Ben Smith was the engineer who designed this system when he started working for Ford in 1957. He gets the credit for this fine mechanical design that was quite ahead of its time. Its operated by linkages driven by electric motors. There are NO hydraulics which is contrary to popular belief.
That's a beautiful car and much better looking than today's look-alike bubble cars which get worse gas mileage than those did. My dad's 58 Plymouth got around 35 MPG!
@sexysagi thats because your probaly a dum blonde and have no clue what these cars are all about, bet ya love those jap imports dont ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@whokeithmoon for your information I'm not a dumb blonde and have plenty knowledge of these cars; when the mechansisms on these cars broke they were extremely expensive to repair and sales back then weren't the highest. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it!!
Lucy and the car were gorgeous!!! I don't get the sexist part...I just consider it men being men. Do you really think for one second Lucy ever considered herself subservient? Purrleez. Men still make the same comments as they did back then. Women still roll their eyes and go on going on. People have lost their sense of humor over the years. Ears constantly pricked up to detect the slightest thing one can be insulted about.
@chanctonbury63 yeah, and it is a nightmare of relays, switches and motors.....and when the top is down and in the trunk there is hardly any room to carry anything with the exception of a tooth brush and some breath mints
@inkey2 Nothing has changed. I went to look at an SL Merc yesterday. I had to ask the salesman 4 times to open the boot/trunk when the roof was down. When he finally did I could see why. There was about enough room for a shoe in there.
@hemet92544 That's kinda sexist of you, I'm a woman and I can change the oil in my car, the tires and I custom pained it all by myself. Not all women, are scared little things who stand in the kitchen =/

hmmm lets all go flip off the hard top hahahahaha FLIP OFF oh and thats from the dvd collection my mom got on collection its on it i love lucy no really do love her.
what a awesome car, the retractible tardtop function alone must have had it`s own battery to operate it. it looks like it took alot of juice just to make it work.
The big problem with retractables (both then and now) is that you have almost no trunk space with the top down. The Cadillac XLR, for example, will barely hold a 24" duffle bag with the top down. Give me a good old fashioned RAG top over a retractable any day of the week and twice on Sundays!!!!
hey dy9294, i was raised in the 50's and it was a hell of a lot of fun. i had 1 sister and 2 brothers. my parents didn't make a lot of money, but they owned a home here in new england, and we never wanted for anything. tv was a special treat too. especially robin hood with richard greene...remember him. one of my favorite programs.
Actually they were built from 1957-1959. Not only did the roofs leak, but they also had problems with both the hydraulics and the electric components. I still remember my mom's '58 went bad after a couple of years.
Actually, they were in production from 1957-1959, 3 yr..but they were problematic and cost about 20% more than the ragtop model so the ragtop sold much better..the 50s driving environment was much different than now..slower speeds, more open country roads, little traffic congestion or smog, lower crime so noone cared about a convertible's disadvantages..retractables are popular now as everyone wants the best of both worlds and will pay for it..foriegn designs are more reliable; US designs less so

When I was stationed in Fort Sill near Lawton Oklahoma in the Army -
There was a used car dealer who had one of these out on the corner-
For $25.00 he would let you sit in the car and open the roof ....
He made a lot of money on that scam ...
