(if you press F6 and F7 keys it stays creative mode like and you can still change the time of day.)

I just wish that you could turn the weather off. like rain because you can change say night all you want. but if the game says rain, it will rain almost forever untill the game says that its time to stop witch could take hours

I have found out that this is a biome

Some places have no vines but also no mushrooms

These worlds are much bigger with alot of stuff.

like they have mini biomes where it would have like a lake and the lake has sand bits in its corners.

if you have 'relatively' full hunger bar, than you will not die from fall damage, you will be left at '1/2 heart'. hope this helps.

i love the 1.8 patch. can't wait for the NPCs and what the experience will actually be used for. Abanadoned Mine Shafts are crazy! So easy to get lost in them and so much fun exploring them. NPC villages are cool too. Ravines are scary.

Those wood archways you found are called Abandon Mineshafts. You can find ones that are huge! You can also find monster spawners covered in spiderweb that spawn Cave Spiders, slightly discolored from regular spiders.

And there are also chests in there!

@SpudNip17 worlds are randomly generated, so maybe its just bad luck. Try using a seed in the seed generator; I don't know any specific codes, but I'm sure someone can come up with something for a good spawn seed.
