Klitsco beat Muhammad Ali?....Whoa there, pal...Ali at his prime 1966-67 form, would not only have beaten both the Klitsco brothers on the same night, but possibly at the very same time...
What did trainers train on in those days? I have just watched two Bodell videos and his defense in both was non existent. This is the type of fighter that goes into the ring and gets seriously hurt because they are flat out incompetent. Must have been hell for his family.
@emoran001...I can't help but laugh at your assertion that the -"top heavies today are the best of all time"- ...rather, they are the jokes of all time !!, and that includes the Klitsco brothers. Quarry would have disposed of them, and so would other European heavies like Karl Mildenburger, Jose Urtain, Ingmar Johanssen, Henry Cooper, Billy Walker, Johnny Prescott among others. Ali at his best would fight both the Klitsco Bros on the same night and beat them both.
I was a Quarry fan. He had some great wins. But, I have to say that not only would Klit beat Jerry, he would beat them all, including Ali, Fraiser, Etc. We don't want to admit that it's the time for the eastern Europeans to dominate the heavy division. Because of chauvinism we can't accept that having no really good American heavyies does not mean that the caliber of the top fighters today is not high. On the contrary, The top heavies today arethe best of all time. We need to get over that fact.
I say Quarry's the best white heavyweight since Marciano, and that includes both Klit brothers. His class is proven in the ring. He fought and beat men who would have hammered any two of the top heavies today on the same night.
So Bugner did better against Ali and Frazier so that means Bugner beats Quarry head to head. But if you consider Quarry's first fight with Frazier did Bugner really do better verses Frazier? However for argument's sake lets say that Bugner was more competitive with Frazier. now consider that both George Chuvalo and Oscar Bonevena did better verses Ali than Floyd Patterson did so Patterson should have lost to both of them but Patterson beat both of those figthers.
"Pawlie68," you're cup runs over with shit. Quarry would have slapped Bugner around like he was a baby, and left him in a fetal position sucking his thumb. Bugner wasn't even close to the class of Jerry Quarry.
Hey FlaviusConstantius, JuliusCeasarius, FuckMeUpTheYazooius. Your reverence of Bugner is like an allegiance to marble statues. Quarry did very well against Frazier and Ali in the first fights. Bugner stood like the statue of fuckin' David in his fights with Ali and Frazier. A matter of styles. Jerry would have ripped him on both sides of his rib cage and chopped him down like a tree.
Hey munchkin cocoa, your hyperinflation of Jerry Quarry's abilities, fine fighter though he was, is most entertaining.
Quarry stood toe to toe with Frazier and got pounded into oblivion. Twice. Bugner stood toe to toe and lost a close decision, even staggering Frazier harder than Quarry ever did. Ali beat Quarry easy twice. He named Bugner as one of his hardest opponents.
Chopped down like a tree? You mean like he did to Machen, Patterson, Ellis, Chuvalo, Norton?!
Quarry fought Ellis with a broken back and even then almost won the decision. Norton purposely fought Quarry when Jerry was a shot fighter, offering Quarry the fight on only 18 days notice. And even then Jerry staggered Norton twice and was doing very well until he was cut. Chuvalo is lucky since he was losing that fight abundantly and Jerry misread the referee's count. Jerry's own fault of course. And I'll give you Machen. Quarry looked bad in that one, having taken Machen too lightly.
All fighters have excuses and other unfortunate circumstances they can point to. Machen and Patterson were old. Shavers was kicked in the head by Mercante during the Quarry fight, which hardly helped his cause. Ali hadn't fought for 3 years. Frazier was half blind. Lyle had never fought outside the midwest before and froze on his Garden debut, and so on and so on.
@FlaviusConstantius: Who cares what other fighters did against common opponents? Ali lost to Frazier who was knocked out by Foreman who was knocked out by Ali...and so it goes. You know the old adage, "Styles make fights." Bugner was a tough guy and fought the best of the era, just like Quarry, but his skills were not at the same level as Jerry's, who was a terrific counter-puncher. IMO, Jerry would've given him a boxing lesson and won by UD in a lopsided decision. Easy call.
Dunno how it can be an easy call between two inconsistent fighters. For a start, a counter puncher needs something to counter. What's Quarry going to counter against a safety first guy like Bugner? Bugner is not Ron Lyle lumbering forward and getting picked off all night. He'd have all the physical advantages over Quarry, plus good hand and foot speed and a style Quarry probably wouldn't enjoy facing. That, and Quarry cuts. Pedigree favors Quarry but Bugner had the attributes to upset him.
@FlaviusConstantius: Well articulated reply, I'll give you that. Bugner was only safety-first against fellows whom he believed were capable of hurting him. He'd make the fight and go forward otherwise. And I think he'd do just that against Quarry, sticking that left out there all night--and connecting with it plenty. But he'd also get rocked w/left hooks to the body & head when Quarry slipped that jab. Inside or out, Jerry had him beat. And you know why? Cuz' he was much better.
Quarry was better than Ellis, Chuvalo and Norton and still lost to them. Being better doesn't guarantee a W. Bugner was safety first against a lot of guys. Not only would going to Quarry be a dumb strategy, but it'd be against all his defensive instincts. Methinks he'd let Quarry chase him, not his forte. In that type of fight either could nick it. BTW, Bugner stood up to Frazier's hooks and body blows, and Quarry wasn't Frazier. Maybe Quarry could draw Bugner into a war too, but I don't see it.
Bugner "would have dealt w/Quarry comfortably"? What, are you nuts? I realize you're entitled to your opinion but that's just plain ridiculous. Quarry was a terrific fighter. Bugner, at his best, was a good fighter. Pretty easy to figure out from there, dude.

Bodell could have survived the round if he had taken a count when his knee went down - he did not trip over his feet!

That lantern jaw was just too easy hit. Quarry, unlike Bodell was a class act.

Vic, Bodell was a lefty and could punch.
Bugner may have looked past him and got beat. Henry Cooper beat Bodell twice.
But he had some good second-tier wins.
Quarry basically retired him.

Yeah right, Bugner wouldn't have had a chance against Quarry. Quarry at that point was one of the five best heavyweights in the world.

Bodell was awful, but a peak Joe Bugner would have dealt with Quarry comfortably.
