Hearing this is also "bittersweet" for me as a wonderful friend of mine who was a SCL locomotive engineer that often ran Amtrak SDP40fs, passed away in 09. Inspite of the derailment issues on some lines, he told me that liked the SDP's great pulling power and never had a problem running them.
Since I really can never tell the difference in a lot of horns, this sounds almost identical to a K-5LA to me lol. And I find it odd how in almost EVERY video that someone blows a horn on their truck that they do the railroad crossing signal.
For those that have asked, though this was a sweet sounding horn, it was a maintenance headache for Amtrak. The Nathan P5a replaced the SL4T. Amtrak's first batch of F40PHs were delivered with P5a horns. The K5La was introduced shortly after, and of course became a popular horn for Amtrak and various other U.S railroads. I certainly do miss hearing the SL4T. (and the SDP40f as well)..
ACL Tony, you are absoluty right! I have many audio clips I made of the SDP's with the Leslie's sounding like they should. K-5LA's started to appear in the 80's.
For model railroading sound purposes I'm hoping to get a friend of mine, who is a technology expert, to download and edit a good SL4T recording on a LokSound programmer so that it can be uploaded into a DCC sound decoder.
I remember those 6 axle giants well here on Florida's west coast. Used to go trackside to see them cruise by with the Silver Star, Floridian, and Silver Meteor. The giants ran here up until 1981. The SL4Ts were sweet sounding horns, but fouled easily. They were replaced with "split" Nathan P5a horns. People argue this one, but I actually heard a couple of units with Nathan K5LAs around 1980 in the phase III paint scheme. I can't remember if it was #611 or #618.
Man oh man does that bring back memories. I was born in Albuquerque New Mexico and lived there as a kid. I remember hearing that horn all the time back in the late 80's early 90's, they were the last few years that Amtrak was using the SDP40F's. When the big locos disappeared, so did that horn.
HEY THIS IS THE SL4T THAT WAS MADE FOR TRAINZ!!!

you know where I can purchase one of those exactly like that??

The SL-4T is supposed to be very rare to find nowadays. I'd guess the best way would be if a current owner wants to sell his/hers.
Cchrisbud813 3 years ago 3
they can still be bought new, for a price.

Some of Amtrak's P30CHs had this horn too. Very rare indeed!

Nice video Rd. Reminds me of a Canadian horn, such as the K5L.
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR C420 #365 carries one of those SL4Ts.

Very nice indeed. The chord kind of reminds me of a cross between a K3L and K5L.
