This scene just destroyed me emotionally the 1st time I watched it. 2nd time was with my wife(she's Colombian) and I tried to explain to her how great the United States was once. I honestly felt like slicing my own throat when trying to explain the beauty/bounty of the American Mid-West. What the hell happened to OUR DREAM, man...?
the best scene ever, am i right? esp. when the camera freezes in the sky and looks down again a few seconds later. those seconds encompass everything: generosity, high spirits, tenderness. one of my very favorite films.
Yes, I agree: the idea of humanity permeates this movie.
With all due respect: finally a Lynch film with valuable insights about real people and relationships. Richard Farnsworth really had that quality in his performances, including as the "The Grey Fox." And I also really like how Lynch tilts up and down slowly to show the slowness and the long road. I always thought he was being warmly humorous there.
How to express slowness and distence ?...distorting the process of the ellipsis. The camera goes up, remains still for a moment face to the clouds (normaly it should be now that the scene ends and that we have the ellipsis). Then the camera goes down slowly until we discover the old man just a fews meters farer. Masterpiece !
I just watched this movie again on FX channel. In one split second Alvy's lawnmower magically changes from a red piece of crap to a brand new green John Deer. Pure cable TV magic!
Oh I know Alvin's mower broke down and then he bought a John Deer. But the FX channel cut out that whole segment from the movie. Red lawnmower before commercial break, John Deer after commercial break. Sigh!
The beauty of simplicity. The beauty of sweet sounds and just plain humanity. The beauty of country roads. This movie just reaches you. It makes you feel..human..and good. And simple. Good work Lynch and Badalamenti. You are true artists.
dubbing should be banned. i cannot for the life of me see why anyone would ever want to watch a movie other than in its original language. i don't care what you say, i think dubbing robs a movie of its original atmosphere and makes it sound like a second rate highschool play.
i like to think that i would be able to tell if it was dubbed, if that's what you're saying. also i think it's true about any language, so even if a movie is dubbed in english that would still take away some of its personality and genuine feel. but i guess you're entitled to your opinion, even if you don't know what you're talking about.
I do know what i'm talking about. don't tell me. You're an expert on movie dubbing? I'm just saying it's a rather huge statement. What about movies in english? The english language isn't so beautiful as others. And what if you don't speak english and live in america? You should have to be reading subtitles for every single thing and not be able to understand anything that is in english. dubbing is important.
I fully agree, julianppp. I watch a film in its original language and utilize English subtitles, although I feel that subtitles take a little from the visual aspect...but the visual sacrifice is worth hearing the film as it should be. Same goes for anime, I despise English dubbing in anime.
Mitico Alvin, dovremmo fare tutti come lui, perseverare
oh I love this song, I can hear it a whole hour eheh it's so beautiful and the film as well, very beautiful! I only always wonder why they dub the films... I really prefer hearing the original movie with subs, otherwise the mouth is always wrong :S in Belgium they don't do it, that's soo much better xD
Yes maybe you're right, a original language movie it's better but expecially in Italy people who can understand English are rare, and watching a movie with subs it's quite "disturbing". Fortunally Italian dub teams are quite good: it's rare to notice the problem of the mouth! In other countries the dub it's not so good, I watched some french dubs and they are not so good... However, I agree, this song is awesome! I'm looking forward to see the movie! I already know it'll be fantastic...
I don't know what it is about this piece in the film but, I'm a 41 year old grown man and i get tears in my eyes when I watch this. I love this movie.
Thank you for comment. It certainly struck a chord with me. As far as that segment in the movie goes, I think it's a combination of the photograhy and the music. And I do admire the man's determination.
there is no denying there. Badalamenti and Lynch have always been superb together from Blue Velvet to Twin Peaks to this. i also wrote a comment for 'the straight story (1999)- reprise'. if you like, you can read it. it pretty said what you just said. cheers. thank you for having the same feelings as i do about this movie.
this film touches me so much that every time I listened to this song I just cry cry and cry...with happiness...there is so much to live in this fucking life.
I live in Laurens, Iowa and I just want to say that we do not have a pack of stray dogs running wild through town lol

I just can't believe that you're living in Laurens. Why? Cause you're writing about absence of dogs in the streets. Dogs are everywhere :)

questo film è come un'oasi nel deserto.
la stupenda colonna sonora sembra seguire il ritmo lento e riflessivo dell'incedere di quel vecchio tagliaerba.

A really beautiful song... But I must confess, it doesn't make me cry: I feel a deep, sheer feeling of peace with the nature.
I simply feel good... This song has no spoken part, it's only music, but can communicate better than a billion words!!! It's fantastic.
