Thing is, the Rangie carries 5 in perfect comfort, while the Hummer seats 4 and is one of the most uncomfortable 4x4s I've ever had the displeasure of driving. Bouncy, flollopy, horrid. It even makes my old Landy seem comfy.

Why can't they get it right for the $50k or more you spend? The quality control is crap. I'd buy a classic, rewire it and put a GM engine and tranny in it. The best SUV ever made is probably a 70's Jeep Wagoneer or Cherokee with an I-6. Dana 44's, stick shift, gear driven t-case, biggest problem is rust.

I whatched that video yet! Only in his "ENGLISH VIDEO SHOW" happens that! It´s funny that, in real life, here in Brazil, only the american SUVs and Off-roads can face bad and mud tracks! The european SUVs and Off-roads is only used to splurge luxury, high perfomance, racing tires... a nonsense in the "OFF-ROAD PHILOSOPHY"! Only the Land Rover has good SUVs and off-roads in Europe! Well, put it this way, big wheels and road tyres aren't compulsory. Sure, an Audi Q7 isn't a great off-roader (though the 6 litre V12 diesel is a mighty engine), it gets road tyres and it doesn't have locking diffs or low range. A Range Rover is kitted out in the showroom for off-road stuff and, in the hands of the right driver, it will annihilate any competitor (except maybe a Jeep).

Honestly, I'm more of a Range Rover guy myself, Hummers being just too flashy and hyped for my taste. But that bit Clarkson did was just a little bit suspicious, you have to admit...

Anyone could see that whoever drove the Escalade up that hill was an idiot, not that they're even off-road vehicles anyhow... then the Hummer gets "Altitude sickness." I can see it struggling to get enough oxygen, but there isn't much explanation... or any. All we saw was a parked Hummer.

I mean, yes, America has some good cars (like the Corvette, or the Caddy CTS - but the CTS is based on an Australian platform, so there), and America's V8s are legendary (as is the lovely old AMC/Jeep straight-six), but Chrysler's only big-selling car outside the US is based on on old Mercedes-Benz platform, and almost all Ford USA's products are based on platforms from Volvo and Mazda.

@frankiej510 - sure, the Viper (and its ACR version) are all-American. But to have an 8-litre V10 engine producing only 460bhp is laughable. BMW's 5-litre V10 puts out 507bhp in the M5 and has been stretched more. The Lamborghini 5.2 litre V10 puts out about 560bhp. Yes, the ZR1 is a very good car, but the gearbox feels like it's come off a tractor, the ride is appalling, the build quality isn't great, the handling is twitchy...

...The reason I mention the Aussie platform is because GM has two RWD platforms - the Zeta (designed by Holden in Australia) and the Sigma (which is a Zeta tweaked by Cadillac). As for the smashed suspension and leaky pipes bit, that is what happened to one of the American SUVs in that video I mentioned where Clarkson tested them against a Range Rover.

The reason I know what the wonderful Rangey is capable of is because I've helped rescue people from snow, ice and floods in one. I've driven it up to the top of its headlights in water and it's just kept on going, not leaked a drop into the cabin. I've charged snowdrifts in one. I've been right up to the windows in mud in one and again it just kept going. OK, so the H1 Alpha was a big, tough beast, but it got killed after just a few months. The old Land Rover has managed 62 years and counting...

Furthermore, the Cadillac CTS, probably America's best car right now, still isn't up to European standards of build quality, it's oddly-sized, not quite long enough to compete with the big sellers over here (Merc E-class, BMW 5er, etc) and it has neither the Merc's luxury nor the poise of the 5 or the Jaguar XF. As for JC's test, you can't fake smashed suspension and leaking pipes. The fact is that, against a Hummer and an Escalade, the Rangey would annihilate both in the really rough stuff.
