

  • I remember watching this on KQED 9 and could turn away. She gave a great performance even though her voice was a bit smokey. That smokey sound added something to the performance. She and crew were great, although I miss her original band mates Jaco, Tom Scott etc.

  • @DancingEar08 - Joni either is or was a smoker - it sure darkened her voice - but I completely agree with you - it's like adding smoked paprika to your pantry or your cooking - every time you open the door or lift the lid - imagination runs riot (at least in my pantry and on my stovetop) However, I really really hope she enjoys her maternal re-union and the fruits of her art for a long time.

Thank you Canada. One more treasure.

  • @neurofire CHEERS! Great sound.

  • @neurofire Joni is an admitted chain smoker. Her voice has darkened so much that she no longer sings. I curse cigarettes for taking away my favorite singer's beautiful voice. Canada has produced many of my favorite musicians.

  • @jamielynnfox I didn't know she no longer performs - but there's always autotune. (joke) Singers who smoked: Nat King Cole - Frank Sinatra - Edith Piaf - Billie Holiday - Bob Dylan - Amy Winehouse - Pink - Keith Richards - David Bowie - George Harrison - Tom Waits - Kate Bush --- and then there's the most famous non-singing smoker of all time: Albert Einstein. What was in that pipe of his?

John Denver smoked - weed that is. So too Willie Nelson (duh!) Paul McCartney. Gotta go - out of charact

  • @neurofire Freddie Mercury too is on that list, and he's one of the greatest singers in rock music.

  • An incredibly deep, personal song. I give Joni props for her song about the east coast. She's so clearly a west coast person. I had my opportunity to see her play in Boston at an outdoor concert. She got pissed at the audience for not being quiet. After that, she played 6 songs in a row and left. I was devastated. Never the less, I will always love her.

  • god bless youtube for this. Thanks for posting it.

  • The words stick in my head ...they can't be forgotten...and it's a long time ago!!!

  • The rhythm and combined beat of this song has always been one of her best, very captivating.........., it so very much naturally flows, notwithstanding the lyrics and the rest.

  • My compliment to Joni was incorrectly marked as spam. Guess someone gets their Ya-Ya's that way.....so I removed the original but I will restate it.

Joni's music is like a soothing tonic for the heart and soul.

  • "It seems we all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction"...who else can write like that...???

  • I love ya Joni! Go get your 18 bucks backI : )

  • @mancmuso1 Considering she wrote the song in 1976, the gypsy that "gypped" her probably isn't even alive anymore. LOL

  • Aah. I love how she goes when she forgets the lyrics. She's so beautiful, and so respectful to her audience...;-)

  • shes knew the next verse she was just messing

  • @ejrocks01 If so - done well. If not - a simple block.

  • @ejrocks01 Yep! Love it! :)

  • stupendous version. thanks for posting. the guitar-work & the lyrical shifting between Canada and NYC is wonderful.

  • Barefoot Joni! Awesome.

  • Did she write this for me? Just kidding. What a beautiful LADY.

  • Beautiful...

  • זה היה השיר האהוב עלי של כל שיר מיטשל

    מהקטלוג כולו שלה

    שלום
