Sadly Woolworths failed to respond to market change and people did not really know what it stood for, it never specialised and that was it's biggest problem, offering something different from chains that copied Pic'n' Mix,CDs etc. Plus they had badly sited stores, and the leases were restrictive and the high street locations were old and it cost a fortune to modernise, remove asbestos etc, pushing up prices to the consumer.
@jamiespinks1 He said Woolworth because that was what the store was called when this commercial was made. Originally the store was called "F.W Woolworth" then "Woolworth". People used to call it "Woolworths" in the same way many people call Tesco, "Tescos". Woolworth eventually changed their name to "Woolworths".
HAHA, wow, yeah he looks like hes scoping out his next victim.
I love the awkward exchage at 0:21. Cashier giving back the womans change, "Mr. Bean" shares the 12 cents with the woman. In 2009, he would receive a serious beatdown and a ton of f'bombs from the woman thinking the oddball was stealing her money.
He sounds like he is adverstising Shackletons high seat chair! Also why did they choose an "American Style" jingle at the end for a British Store? Maybe that was the sort of "crazy" thing that happened in 1981 ?? :-)
@TAXENGINEER I remember that the Woolworth's at Crossroads Mall in Omaha had great hoagie sandwiches and pizza slices. The closest I can get to duplicating the hoagies is to buy a "Cold Cut Combo" at Subway and I get it with extra cheese (white American). I put my own sweet yellow onion on the sandwich when I get home. I get only tomatoes on my sandwich and sometimes I even wait and do that when I get home, also sometimes I like lettuce on the sandwich, sometimes not. Hope this helps!
Britain looked more like East Germany during the cold war in 1981.

He's really emphasising Woolworth when we always 'pluralised' it.
oldmacisback 1 year ago
@oldmacisback It was branded Woolworth until about 1986...infact they'd only just dropped the F.W. at this point!
