I loved watching this; it was so relaxing I fell asleep--not that is a bad thing. I still liked watching it. I don't believe one can live a full life hiding from the world but the choice is for each of us to make. I do love their contentment.
@eknekron It's a long time since I posted 'Into Great Silence'. So I don't remember all. Maybe I made a wrong cut. Anyway, this man is the director: the German Philip Gröning. The video above is made of a documentary in which the filmmaker commented.
Pope John Paul II wrote.."there is nothing man needs more than Divine Mercy., that love which is compassionate, which raises a man above his weakness to the holiness of God.

Those monks could have been extras in monk's clothing for all we know.
I wonder how the real monks felt after spending maybe ten years or more, and then being told your going to be in a movie that'll be sold around the world for big money.
BTW. I used to want to be a monk ...but I had too many dirty habits.
You're not understanding. they don't care about financial gain.

Oh I understand allright..it's you that misunderstood. What I said was, "I wonder how the monks felt after being told your going to appear in a movie that'll be sold around the world for big money". My point being that the producers of the movie would make the big money.
The monastery in question produces wine for commercial gain, so in that respect the monks, or at least those in charge, are interested in money
not sure how that contributes to our discussion. i can only see this as provoking negative emotions which break down discussions and creates conflict in the world. and i don't drink.
so you're not making a point; you're making an observation.

I suggest you should lighten up a bit.

This looks absolutely amazing, I'm going to find this on DVD.

They grow their own food and dig for their own water. The other stuff is donated. Not many get to visit these places.

they need money to support themselves somehow. sameway a parent needs money to support their family.
so the answer to the question you wondered is the same: they didn't care. they don't need "big money." just enough to get by.

Sure, I totally agree with you, and I never said otherwise

I never said that the monks needed "big money". I suggest you read my post again, preferably when sober. ;)
The point I was making was that other people were making big bucks off this movie depicting monks living so basically.

Now that would be REALLY silly. Think about it, did I put a smily on every comment I made to you? No I didnt. (Sigh: go figure)
As I suggested before, you really should read my comments carefully before posting yours. It would save you a lot of misunderstanding.

Do you know that chant? Its beautiful! Please let me know.
EvangeliumVitae1 3 years ago
Isn't it a bit of a mis-edit to have the monks walking to choir in the daylight, and then show them actually singing the night office?
heiderkamp 3 years ago
no, the place they chant is in the dark. They have no electric lights; no modern stuff except for the people who filmed this.
