Unblieveable TOTP moment. I wished someone had a time machine so that I could back to 1973-74 and nail one of Pan's People ('Do You Wanna Dance' takes on another meaning). Hell, I wanted them to sleep in my bed wearing those leotards they're wearing-because they would be exhuasted.
Why do Pan's people have red blotches on their left buttocks (Their leotards, that is)? Was it to mark Remembrance Day? This edition went out in November.
The way that Pan's People are appearing to be pretending to punch someone during that dance routine could make a hard of hearing person believe that this song is actually called "Do You Wanna Fight".
Yes, Robin, Gary Glitter is persona non grata for obvious reasons. Radio 2's Pick of the Pops never features charts where Glitter is in the Top 20. Someone did tell me online that re runs of TOTP shown abroad edit out any mention to him. However, Barry Blue does sound a bit like Gary Glitter.
Actually, it does feature charts where he is in the Top 20 - there are too many of those to discard them altogether - it just never plays him, even when he was at number 2. The rerun you're referring to is, in fact, the German transmission of TOTP which this recording is from, which edited out "I Love You Love Me Love" at number one.
This makes things tricky between 1972 and 1975 but I can understand the uproar if a Glitter song was played. However, it is sad for the Glitter Band, who split from their lead singer and used to play their own hits when on tour, who can't get gigs due to their connection.
He was only number one for nine weeks in all, and those are pretty much the only weeks they'd never feature - they've skipped new entries and high climbers by GG in a way they'd never do for (almost) anyone else.
a propos your earlier point, I can certainly imagine people hearing this at the time and thinking "do you wanna dance" was a rather lame copy of "do you wanna be in my gang". Someone I know once quoted BB's "School Love" quite movingly and even politically (no, really, he did!).
Barry Blue was a kind of hanger on to the glam scene and not taken that seriously by glam fans. He interestingly had many of his hits written by Lynsey de Paul, whose solo work was of a higher standard, and played on Sugar Me.
And now.. the news headlines..

Unforgettable times for TOTPs, when pop music, really was pop music.
Very happy-go-lucky times compared to nowadays.
Look at the young people in the background, they look so innocent compared to nowadays...

The number one single on this show has, of course, been written out of history.
