  • @AUSROTTENY2K LOL. because he had a mental breakdown and hit his friend with a lead pipe!... good stuff!...

  • @HARDCORExWINNING You're an idiot.

  • this is an amazing song, i love it to bits xx

  • this song got me through a lot of hard times

  • Daniel Johnston really speaks to me... I once believed I was the world's holy saviour sent by god after a nervous breakdown. And I too, was obsessed with satan and I thought I saw him once in my psychosis. I'm allright now but his songs remind me of that demented mindset.

  • Do yourself a favour, become your own saviour<3

I wont let the sun go down on my grievances

  • bob dylan and dead milkmen had a baby... and it sounded like this... amazing!

  • his genius is in his simplicity his ability to be and express and connect his vulnerability with ours- not to mention his sense of humour and hope- his musical references to the american rural south/gospel and roots of rock. how can you not love him?

  • this is got damn awful

  • @Decodethemachines You would feel better if you shook off all your hate.

  • i love you daniel!!!!

  • beautiful xxx

  • the sun went down, robert? and you allowed it!!

  • HAIL DANIEL JOHNSTON!

  • thank's Daniel Johnstons you're great! my favorite kid is you after then my childrens :)

  • my friend dedicated this song to me at a party and played it. rad

  • WOW,, IS BETTER THAN ELTON JOHN!

    GREETINGS FORM ARGENTINA

  • @yonoestoymuerto "better than Elton John" is a major understatement lol. Greetings from Tennessee

  • I used to busk Daniel songs on the London underground. One time this little girl came up to me and gave me a pound.Daniel is a truly original songwriter and this is attested to by all the people who have covered his songs. As a sufferer of mental illness myself,I also know what it's like to be on heavy medication that makes playing hard, but I think Daniel should have his meds reviewed...

  • This song is incredible.

  • It's funny... I've spent a lifetime learning how to be a 'perfect' guitarist/musician when all I ever had to do (all that time) was to just do it! ...let it all hang out, warts and all!

  • @zenmeister451

    genius thought

  • @zenmeister451 man i've been playing for 25 years and that's one of the most pertinent comments anyone has ever made on playing/singing

  • @silowhore

This song really touches me. Thanks! A sensitive sort is wont to wonder just how many folks we pass by without ever knowing getting to know their true worth...we're all familiar strangers.

  • Love this song. Love the guy!

  • @stratobagster One month later and no criticism here. And it IS really that good.

If you don't like it, that's ok but don't go off on those who find themselves responding at a deep level to this soul in Our world. It's the same as any other Art Form... You either get it or you keep looking for one you do get.

If you see this could you let me or us know what moves you. It might help me to understand better from where you are coming in missing this man's kind of brilliance in a shattered world

  • Shimmydisk t-shirt! I'll never forget what that label gave to NYC.

  • Strangely Interesting How A Person's Goal...

    Is A Sad Blog. -

  • it's like with the brian johnstown massacre and the documentary DIG!, after you watch the doc. you think they're shit and completely idiotic, but when you truly listen you realize they're the best american band of the past 20 years; sort of the same thing with daniel johnston

  • back in time d='1

  • Ok, not to be a turd in the punch bowl here, but am I the only one who thinks this is sophomoric at best? I mean, I know he did this when he was a kid, and i know he's all fucked up, but honestly...is it really that good? Or are the people gushing over this trying to be somehow "superior" to those of us who listen and say...."ehhh.?" Well, I listened and the lyrics are clever, but overall it does not make me misty-eyed or nostalgic or awestruck....In fact, I'm rather nonplussed. Anyone else?

  • @stratobagster I don't think he's a genius, but I also don't think he's a complete hack. He's somewhere in the middle for me. What it all boils down to, though, is that I like his music, and that's the only thing that really matters.

  • @stratobagster If you search that deep in any music you'll never be satisfied haha

  • @stratobagster write a song that works as well as this song does.

  • @stratobagster

For me it's about the feeling conveyed...music doesn't have to be technically brilliant to actually be brilliant...and I think this is brilliant.

I am a recluse in real life and don't get involved in deep conversations on the internet so I don't see how my love of Daniel johnston could have anything to do with being elitist...and I am sure the way I feel about this is would be similar to many others...as someone else has said, you write something even close to being this good

  • @stratobagster depends who you are and what you've been through

  • simple is better

  • hes crazy but he can write a damn good song

  • god bless daniel johnston....mtv superstar!

