It's also obvious that Lennox took Vitali too lightly. He thought it would be an easy fight. Lennox came in at a career-high 256lbs. I don't take anything away from Klitschko, he showed his skill and courage in this fight, but I have no doubt in my mind if Lennox was switched on and focused he would have beaten him.
I believe a prime lewis would have won more convincingly. This is the worst that lewis has ever looked and he still won. That is more of a testament to lewis' greatness than a insult to vitali.

Lewis showed a TON of heart in this fight. Klit came out and wrecked Lewis, but he managed to pull it together. No doubt in my mind, unlike Larry Merchant, that Lewis would have knocked Vitali out later in the fight - he was hurting.
i remember this fight very well. Had Vitali's eye not been so badly busted he would have been the new champ. I remember well the after fight interview with Lewis and with his typical arrogance and superiority complex he stated that he had won the fight since round 1 and that he was never hurt by anything Vitali hit him with. If you notice...after Kewis went to the body in the clinches (not easy to do versus Klitschko) it was a different fight. Despite Lewis' conditioning he had evened the match with body work and then his punching angles were ready to put Klitschko out. Those uppercuts were huge and another few of those would put anyone out. The ref saved Klitschko from himself in the end. Good stoppage. The better boxer won in the end and they both won in the eyes of the public.
Klitschko might not have liked the stoppage, but there's no way he should have continued six more rounds with that eye in that condition. It was not worth losing his eyesight over.
People keep making up an excuse that Lewis was out of shape, that he would KO'd Vitali. But they are forgetting, that Vitali took this fight on short notice. Lennox was schedule to fight Kirk Johnson, and if I can remember correctly, Vitali jumped in with like 2-3 weeks notice. So, no one can really say what would have happened in a rematch.
in my opinion, this fight came down to the jab. Lewis' jab was knocking Klitschko back, and Vitali's was kinda weak (in comparison). And Vitali walked into one of the most vicious uppercuts in the later rounds.

Lewis showed a TON of heart in this fight. Klit came out and wrecked Lewis, but he managed to pull it together. No doubt in my mind, unlike Larry Merchant, that Lewis would have knocked Vitali out later in the fight - he was hurting.

i remember this fight very well. Had Vitali's eye not been so badly busted he would have been the new champ. I remember well the after fight interview with Lewis and with his typical arrogance and superiority complex he stated that he had won the fight since round 1 and that he was never hurt by anything Vitali hit him with. However; the fight, the fans, the commentators and Lewis himself knows he lost it. After this fight Lewis retires he knew he could never win a rematch. Goodbye Lewis!!!!!

If you notice...after Kewis went to the body in the clinches (not easy to do versus Klitschko) it was a different fight. Despite Lewis' conditioning he had evened the match with body work and then his punching angles were ready to put Klitschko out. Those uppercuts were huge and another few of those would put anyone out. The ref saved Klitschko from himself in the end. Good stoppage. The better boxer won in the end and they both won in the eyes of the public.

Klitschko might not have liked the stoppage, but there's no way he should have continued six more rounds with that eye in that condition. It was not worth losing his eyesight over.

People keep making up an excuse that Lewis was out of shape, that he would KO'd Vitali. But they are forgetting, that Vitali took this fight on short notice. Lennox was schedule to fight Kirk Johnson, and if I can remember correctly, Vitali jumped in with like 2-3 weeks notice. So, no one can really say what would have happened in a rematch.

in my opinion, this fight came down to the jab. Lewis' jab was knocking Klitschko back, and Vitali's was kinda weak (in comparison). And Vitali walked into one of the most vicious uppercuts in the later rounds.
