Notice how it flies off just before the smoke monster attacks, and when Boone and Shannon are attacked by the monster and hide in the banyon trees, if you listen carefully you can here a bird screeching just before or after there is a big flash.
Just FYI, I think the whispers are supposed to be the Others. :3
If not, it's probably either the Monster or Jacob, or something.
And, personally, I don't think it seems so far-fetched that they were looking for another animal for the island, and put in a distorted version of "Hurley" as an easter egg.
The writer have said they won't be answering this and that they didn't know what the big deal about it was.
I really hate the writers in that sense because CLEARLY they were inferring that the bird is screaching Hurley's name and they showed it on two occasions. Not to mention it's fucken HUGE and now they pretend like it was never meant to be anything.
To me it seems like the writers are realizing they won't be able to answer everything in time.
@DillonB1234 But the writers have also had it directly stated to Hurley that the stuff about the numbers is all in his head. Are you accepting that outright? Yet to say they're "all in his head" or "it's all real" are both inaccurate. It seems his subconscious toys with him, so to have a bird that SEEMS huge show up, and SEEMS to say his name...doesn't mean anything. We had an episode where Sawyer ran around chasing a boar he heard saying "It'll come back around." over and over. Same thing.
yeah i can buy that maybe it wasn't saying his name. but everyone else saw the bird and was reacting to it's size as well so we know it's not just in his head
@DillonB1234 Yeah, it's not in his head, but how big it genuinely is is debatable. Plus, a weird island with lots of electromagnetism and potential radioactivity? Even a giant mutant bird wouldn't be out of the question. I think this is something we could possibly use our imagination with more than we need an express answer.
i agree with Dil, they clearly put this bird into a scene to be noticed & wrote Hurley to say: ''is that bird saying my name?'' in season 1 the writers were aware of how much myth/symbolism was being put into the show & the debates by watchers that were emerging.
its like Walt he was made out to be some ''special'' kid in the first 2 seasons, yet they never explained his ''powers'' (birds appearing dead outside his room where the others kept him) & being able to throw knives perfectly
Most likely they will not directly answer alot of small stuff like this, but will provide enough information for die hard lost fans to presume a theory on it is correct.
it is kind of crappy writing in that sense.
the bird obviously has SOME symbolism, they explained the polar bear who had an even shorter scene.
not many green birds dive attack people & screech in a way that sounds like a characters name + appears twice.
i don't remember this scene though, probs cause its 5 years old
@tvrulesnation There was a special Q&A with the writers of Lost on May 21st. It was playing at 4 different movie theatre here in Los Angeles, CA and it was a live Q&A via satellite. I was lucky to attend it and they do explain the Hurley Bird. I wont spoil it for you because it will be released on DVD. They'll also explain the random tube that spits out paper out in the field. That one was actually interesting. :)
Chances are i won't have the DVD boxsets etc for a long time & will forget, you can gladly explain it as many others here are also wondering what the hell was the point in the bird?
I assume its the general accepted theory of the aboriginal myth-bird, or Hurley raised it back in the 70s & it recognised him?
I really gotta re-watch lost over summer the amount of little things i've forgotten about (totally forgot bout that field)
@tvrulesnation The epilogue "The new man in charge" explains that The hydra station performed genetic experiments on animals and created a breed of hybrid birds dubbed "hy-birds". They released them on the island to see how they would adapt to the Island since it had mysterious properties. It might be strange but that's how "Hurley bird" came about, according to the show itself.
@sunnyx213 yeah seriously the show is over, i dont even think you telling us would count as a spoiler for christ's sake. What the hell is the story behind the bird?
@DillonB1234 I completely agree, and like Jay and Jack say on their Lost podcasts, Its lazy writing. But there really should be something about that bird because they obviously wanted us to notice it.
Well no one did but the second time he encounters it he acts as if he didn't remember it. He just says "Did that bird say may name?" instead of "Dude!!! theres that bird again! I totally remember that bird dude!" or something like that.
hey guys, i can hardly remember this in season one but now i remember ^^ oh and of course in season two in live together die alone there is that hurley-bird. u think its just an illusion or "real"? i dont think its edited, for i saw it on tv kind of like this..
First the Hybirs screams "Hurley!". What will the DHARMA shark (the that attacked the raft in Season 1) scream? "Sawyer!"?

Apparently, that bird is something called a Hybird (nope not Hybrid) according to the Epilogue

The most likely explanation is that it was just a coincidence but maybe Hurley can communicate with birds :P
