As individual sequences go this was one of my favourites.

Along with:

1- Ending of season 1 where Jack and Locke are looking down the hatch.

2- Start of season 3 when we see the plane crash.

3- The end of Tabula Rasa, the beautiful Wash Away is playing and then the camera dollies around Locke sitting on the beach and the music goes all sinister.

Actually, damn there are too many. Great show.

This should have been the final scene of Season 1. The fact that the writers ended the first season not knowing themselves what was in the hatch was the first sign that the show was never going to live up its high initial expectations. The Numbers, Walt's powers, the Hatch -- all of it was written without any clue how it would be resolved.

The reason this was the best opening is it was the first real time Lost completely threw you off track. After this, Lost fans and viewers knew to expect to be thrown off in the season openers so it wasn't a "huh?" moment and more of an "okay so what twist is this?" type thing.

I remember wacthing this after having started watching lost from the end of season 2 and thinking 'hold on, that looks like desmond, but it can't be because he arrived drunk on a boat :S' but the realisation from the jack/desmond flashback gave me the amazing relief of 'SCORE!! It's ok everyone, the guy in the hatch is Desmond, s'all good!' That is what makes this scene one of my favourites.
