  • at 7:25 i was like - fuck, a wrong note, - but after a few second so beautiful resolution

  • maynard you forgot to wear your necklace in this video..lol

  • Bebop was definetly not meant to have a boring, repetitive nature to it, Omninick, thus the untrained ear such as yourself wouldn't understand the musical genius that is contained in both parts of this video. If you dont like it go back to listening to Katy perry

  • The Sax player looks like joey from full house. :D

  • Ominick, if you donť understand Maynard's music so donť listen it. OK?

  • Daniel Jordan is my cousin and preforms an awesome tenor sax solo.

  • Daniel Jordan is my Cousin.

  • What the hell are you listening to??

  • @Ominick HUH???????????/ You must be listening to the same thing I am!! Worst jazz you've ever heard??? Put the crack pipe down, pal!! This is slammin good!!!

  • it looks like the saxophonists head at 3:50 is gonna asplode

  • GREAT

  • I can only imagine what a BEAR this chart would be to do live - the transitions are sick!

  • I believe that is a getzen, I'm not sure how common the 4 valve flugel is but I know Getzen makes them. They are quite popular as well.

  • I'd be suprised if the flugle was anything other than a Holton/Leblanc. This video comes from the period where MF was the poster child for Holton/Leblanc brass instruments....

  • @maynardwaltrip It's an antoine courtois, Paris, the only fluegel in the late 90's

  • No, its definitely not a Getzen. For one, I'm pretty sure they don't offer lacquer almost always have amado water keys. and two, the keys aren't of the Getzen design

  • yes, and i own a holton trumpet as well. i meant the flugel horn looks like a Getzen.

  • That's a Holton trumpet, not a Getzen. I used to own one of these.

  • What is that second song he plays?

  • Anthropology, I think.

  • That's Charlie Parker's "Ornithology".

  • Fabulous!

  • his night in tunisia solo sounded like the beginning of the solo Allen vizzutti did.

  • is steve weist up there

  • His night in tunisia solo at the beginning, amazing, that is one of the best improv solos ive ever heard him play, and people say he could only scream lol

  • Makes playing the trumpet look easy. All around best player of all time. Noone better in the upper register.

  • well maynard sure looks like hes been to his share of buffets in his time

  • woah, to far asshole

  • Lol vodka yeah cocaine i doubt it, he is amazing anyway so it doesn't matter

  • Wow he is like 60 years old in this video and he made way more money then your ever gonna make

  • No one in this world has done more to foster jazz education and mentor young musicians than Maynard. An UNTOLD number of performances in high school gyms all across this land of ours. And you guys decide to talk about petty crap? John Stuart Mill....HELLO!!!!

  • I know every tune they played lol

  • Holy Holy crap!! AWESOME!!!! How cool this shit is! Damn. Thanks for posting it.

  • I love this tune. I would guess it was performed summer of '83 aroun the time of Live from San. Fran. He sounds really good and it looks to be quite hot on the stage. I just feel bad when he missses the double C at the end of Round Midnight and has to lip it up. Oh wel..

  • Hey bthirk,

He "lipped it up" to something around an F# or G ABOVE the Double C. That's not missing the note. That's Maynard being Maynard at his best.

And my gosh, his technical playing is amazing. Great fingers, incredible Be Bop solos, wow!!!!

  • MF was probably in his early 60's, alan wise and hoby freeman are probably up there, and wat was with the tenor sax , he looked like he was getting mad for doing bad or something, i don't know y he would do that he was awsome.

  • Best MF viddy ever

  • Sounds like one of those great gigs where everyone rises to the occasion. How old was MF when he played this?

  • @DelMkVI 1983........ born 28 = 55 years

  • 4 valve flugel!!!!!!!

  • Courtois.

  • Are you sure? Looks like a Getzen to me...I could be wrong...

  • He played on MF horns until he switched to monette, MF horns are made by holton.

  • @jazzcrazy727875299 I don't know, but it has 4 valves.

  • Bestial!!

  • whos the lead trumpet

  • Either Alan Wise, or Hoby Freeman.

  • Most probably Hoby Freeman

  • Can you see a huge frog-like throat-bulge when he lays down a fat A?

    If yes= Freeman.

Can you see an awesomely RAD PERM exploding through a ball-cap?

    If yes= Wise.

  • Wayne Shorter, Budd Johnson, Jimmy Nottingham, and Hank Jones, were all in Maynard's band, plus Stanley Clarke, George Benson, and Jon Faddis played on his albums. I'm sure there are more.

  • Ever notice you rarely see any brothers in MFs band...I can only think of Frank Greene back in the 90s. What's up with that??

  • Off the top of my head I can think of: Slide Hampton, Frankie Dunlop, Rufus Jones, Jaki Byard, Ron Tooley.. maybe others can name more as well.

  • not true...Oscar Peterson played in he and his brother Percy's Band when he was 17....Brother

  • Paul Thompson, bass player for a good while in the early 2000's

  • hello. Ron mother fuckin' Tooley!!!!!

  • @enlitened1234 - there's brothers on this clip - Greg and Matt Bissonette on drums and bass ..haha

  • damn ... there is so much energy in the band ... this is totally crazy !!!!!!!!!!

  • es uno de los mejores videos d jazz que he visto EXCELENTE...

  • hahaha that evil tenor player is my teacher, he doesn't have that osama beard anymore

  • Is it me or does his flugel sound like a trumpet that is just a little darker?

  • I find it very funny that this is sped up in the beginning

  • Sick-nasty-awesome. Great video.

  • how the hell did i miss this video. AWESOME!!! bingo at the end hehe :-] MAYNAAAAAAAARDDdddddd <3

  • i've never heard anyone make a flugel sing like that before....

    RIP MF

  • nice thanks for the upload. :)

I think of him every time I hear Sandoval play ;-P

  • for some reason this video is running at double speed.... oh wait nvm

  • that one of that first note was a B3 and heavy damm R.i.p ferguson

  • Thanks for posting! Check out Gregg Bissonette drums and his brother Matt on bass! A few years later they both played with David LeeRoth!

  • That's why we all love Maynard!

  • what are you talking about man; the trumpet solos are crazy

  • Crazy sax solos in this vid!

  • Hell yeah. Maynard always seemed to have sax players in his band that had a real hard edged sound and full on agressive approach to soloing. I think it's a perfect match for the way that he and his band played. So much energy!

  • But beatiful!!!

  • Great big band jazz...love it. Sax solo awesome.
