I was lucky enough to see the Clash play the 83 US Festival, Micks last show.I was 16 or 17. When the Clash ll played in the bay area in 84, I saw them play+got to ask Joe a question during a radio interview. I sounded like a dumb nervous kid, but I managed to sneak in a couple extra questions about Mick. I was so nervous I couldn't remember how to speak! Almost. The interview was pretty entertaining and full of 'Joe-isms'.It was on the '94.9 Quake' in S.F. I think I have it on a drive somewhere.
Fuck Cusack+Depp! Who the fuck cares what some hollywood douchebags have 2 say. Is their opinion any more valid or interesting than the average Clash Fan-atic? Of course not! It pains me greatly to see these movie-star A-holes even mentioning my favorite band. They can have U2 and the rest. I could care less. The Clash belonged to the fans, and they knew it. There was never a band that treated the fans so well. They knew we're all just average Joes!
@mikentosh your words ring true my friend,,,,,,great comment,,i also am afflicted with CLASHISM,,,,luv em to this day,and very proud of what they achieved,,,not just musically but,,the feeling of pride they installed in you....still miss them
I dont think Joe Strummer would in the end like his face tatooed on someone's flesh. That's just me but I think he would prefer you to pick up a guitar. Write a cartoon or create something that has a sense of the iconoclast that he was.
@leannewoodfull I like it! I wouldn't if he were still alive. But now Joe's gone forever, it's a great sign of respect+love, that most people just won't 'get'...Joe was the coolest. In 1989 I got a Clash tattoo with the Clash written inside a star, in front of a circle, with stripes out the sides...like the t-shirt joe wore in the 'Radio Clash' video. Of course the dude fucked it up and the lines aren't straight. I should've gotten the Clash written in the 'font' from the first album...Clash!
Feck yes. I only recently got Temple's film and have watched all of the special features (about 60 interviews) as well as multiple viewings of the film. Incredibly heartfelt.
Skindiving - how does that end up becoming the opposite?? I always saw what Bono has done in Africa more recently at least as a positive example that hopefully other people might follow. Do you mean as his influence being unfair or advantageous to people who might not do this otherwise?
mmm, he wasn't "friends" with bono. i think they met once or were going to meet? not friends if that is how you mean it. i like the other folks back from his pre-clash days, but not sure if he was great friends with the actors. throwing them in was gratuitous to a fault. average fans recollections would have meant so much more to the film, and to joe. jim jarmusch was a friend - that made sense.
Yea I can try to apologize for that as an American... but in any case think of it as a compliment - we don't have anything that's very comparable to the BBS here but we really really need something INTELLIGENT broadcasted!!! Our kids are losing brain cells over on this side of the pond because of our media!!
why critisise the likes of depp, cusack and others for talking about joe,we dont own him,joe was a man of people,so why cant people no matter who they are talk of the prophet that is joe strummer....i agree with comment about bono,i worked as road crew for various irish bands,u2 amongst others long before the world heard of them, any bandwagon bono we used to call him...keep joe alive in your hearts and your childrens hearts
Of course he does hes good deeds and all, takes advantage from his visibility to make something right, but from one point further, it becomes the opposite.
I just would like him to keep singing or shut up.
And about Strummer, hell, I had 6 years when they ended and grown up remembering the clash tunes.
So yeah, I give him every credit for having done what he did with his short time on "the rock".
an excellent film maker is Mr Temple.Just saw a screening of a new film he has made on Madness.Very very good.Says he wants to do a film on The Kinks next.Cool
Julian Temple came to the Duke of York cinema in Brighton and someone from the audience asked the same question. Temple basically shrugged his shoulders and said Paul Simonon wasn't available. Got the feeling that Temple regarded this as a bit of a riposte.
Have to say also that I didn't like Temple; I asked him question about Joe and he clearly did not know the answer but kind of didn't want to admit it.
according to what ive read they neva gt round to it, julien was going to meet paul but then something personal came up in paul's life and they cwdnt do it. in all my documentaries on the clash paul is only actualy in 1, strange really. R.I.P Joe-ill have spliff 4 u!
there is tons of footage and movies about Joe witht eh Clash, the best thing about this was it was mostly about Joe OUTSIDE the Clash ... thus, all the conncetions with actors he worked with. I tohught it was a great look into Joe's true personality.
What I don't understand and I just don't get, Is why John Cusack is there, damn, and Johnny Depp, Saw the docu and thought, 'What?' This seems to be really wrong, Where is Ari up as well as Paul Simonon, I have to add my commentary, I don't feel this is a real documentary, Where a critic were to say so then I'd say, 'I'm feeling contrary', No, I'm not sorry, I was moved I had to gripe, If you're gonna do this, then you should have done it right!!!!

Elvis Presley never needed them. Disregarding Scotty Moore, one of the most influencial guitarists of all time. There were solos in Elvis songs.

I'm 17 years old and I can honestly say I idolize Joe more than any celebrity/musician these days. He was truely gold.

Strummer worked with Cusack on "Gross Pointe Blanc" I think that's the link. Cusack shares some of the tatses of his character in that film.
