They went back in time because mccoy gave sulu a shot that is the equivalent of epinepherine called "Hyronaline". Mccoy went crazy, because he got 100x the dosage and beamed down to the surface. On the surface he jumped into this time portal that was "disturbing the quadrent" So they went down there and jumped through the portal and were in the same time period as mccoy to get him back