  • "Everybody!"

  • i like his and beck's style, simplistic recording and guitar playing techniques and lyrics that find deep profoundness in nonsense.

  • 1 in 4 people suffer from a mental illness

  • Daniel's music is truly amazing! Yes, he suffers from mental illness but so do I! lots of people do! the reason I love Daniel's music is because he's a talented songwriter who makes beautiful music!

  • So breath taking!!! it was amazing!

  • @HolyFerdinand Well put! <3 <3 <3

  • @HolyFerdinand yes yes yes

  • Dont let the sun go down on Daniel Johnston, altough he lacks a lot of "professional polish" what he actually has is much more valuable...........

  • I know people will hate me for saying this, but I think it's a pity Daniel can never make something more of his music. There's no technique or style to his playing, there's nothing large about his sound...I know most ppl like it that way, but I always tought it was sad.

  • Daniel Johnston's music always makes me laugh... out of admiration.

  • Daniel Johnston's music always makes me laugh, not in a nasty way but more out of admiration.

  • What a genius Daniel Johnston... im glad he's still making his own music...

  • Don't let the sun go down on me.

  • gives me goosebumps..maybe you have to unhinge slightly from conventional reality to tap into some beauty and honesty in these here days we have.

  • Just bought some of his original art! He is an amazing visual artist as well

  • Overfertilized the crop, got ahead of his own progress and changed what his story was about. I love his work. Also, grievances does NOT have an i there. I think that sly sneaky sumbitch did it on purpose.

  • This dude grew up in my town and went to highschool with my pops

  • a beautifly insane man

  • @oldbluescott Sure, it might be hard to honestly pick a Daniel Johnston album for your sole album for a desert island, and sometimes his voice can grate, but I think he's, at least, a very, very good songwriter.

And for some reason, I've always wanted Daniel Johnston to cover George Michael's song "Faith" - I'm certain that he would do a cover that would easily best the original.

  • @SonikTar77 Fair enough. I don't mean to discourage people from getting involved in music just because they might not be the best by someone else's standards. I like Daniel way better than all the people who make no music.

He might have trouble singing "Faith" unless he slows it down, but he'd do a great cover of "King of Pain."

  • @oldbluescott I think the "truly horrible singer" assessment would get few arguments - that is, as long as we're limiting the virtues of singing to being on pitch, having a nice timbre, tone, not having a quivering and cracking voice (like an adolescent boy). But I think that the simplicity and unpretentious honesty that so few adults are able to achieve is what makes Johnston's poor - technical - singing ability so easy to overlook, so easy to forgive and forget.

  • @SonikTar77 how dare you say hes a bad singer hes wonderful

  • What kind of instrument is he playing exactly?

  • daniel johnston, the flat duo jets and jandek the best hidden gems in music

  • ッ☆☆☆☆☆ッ

  • holy shit this is great

  • beautiful song!!

  • ....its true

  • Sounds like Jack White was heavily influenced by Johnston's singing.

  • This man is amazing. This isn't my favourite song of his, but it's still great. You can't teach someone musical genius, this guy has something special. You can hear it.

  • This man is such an inspiration. All those so-called "singer-songwriters" have something to learn from him

  • this sounds like the great Bob Dylan's early recordings in the early 60's

    i think both of them

its a shame that a lot of people don't get this two amazing artists

not the best voices in the world but very intense and expresive

    well written lyrics

    simple guitar/piano playing

sorry for my english i'm mexican

  • @LADYDEACON sorry, I agree both amazing musicians and song writers, but did you just say Dylan wasn't really well known?

Must say I love both Dylans and Daniel Johnstons honesty

  • @LADYDEACON lol you did better than me and good point

  • @LADYDEACON

me too associate Johnston with an early Dylan. i think daniel is perhaps the only one who can rivel dylan in terms of turn of phrase, and poetic structure of song. if someone said who do i think are the most talented songwriters alive today, i'd say Dylan and Daniel Johnston.

  • @LADYDEACON Your English is fine. Don't worry we understand :D

  • @LADYDEACON Yo igual soy Mexicano y me gusta Daniel Johnston :D!!

