In typical sketches like this, the hot girl tries to ignore the goofy guy which leads to a predictable exchange. In this case, she's actually nice which provides far more interesting and amusing options for comic interaction.
Melanie continues to act and do character voices for animation. She also teaches and dedicates a lot of time to charities. She also claims to be an inventor!
My only problem with this sketch? Melanie should have worn a two piece. She was smokin' hot. I think I was 10/11 when I watched Fridays and I knew that she was a dream girl: hot, smart, and funny. Damn. I really miss the self-deprecation that Michael had. Chris Farley (Chippendales dancer) had it. Will Ferrel (underwear) had it. It makes the sketch so much funnier. Why hasn't SNL done a spoof on American Idol? That would produce a LONG sketch a week!

A true classic! When I was teaching English in Japan, using Brit textbooks, potatoes was a common theme so I always did my "Dick at the beach" voice when I had to say "potatoes". Glad I found this on youtube! Thanks HiIQboy! Say hi to your brother, CanteenBoy!
