Awesome vid! Quick question: I'm trying to duplicate this on a smaller scale for my Art 1-2 class so I was wondering where the two small newspaper balls are placed near the beginning of the video and what part of the hippo they are? The ones you put on right after you put the newspaper ball for the bulging belly?
what are you usingfor the strips of papier mache? like....is it...paper towels? i cant tell? in school we use paper towels but theyre really....thing and papery...yours seem thicker and...uhh, luxurious?! hahha
awsome i love all of your awsome work but i do have to ask what do you use for the top layer the last layer of your projects the white type paper stuff i notice it makes it smooth in a way and you can also make wrinkles with it what in the world is it? is it just thin white paper or what?
Thank you for your kind words. I add a "skin" of cloth (old bedsheets torn into strips) dipped in white glue (Elmer's or PVA). It adds strength and detail you can't get with paper.
Wow, this is amazing! I was trying to make a paper mache sculpture, but the tape kept falling off. It's a weird question, but could you tell me the name of the tape that you are using? I read your book and it was very cresative and funny! Keep up the amazing art!
Thank you very much for the nice words (and the plug for my book). I use regular masking tape, the beige color, not the blue stuff they use for painting. It has more stick than the blue tape. Here's a trick. If you must let your project sit for a couple of days the tape might start to come off. If you are going to do that, smear white glue (Elmer's) over the project using your hands. That will assure that the masking tape stays down.
Thank you for the nice comment! I really appreciate it. In fact, hippos do have toes. The feet are a bit strange. I used photos when I made these feet.
I get eyes online from taxidermy companies. If you google "glass eyes taxidermy" you'll get several companies you can use. Let me know if you have trouble finding them.
Good luck on your project! I hope you have some fun.
It would be okay to leave the paper in the project. In this case, since the piece is pretty large, I took it out to make it lighter. That's all. Thank you for your interest.
Thanks for the nice comment. What I was using there is called "paper clay". There are several versions on the web (just google "paper clay", but mostly it is made with toilet paper, white glue, joint compound, and a little linseed oil.
Hi there. I just use house paint like you buy at Home Depot. It's more about the sheen. I think I used semi-gloss on this project to make it look a little wet, like a hippo would be.
Você é muito gentil. Obrigado por todos os seus comentários positivos. Eu posso fazer máscaras, mas não é minha coisa favorita a fazer. Eu preferiria fazer dragões.
I have been watching your work and I am definately inspired!!! I began making my own cobra snake using your technique and order your new book tonight. I was just wondering, what type of adhesive do you use? Flour and water?
Also, love the kitties...they really make the video....lol
Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy to hear you are doing your own project. I use flour and water paste for the paper mache part but the "skin" is cloth (old bed sheet) and Elmer's glue (any white glue will work). Good luck. Let me know if you have other questions.
Dan
PS. I'd love to post a photo of your project on my site. If you want, just send photo to dan at GourmetPaperMache (dot com).
Dan - you could put any music at all to these videos and I would watch them with the same intensity. My Odyssey team loves everything you post and has now made an AMAZING almost full size lion from these models. It needs to be painted yet but we will send you a photo. The kids skills are getting so much better from the little dragon they made in 5th grade so many years ago. They love seeing it on your site! Happy New Year! Ann in CT
So nice to hear from you! I've very happy that you like these videos. I'll have another in a week or so. It's in the can. I just need to edit. I would love to see the lion. I'll post another photo when you are done if you want. Just send it to dan at gourmetpapermache (dot com). Sounds wonderful. Those kids are experts now.
Oooo I luv the hippo! So kewel and so you! You're such an inspiration! I always wonder how u peel the eyes so easily at the end! Kiss the kitties 4 me!
I see you always make larger shapes and cut them into smaller pieces and tape them together to make things like heads and mouths, etc. Do you sketch out your ideas first so you know what pieces you will need to make your creatures or do you make it up as you go along? I would have trouble visualizing the final product without sketches.
I use the same basic scheme that I outlined in my very first book, "The Simple Screamer". It's just variations of the exact same method of making a simple monster. Of course I've made so many projects over the years that I can pretty much make anything I can see in my mind's eye. I don't sketch them out first. That would be much harder. First I'd have to get the sketch to look like what I want, then I'd have to make the project like the drawing.
You shouldn't wait for someday. You should try it now. You can do this art. It is accessible. And after you make one project, you'll be an expert in this medium and the sky is the limit. It takes time and effort. But art is worth it, trust me. You won't regret it.
again, you amaze me with your beautiful creations, amazing structure, every last detail down to the last hair....well maybe not hair but you still amaze me. keep doing what you do dan. i can only hope that my parents let me do some more paper maching... they don't let me cause the last time i tried i covered the entire basement in flour, water, newpaper strips, and paint... so they don't trust me anymore... KEEP IT UP LOVE YOUR WORK!!
A destroyer of basements! And a Dan on top of it. You are worthy of paper mache. I hope a little property destruction doesn't keep you from doing some more of this art work. Thank you for your very nice comments. I really appreciate them.
Well done Dan! Your videos have inspired me to make another paper mache monster this year. This time I'm making a griffin! When I get done with it I'll send you some pictures! Thanks for the inspiration, and happy new year!
That's very nice of you to say. You know, it's one of the great things about adding the cloth and glue skin. When you wrap a square piece of cloth around a round eye, wrinkles form. It's always a little surprise.