  • @johnny2366 I know! And I'm sure everyone else is just as impressed as I am! :)

  • @ArtieTheStrongestMan hahaha...you see?...the guy who bitched about arguing on youtube less than 1 day ago...is arguing on youtube....hahaha...you're one of those who believes everyone has a right to their opinion...as long as they agree with you...haha...go away kid...you're boring me

  • @johnny2366 shut up johnny you little bitch, ur a pussy and i hate you bitch

  • @johnny2366 Ouch. Outwitted! Oh johnny you never change! Love ya! Xoxoxo -mom

  • @ArtieTheStrongestMan haha..isnt a matter of outwitting ...I simply pointed out the obvious hypocrisy you displayed....and continue to display for that matter....pal

  • @johnny2366 lol. Check websters on your definitions of argue and hypocrisy there. Good luck with that awesome point of view of yours, pal.

  • @ArtieTheStrongestMan ...thanks for the wonderful advice...but all I need to do is look to your post for examples of both...there pal

  • @johnny2366 Well, it's really sad that I just came back to watch this video because of how much I enjoy the song, and can't find a decent recording of it to buy.... only to find that people like you actually take the time ARGUE over youtube comments about a fucking song for MONTHS. MONTHS! Maybe you should concentrate on that impressive "career" of yours and stop being such a miserable old curmudgeon.

  • @ArtieTheStrongestMan yeah yeah...look at the hypocrite...talking about people arguing on youtube...while arguing on youtube..haha....go away douche bag....if you'll notice that post was made by me long ago and I hadnt come back to this freak shows page since....until you decided to get on the soapbox and preach about shit you're doing yourself

  • 1:00 " in the dark" sounds so genuine..

    Breaks my little heart.

  • I love how the same people come on his video and preach about how he isn't a genius and isn't worth their time. If he wasn't... you wouldn't bother... Go away.

  • To all of the people fighting in this thread: just listen to the music. If you don't like it listen to something that you do enjoy. There is absolutely no point in arguing about whether or not an artist is worthy of critical acclaim and/or respect.

  • people are so cool.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheMrLahey hey everyone...look at the hypocrite...putting his 2 cents in..while complaining about everyone else doing it...

  • Not Top 10 charts? Regardless. A beautifull brave, honest, and timeless song full of heart. Awsome

  • alright my man, i have heard enough. i found out about him when my brother show'd me him songs. i looked up his lyrics and were blown away, thats why i love him. not because i feel bad for him, because i relate to him, and i am blown away by his music. so shut the fuck up. you have no idea why i like him, you think you know him, now you think you know me? you don't know shit except what you think. dont comment back please, or else you will just look desperate.

  • @yukonbros right...as opposed to you appearing regal....you're the hypocrite who talked shit about it wonder boy....there was no gun to your head demanding you reply to me was there?....or is the rule here that your opinion is to be posted ..and everyone who disagrees with you should be quiet?...what you have had enough of...or why your taste is so poor that this is considered by you as the work of a genius..or how you found out about him I couldnt care less about...so go away

  • @johnny2366 now your really sounding desperate, you posted your opinion on this video in the first place so dont go talking shit to me about that. just quit now man.

  • Can't you guys just agree that it's a matter of personal preference, and there is no way to unanimously determine that a "musician" or "artist" is good? It's just sound. Some appreciate certain sounds, and others don't.

  • @johnny2366 do you know him personally? are you friends with him? I doubt it. you have heard his music through your ears, and you have seen a movie about him with your eyes and thats it. you don't know anything about him. you think you understand who he is? you say you know all about him? you dont know shit my man. you can't know who somone is by fucking watching a movie about him, and listening to his music. don't pretend you have all the answere, you self-centered, insecure dumb ass

  • @johnny2366 THATS FUNNY. WHO WOULD YOU CONSIDER A GREAT SONGWRITER?

  • @johnny2366 dude, your hilarious. did you ever think that maybe he is not mispronouncing words, hes just making up his own. hes creating something, doing it his own way, like an artist. you should listen to his song the story of an artist, who knows maybe you'll learn something. so take your uptight ass somewhere else and stop acting like you have all the answers and know who is a genius and who's not.

  • @johnny2366 maybe if you actually listened this song before going around and pissing people off, than you might actually understand what I said. You didn't even listen to the song man, so don't act like you think you know what your talking about, dumb ass

  • @yukonbros actually, dumb ass...I have listened to it...its little more than a whack job hack who cant play....plain and simple...dumb ass

  • @johnny2366 if you listened to it, you would of understood what i meant earlier, don't be an idiot

  • maybe if you actually listened this song before going around and pissing people off, than you might actually understand what I said. You didn't even listen to the song man, so don't act like you think you know what your talking about. and please could grow a penis...

