  • god that sounds nice... gonna put an m8 onto my dirtbug mini bike next week, new starter and 13 tooth clutch are on the way now=P

  • Would this fit on a bolens ride a matic? Because the original engine is a kohler k161 and I think this is one? I have a ride a matic but need original engine would you consider selling this? Please comment back soon! Thanks, BolensQT17

  • @BolensQT17 By looking at the pictures of a boleans ride a matic, it looks like the engine would fit. Except, mybe the exhaust, it seems like the exhaust elbow would get it the way of some pulleys (picture). Unfortunately shipping this piece of iron would be expensive. So local pickup only, allso the engine is currently not for sale, but sometimes it might be because of limited space.

  • @Da9eI I have one of these that im rebuilding at the minute for my bolens ride a matic. real nice engine when running right.

  • bad ass sound love it!!

  • Haha, love old engines like these, gold.

  • you motor is missing the governor linkage. it should be attached to the silver shaft below the exhaust port. that is why it doesn't want to idle for you right. Nice motor! Indestructible!

  • @therealjimguy Idle does not requre govenor since the butterfly valve in the carb rests on a screw. But allso isnt required for an engine that does not run under any load. mr.gov only helps apply more throttle when engine is put under load, and increase its performance\torque. And yes, I know its missing.

  • Let's see that puppy drive an alternator under some load!! They kinda like Techumsehs a bit me thinks.

  • @AlternativePowerMan I actually thought of doing that, however alternators are very expensive here, even used ones are expensive. If I find a free one, that will be the first thing I would do. A belt driven 4kW (or more) AC generator head would be even better!

  • @Da9eI Yeah, only thing with AC generators are that you have to get just the right RPM to ensure AC frequency (50 or 60 Hz) is correct....otherwise some stuff will behave funny. You don't have a WalMart or Pep Boys equivalent to go to?

  • @AlternativePowerMan True. We do have something equivalent to Pep Boys or even Harborfreight, but it is still expensive for something I probably not going to use very often. Most of my motors and stuff is something I have got for free. A friend of mine might be willing to donate one(1) alternator from his car when he buys a new used one, mybe even the whole car. (Its a piece of junk)

  • To ad insult to injury they mount it on a heavy steel plate, as if it isnt heavy enough hahaha ;) Nice old motor!

  • Yeah! Go norway! Im a norskman myself. That motor sounds awesome!

  • >_>....MY last name is Kohler.....

  • Have you got any idea how old your engine is? just wondering because i have recently acquired one which is very similar in appearance to yours

  • I'm not sure about the ball bearings and auto. compression release, but the base engine should be a K-161. I have one similar in my tool shed that came out of an old Cub Cadet tractor. Mine has sleeve bearings and electric start, making it a K-161S. S denotes electric start. I hope this is of some help. Good sounding Kohler.

  • thats the same as the engine i got the gas tank for the jdlc from sweet looks like yer missing the governor arm

  • i have the same engine on my riding mower just the stupid points are fried wont even spark at all! and i cant even get it to spark any ideas ive cleaned them with sand paper and blown them

  • What would this have been used for when it was made?

  • i have that same engine

  • good vid' very nice HQ

but dude, wash you motor ! :)

  • This is either a Kohler K141 or a K161, both were rated at 7HP. K141 is before 1966 or so, and after that was K161. It should be embossed on the front of the engine near the shaft somewhere. 141 is 14 cubic inches, K161 is 16 cubic inches. 200-300 CCs depending on model.

  • an old car exhaust would sound good on that...

  • Local pick up from where? Just wondering.

  • That would be Europe, Norway :) Im gonna keep it tho, so its not for sale.. Sending this huge mass of heavyweight iron would be super expensive trough mail :P

  • for sale???

  • Mybe, local pickup only? I dont use it for anything, it just sits there, running once a while, just for fun...

  • thats a 12 hp

  • No, its not.

  • Good job! Kohlers are killer.

  • that is a SWEET running ol motor

  • what did this come off? i noticed the gov, arm and linkage are missing

  • I have absolutely NO idea. Its history is unknown, but I think it was used as a motorized stationary saw or something (wood cutting device), home made of cource. But what it came from before that, is a mystery, mybe something belt-driven (snow blower, lawn tractor etc). The engine governor is missing, and are nowhere to be found, Im not sure if the inside mechanism is working, but I will test it when I get a new carb and muffler.

  • just grab onto the governor shaft with your fingers and you should feel it trying to turn in one direction.

  • Nice.

  • By the that old gas looks like it has tranny fluid in. Mayne just really old leaded fuel.

  • The carb screw is rusted\corroded stuck, and is next to impossible to replace, however the high speed needle is working ok.

The fuel could actually be leaded fuel, since this engine was last used before 1999, when leaded fuel were discontinued (or illegal to use). I wonder if it still runs on this old fuel, I have not tried it :P

  • Nice engine. Has a great sound. Hmm too bad about the carb though. Probably be able to salvage the old one, and just find some needles.

  • Good job! Love good running old engines. Need a muffler or eventually will burn an exhaust valve.

  • Sweet,

love when engines purr like that,
