I loved this band back in the day! I also Love Green Day's version. I'm also old enough to have literally lived long enough to witness all the covers (in "real" time) of this song since the original. It's JUST A GREAT SONG!!!!! And F off to anyone who thinks they have a "right" to dictate to me what I should like or dislike. What's "acceptable" by some random standard........???????
I heard this song again when one of the bands on Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp performed the song. Great song and The Stray Cats did it justice. Why do so many people think this is the Clash's original song? This song was done a long, long time ago by The Crickets.
I just listened to the Vince Neil version of this song and had to find this one as fast as I could, kind of like when you bite into something rotten and have to grab a drink real fast to feel right again. I don't suggest anyone listen to that version.
Great guitar, standup bass, and a minimal drum kit propelled by intense energy. Screw the wannabes that need Auto-Tune vocals and a ton of production to record. If you really are a musician-this is how it is done.
the songs is a cover this is pretty close to how it was written the clash just rocked it out but this does it justice, green day is a tragic attempt to be cool. no one knew who they were till 1994 we were all looking to replace kurt. i did like a few early albums but now they just annoy me. great cowboy song though

@onemoretime101 there has always been 'manufactured' music! this is from the 80's for christ sake! the diference is that shit music from the past tends to be forgotten.
@rochebraziliano My friend, punk is not of the 60's, but of the 70's (unless you include Iggy Pop and the Stooges). This song is not so much a ballad as a ballad is a song that tells a story in short stanzas. This song is not punk in origin, it was written by Sonny Curtis, in... wait for it... THE GODDAM FIFTIES. Shut up my buddy.
@LiontimeACT have you ever heard of these bands MONKS, SONICS,SEEDS, OUTSIDERS,UGLY DUCKLINGS,MASTER APPRENTICIES? just to name a few of TRUE PUNK CREATORS.really that FOUGHT THE LAW was orinally written in 1959 but only it was a big hit with BOBBY FULLER FOUR in the 60s. Also you should know that IGGY POP and ALL PUNK bands only did rip off the sound from 60s GARAGE bands. At least i was not meaning ballad as a lower tempo music just i did mean that its has something from 50s POP music
I wrote a Setzer tribute song called This Kitten is Smitten. In it I reference 15 Setzer/Cats songs. I can't seem to put the url in as a comment, but here's the youtube extention youtube.com/watch?v=TJ3wMk8lQjQ
K Sonny Curtis and The Crickets did the "ORIGINAL" version, then the Bobby Fuller Four did a cover of it that was very successful (more successful then the original) then The Stray Cats and The Clash did a cover of it (idk who did it first) then Green Day did it.
if u like the song why dont u just listen 2 it ,to me i like the song of course i prefare my own choice but i have chosen to watch the cats sing it , i can turn off anytime and put someones elses version on if i choose which i will coz this isnt my thing ,but its real and defo good but coming on you tube F ing here + F ing there does no music fan anygood just have a good time and enjoy if not press esc ----- easy isnt it. cheers folks

I THINK I might have heard the Ramones cover it once??(Not sure, have drank a few beers since then,I am gonna check it out. :) I like hearing those kinda bands cover those old songs.Like the Sex Pistols used to.

@xgmb45 Correct. Sonny wrote the song and the original lyric was "Robbing people with a zip gun", but this was changed to "six gun" to make it more acceptable to AM radio. The Bobby Fuller Four recorded it with the original lyric on the Exeter label before recording their hit version for Mustang.
@problem49 Is that the real reason why they changed the lyric? The Crickets' original was a minor-charting single. I thought the change was something more trivial, like better flow, or just giving a more western feel.
@SlashManEXE No. Changing a one syllable word for another similar sounding one syllable word wouldn't affect the "flow" of the song at all. Evidently the programmers of AM radio back in the day simply decided that old murder weapons were more palatable than modern murder weapons.
Why do these wasted, out of shape, rock n' roll dissolutes always insist on taking their shirts off? Trust me, no one's interested in your scrawny naked physiques. I'd rather examine peeled shrimp at the deli.

@SuperFenderfan I hope you know that Setzer loved punk rock. But you are right. You didn't need to be great at guitar. It was all attitude. The guitar was their gun, it was a gun that wouldn't kill. Rockibilly is great, but I beleive punk is a more passionate genre.
@Evan42881 rockabilly is jus more different. every band in my highschool is either punk, preppy or metal. the shit gets old. i grew up on CASH, buddy holly, elvis, an the stray cats
@SuperFenderfan I see your point. I think that The Clash is the greatest band, but that's my opinion. But don't you think that Rockibilly has a punk mentality? And by metal bands, do you mean pop metal? because that stuff sucks. I'm into sabbath, metallica, that stuff, not pop.
@alterevox yeah the Crickets rock out man trust me, i'm a huge Boddy Holly fan but I think the Cats here beat em just a little bit especially with that great Gretsch G6120 that Brian uses and the Gretsch Drums that Jim uses.
Why did USA not love them as much as everyone else did. I am from USA (south Carolina even) and I love them so much. And have loved them for soooo long.
"The original was by 'Sonny Curtis & the Crickets.'" Ya, Sonny worked with the Crickets shortly after Buddy Holly's early demise. That's why Fought has such a good heavy Holly influence in it. I can easily imagine Buddy himself belting it out, Peggy Sue style.

Hmm, my two favorite 80s punk bands covered this song and I don't know which version is better. I got some serious thinking to do now.

@alterevox yeah the Crickets rock out man trust me, i'm a huge Boddy Holly fan but I think the Cats here beat em just a little bit especially with that great Gretsch G6120 that Brian uses and the Gretsch Drums that Jim uses.
