I just saw this series and was amazed. The acting and writing was great and the characters seemed real. I liked Howarth for his dry take on life and appreciated that the writers took half an episode to show a character dealing with the death of a spouse. My mother doesn't like shows shot on video because of the visual quality. That means that she misses greatness like To Serve Them All My Days, Flambards, and I, Claudius.
I watched this with my children when it was broadcast on Masterpiece Theatre years ago. My children were 10 and 13
and never forgot the series. I recently rented it from netflix and it was just as excellent as I first remembered it. I've read most of Delderfield's books and this is one of the best.
A wonderful series.

This is tremendous. I saw it as a young man in my early 20s. I own the DVD of the series today.
It's fantastic. David Powlett-Jones has really changed my life, funny to say that.