  • @johnny2366 why don't you do yourself a favor and become your own savior, and maybe grow a penis while your at it...

  • @johnny2366 post your music on the internet..then we can compare and see how pointless you are/in comparison of dj.

  • @Johnny????, u must be the most obnoxious basterd ever!! It's not the best song Ever but it's a pretty good song. This is art, he's speaking how he feels, Art is an expression!! Not whether u can play an instrument good or have the best voice!! That's all commercial steriotypes and that shows how smart

  • @johnny2366 You just aren't able to get past the poor vocals and weak guitar playing to realize that he wrote a great song. If someone else performed it you would be blown away. I've played guitar for 9 years so I can tell you first hand there's a lot more to songwriting than having good musicianship... Tons of the biggest artists of all time aren't very good at their instruments... if you want to hear some good musicianship go listen to yo yo ma.

  • Look, there's definitely something about him that's just off but man if you really listen to what he's doing... there's genius in it.

  • Drop your discretion,we're all the same!

  • Listen to what he's saying- get rid of yur hate before it consumes you- id say he's right on- danny just prefers to be natural- natural beauty folks, natural beauty- beauty, genuies or whatever the hell you wanna call it - cannot be taught- its complete humanity- stoparguing over his mental state and listen to what he's telling you- get rid of your hate

  • @johnny2366 Every fool with a guitar has the oppurtunity to try, and those with gifts, those with talents get heard. There are a lot of musicians with something wonderful to present who go largely unheard and you do have a point that his disability helped him to reach more ears but it didn't increase the beauty of his music. If his music was awful and all other factors were the same I would not be here talking with you about the artist merit of his music.

  • @johnny2366 When I'm listening to and enjoying his music it's not like in my mind im thinking "He's nuts this is so great how nuts he is!" I like it because I think it's wonderful music. If someone gave me these exact same songs without first telling me anything whatsoever about who he is or what has happeend in his life I would enjoy it just as much. The point I'm trying to make is that no "any fool with a guitar" obviously can't make music like this.

  • @johnny2366 Also the whole thing of me "disregarding real musicians", i may have been unclear. I enjoy a lot of music that is difficult on a technical level, And i applaud anyone that invest the time to learn the intricacies of an insturment. Technical talent isn't whole disregardable, it is to be praised in it's place, my point was that it is not a neccesity in every peice of music.

  • @johnny2366 There is a concrete definition of what music is. I don't think I defined it. I don't think people should go by my opinion of what is "good music" and what isn't. But the point is there IS a definition to what music is. For you to just flippantly disregard things you don't enjoy as "garbage" and artists you don't like as "hacks" is juvenile and ignorant.

  • @johnny2366 Now I understand that it isn't actually that you dislike him as much as you just have an idiotic and weak concept of what music is. I'm fine with you not liking it. I'm not fine with you disregarding it as noise. Whether or not something is music isn't defined by learned skill or "do i like this?" I hope you learned something here today.

  • @johnny2366 Your definition of what makes someone a musician is misinformed and ignorant. Technical talent means nothing. There are millions of people out there who can play complex guitar solos but only a small handful that have ANYONE that actually want to listen to them. Music is not about "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!" it's about beauty, it's about using the tools you have at hand to create something that touches another human being. So shut the fuck up.

  • @johnny2366 You can say "its three chords anyone can do it" all day long but thats kind of the point. You have the access to the same chords so let's see you write one song anywhere nearly as profound, intellegent and moving as his worst. Your a shallow fucking idiot, shut the fuck up.

  • im a a fifteen year old singer, and im just looking to be heard, if you would to actually take the time to listen to the song on my channel and comment, i would really appreciate it.

  • @yukonbros piss off, you are everywhere..we get it.

  • the notion that johnston is being lauded solely because of his mental illness is laughable. anyone who appreciates folk music realizes the genius of his work. he is a visionary and a creative giant. whether he could have been so prolific without his illness is, to me, a much more interesting question. i pity those who would trivialize his career. listen, just listen to his music. disregard the documentary. just listen.

  • He's awesome. They are real pro songs in disguise. If he was young and hot he would be a star.

  • @colljonathan Well said friend, this guy has great talent and the doc definitely shows that in some way, his drawings and music, I wont say genius cause it is used at nauseaum infinitum but he is certainly talented and anyone who denies that probably has never written a song in their life.

