@alisonsdragonfly .... Living an awful life, being raped, beaten, not wanted. Eventually you will kill yourself, and the whole world will go 'thank god!'. You are a whore like your mother. A SLUT. A bitch. Toot toot dragonfly, good bye, toot toot dragonfly, dont cry.
@alisonsdragonfly And who are you? Have you even read my comments. I dont even remember posting one here. Ive read all your comments, you nasty bitch. Your picture, it makes you look a slut. You ARE a slut. I feel sorry for you, you probably get molested by your own fathers drinking mates. Your fathers an alcaholic who beats you and only got married because your mother got pregnant at the age of 11. So you pretend to be all big on the internet, behind a mask of clearisil, but really you are....
A typical BBC Establishment take on the idea of a British (public) school life. My school didn't have a head porter or dressed like a ponce from the 19th century. My school was sandwiched between the railway marshalling yards, the abattoir and the carpet factory and my old man never rang the school to find out how I was as he was mining coal two miles across the canal.
When I was a kid our vicar said that the illustrator for Billy Bunter was in the congregation of the church. this impressed me no end. I think he referred to C H Chapman who illustrated comics and lived near- we were just north of Reading.
I remember there was a cartoon series made for the BBC in the 80's/90's, I think ,that was never shown as it was a political no-no in retrospect. Does anyone know of this series ?
Jesus! Im peeing my self laughing! Pollitically incorrect my arse! Its their own fault for getting fat, this teaches them that being a lazy fat arse is wrong.
So Bad! I thought this was rather poor when I saw it first time round, and it hasn't improved since! I think people must have been rather more easily amused in those days.
Do they still do dramas and series for kids today? On second thoughts having looked around I should think there are enough obese youngsters so Billy Bunter would be a little politically incorrrect. Maybe in a revamped series, Billy would be given a gastric by-pass.
BTW this music appears on Tubular Bells, doesn't it?
Despite being a yet-to-mature working-class oik in the 50's (I still am) I loved the Billy Bunter books.
Am I deficient in sensitivity because I am not scarred by the experience of being exposed to this programme which does not fully reflect the full diversity of society?
All of the experiences portrayed may not have been universal, but most were. of course, public-school buggery was NOT portrayed, nowadays a sensitive poofter character would be mandatory-- Uuuuugh!
Surely the whole point of a video like this is the window it provides to look into a vanished world, i.e., Britain in the 1950's. I was a child in that world and I remember it fondly today. No, it certainly wasn't perfect, but I believe it was a gentler, kinder world (after the horrors of two World Wars, admittedly) and children were allowed to be children. Today, they are taught to be "mini adults" from too early an age. Thanks for posting.
Oh Crikey! The days when fat was fat and non-pc didn't exist and a long distance telephone call was somewhere out of county! In this case 20 miles away at Folkestone! Did I really find this funny? All I can say is - we were easily pleased in those days! And this was the view we were given of Public Schools, which survives today! Casting imitation pearls before real swine! Oh give me Mr Pastry and Harry Worth!
I must say that it was a lot funnier when I was 7, although watching the clip does score in the nostalgia department. And certainly there were as many--if not more--regional accents in the 1950's, but surely the idea was to broadcast clearly to all, rather than obscure through dialect.
Gerald Campion alias billy bunter was born in 1921 lol this bloody clown was 35 when this episode went on air, and 40 years old when the last billy bunter episode went out in 1961.... o lore,
selection 1979 misses the point of the role entirely. Bunter was always the unlikely hero who uses his portliness as a brilliant lead-swinging ploy - with only one end in view - the acquisition of food.
OMG. Things hadn`t changed much in the 60`s @ "Proper" schools..Like what I had the misfortune to go to. There was smog...in the Chemistry Lab, anyway. The Master used to chainsmoke Player`s Navy Cut ciggies in the store cupboard during the lesson. and we used to pour acid an other chemicals down the sinks . Can you imagine a class of 14 year olds left alone with bottles of Concentrated Nitric, and Sulphuric acid (on the benches) Nowadays ?! and a Kipps apparatus in the corner of the lab.
Hahahahaha!!!! Seems that you carbon copied me, or i you !! Any way, i had the same chain smoker as you and some very bad mistakes in the chem labo. Bottle yz sayest ! The only bottle i raelly remember is the milk bottle with the cream floating on top at the 15 minte braek ar 10.30... i used to love that creamy milk !
er.....yes the quality was far more inferior in those days - but you also have to remember., these are probably really bad quality kinescope recordings that have been copied 4 or 5 times to be posted here on youtube.
Its original broadcast looked much better than this
@neil997 Thanks, I would never have thought that. I actually heard it on the series as far back as the 1950's and often wondered what it was! As it happens, Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of my favourites, as are his other famous compositions, Greensleeves and The Lark Ascending.
This was funny and educational but doesn't this just show how the native English language has taken a change for the worse? Why can't people speak like that these days? I know this was the 50's. I am not sure if you have seen this but notice they all have side partings and they say "fellows, oh law, beast, jolly good, well i say really, etc...They never say "yeah," "innit or bruv, mate. Listen to Quelch the master - his accent is simply divine.
his accent is simply divine.god u r a loony tune..
they all have side partings?this was far from
a true reflection of life in those times, and why would anyone want to speak like that..also note that the humour is based on bullying someone who is overweight..its about has funny as a major road traffic accident.people did not speak like this in the 50s in england..everyone had their own regional accent just has they do nowadays .

Billy Bunter classic role model for all politicans the 3 lying strategy:
1. Outright Denial ... it wasnt me.
2. Blame others ... he made me do it.
3. Your fault ... you shouldnt have left them lying around.
Classic.

Takes me back to being a 12 year old!!!
Back in 1956 we had a pye 10inch black and white tv set that took about 5 mins to warm up after being switched on.
We only had the tv set on loan due to my dad being a tv repair man, back then less than half the kids in my school class even had a tv at home

The slang was taken from Stalky and Co so was out of date when the Magnet started in 1908! But yes, there are alot of debased dialects around now.
