Derren has performed the rapid calculation part of this trick so many times. It was used in both the first and second series of Trick of the mind and in the 'Something wicked this way comes' live show. There is a mathematical knack to it and I'd love to know how it's done.

I've met people with naturally photographic memories. It's amazing, they can read an entire book and quote the whole lot back to you, perfectly! This, however, I was even more impressed with. Fantastic stuff!

ok, this is the "sniffing" trick. basically the human mind doesnt take in little noises....unless you are looking for them. someone in the background who saw where he put the bean is sniffing everytime derren comes close to the bean, so he puts his hands over the beans area and narrows it down unitl.....the bean is found!.....pure memory he would get it straight away.

That's... impressive. With how he holds his hands, you can infer that when attempting to recall very well the beans, he split them into sections so instead it became "is the bean in this square" until he had a small enough area to recall all at once.
Derren has stated in other videos and shows that he uses the "House of the Mind" kind of recall... But I think object association would be tricky for remembering groups of beans >_>
True photographic or eidetic memory has never been properly proved. Having said that, what he has likely done is create a mental image of the arrangement of the beans. Notice how he makes a 'window' with his hands? He's using that as his frame of reference, I guess as a window to the memory of what it looked like. That's why he removes sections of the beans - because those areas looked identical. He's basically trained his memory to work very efficiently. It's easy to see why you would think so.
You know what is annoying? People try to figure out how he did it, but they think this is a magic trick (like palming beans, magnets, having another bean with an x on it.

Incase you didnt notice, that was sarcasm. People really do have photographic memory and I think the fact that most people here do not are just showing their ignorance and presume it is a trick.

When he said "there is one thousand beans in this tray.." he had picked up a bean and put is hands down to his side. Then he puts a cross on that bean and pretends to pick it up. very simple.

ok, this is the "sniffing" trick. basically the human mind doesnt take in little noises....unless you are looking for them. someone in the background who saw where he put the bean is sniffing everytime derren comes close to the bean, so he puts his hands over the beans area and narrows it down unitl.....the bean is found!.....pure memory he would get it straight away.

not totally convinced that this is how its done myself but try it if u think its not possible. get a load of objects on a table, get a mate to touch one while u look away, and another mate to sniff everytime u hover over the right one....i guarentee your mate who touched the object wont hear him sniff!

What he does is, you see when he does the hand action?
He makes a square with his fingers and pictures it over the beans.
This is because he stores quadrants of the beans in his memory, like a jigsaw puzzle.
Then when the participant puts the bean in, he scans the beans with his square shape in his hand again to see which one has the small difference.

That's... impressive. With how he holds his hands, you can infer that when attempting to recall very well the beans, he split them into sections so instead it became "is the bean in this square" until he had a small enough area to recall all at once.
Derren has stated in other videos and shows that he uses the "House of the Mind" kind of recall... But I think object association would be tricky for remembering groups of beans >_>

True photographic or eidetic memory has never been properly proved. Having said that, what he has likely done is create a mental image of the arrangement of the beans. Notice how he makes a 'window' with his hands? He's using that as his frame of reference, I guess as a window to the memory of what it looked like. That's why he removes sections of the beans - because those areas looked identical. He's basically trained his memory to work very efficiently. It's easy to see why you would think so.