  • @colljonathan why I really like the documentary

  • @colljonathan I agree with you...I watched the documentary first and didn't really get the appeal. Then I went ahead and listened to the music. Every last tape. I was blown away, haven't felt like that since the first time i listened to Dylan. His music really makes sense to me.

  • @colljonathan bravo!

  • @colljonathan

he does have the whole 'wesley willis' appeal. which is a dual edged sword. it is the only reason i ever noticed him but once i looked at a couple videos i found some songs that werent him as of recent where he is all shakey voice and super overweight and deranged looking.. but after hearing some actual recordings and earlier recordings too i was blown away.

excellent and emotional writing, melody, and voice at times when he was younger.

  • @colljonathan THANK YOUU!!!

  • @colljonathan Disregard the doc? Seperate the artist from the art sure, but dont disregard a great documentary.

  • @johnny2366 not always true, i loved him before i found out he was mentally unstable. dont matter to some folks.

  • Danny J. What more can I say?

  • Lick my ass, shit stain.

  • COMPLETELY TRUE MUSIC

  • @johnny2366

Well alright, it probably was. But my point was no one really knew about it, except the people really close to him. He didn't rise up in the music scene as a mentally disabled folk singer, he rose up in the music scene as a folk singer.

  • @johnny2366

Daniel Johnston hit it big with the folkies in Austin Texas BEFORE his schizophrenia manifested itself, and anyone knew he had mental problems.

  • Johnny2366 is having some self esteem issues. :)

  • the other day this doc. was on, I saw an extremely disturbed individual..a tragic story I admit..but an artist?..hardly..that word is tossed around much too quick these days....5 year olds play and sing better than this...again,.very sad..but that doesnt make him a rock star..people need to listen to whats in front of them rather than basing their opinion on what curt cobain or other stars tell them is " art" ..this is little more than an unstable, developmentally disabled man with a guitar

  • hah, you are nothing more than an asshole. while his voice is not the textbook definition of beautiful, his lyrics are incredible and inspiring. you're entitled to your opinion, but perhaps insulting disabled geniuses is stooping a tad too low. you my friend, are pathetic.

  • @johnny2366 why not listen to the lyrics, all of the songs he plays.

i cant stand most nowaday singers, their music doesn't click but with his its just so pure simple and so good!!

  • johnny i too watched this for the first time the other day too. it was on the sundance channel.

he is quite disturbed, but i have found that his music; his lyrics especially are so simple and heartfelt i just couldn't ignore it

i suppose one could say that "artist" is a bit overused at times, but i see this man as an artists because what he has written and evoked has stirred emotion in me.

after all, art IS a subjective experience, is it not?

  • Nah, man. You're a developmentally disabled douche with a keyboard.

  • i love how hes pointing at you in the pic...love this guy..just discovered him today....saw his documentary..peace..

  • he kinda sounds like billy corgan or the flaming lips. he probably wouldve been big if he wouldve gotten a good band to back him up. i think that pretty much anyone that sings from the heart doesnt need a good voice to touch people. there are many singers outhere that i consider inferior and yet theyre huge, and there are others that are good singers but dont sing from the heart. but this guy is just as good as kurt cobain in my opinion. vocals arent that far off neither.

  • i'm new to this strange land ..I am welcoming myself into Daniel world!

    I like this place..He's captivating.

  • See the film----if you have not.

  • THat's no way to look at life Charlie Boy- Who gives a fuck- Go take a dump.

  • Did anyone tell Daniel he's pronouncing 'grievances' wrong? He say's 'gree-vee-ence'.

  • From a technical standpoint this song really has everything, verse, catchy chorus, bridge, and a pseudo reggae outro. Gotta love it

  • dont forget to forgive and forget... = PERFECT LYRICS

  • so he wrote all of his famous albums before he got a record label and became famous?

  • Love him.! Love the very unpolished, raw, amateur sound

  • @aitch3 -i find that the best singers usually sound unpolished, raw and amateur

  • @JudahIscariot absolutely!

  • Daniel is a way cool dude

  • do yourself a favor! become your own savior!

  • HI ! HOW ARE YOU ...

  • @coner - are userious how could u like one and not the other...u must be soime sortof dylan fanatic...ur lame.

  • squealing some bullshit lyrics? have you even listened to the song?

i guess you dont like Bob Dylan, either
