It turns out that Carmen does! :) He is indeed amazing, I have not heard a better pianissimo in messa di voce!!! Di Stefano had something similar, but not as full and meaty as Kaufman... Great, great interpretation!!!
He`s got a great voice and great timing... acting could be worked on... having said that, he's in the next generation of great singers.... and this is one of my all time favorite arias and he does it so well... congrats Jonas!!!
that's strange how people would like to hide smth by pretty smile... Kaufmann is worthy of not to be compaired, but just to be the name among others...
Marvellous interpretation...and what a voice. I'm a Canadian heroique tenor and I believe sincerely that, he's putting the table for the next dramatic tenor generation.
OK. He's got the suffering down pat. But where's the love? He's singing I love you but he's barely even looked at her, preferring to sing to the far distance or that stupid flower.
Kaufmann performs here almost exactly my interpretation. The aria can be the first foreshadowing that he will prove to be not in love with Carmen, but dangerously obsessed with an imaginary ideal. I think he has spent his whole prison term seeing her face on the flower, and continues to when he sees it crushed. It also ties in the fate theme. Carmen sees her destiny in the card scene, and we see Jose's here. I always did it (at least dramatically) almost exactly as Kaufmann does. Cheers.

@maxhansendk weak and thin can never be used to describe Kaufmann's voice. A dark sound for a first tenor yes, but at the same time agile, rich, round and capable. Kaufmann has mastered his instrument showing a wonderful understanding of what it can do and controlling it with such finesse so that he can deliver quality sound.
Different YES. Not for everyone YES. weak and thin? never
@khamikins Kaufmanns voice sounds weak and thin when you have spent decades listening to tenors from the past. From Caruso and onwards...
He is a good tenor by todays (low standard). But if you have experienced live performances by Gigli, Bjorling, di Stefano, Corelli or Lemeshev...To mention a few. It is obvious we have left "The Golden Era" of tenors. Modern tenors are way, way behind. And they will never catch up.
Villazon is a good example! - His singing is an absolut disaster!
@maxhansendk so weak to remove your account. anyway, i was going to check your age, because you shouldn't try to make us believe you've heard all those tenors live, if you're only 17 yrs of age, which you probably are. as i said: so weak! and thin too.
@maxhansendk What are you talking about? If by "old school tenor" you mean lyric tenor, no, he's not. He's a heldentenor whose technique is excellent. I'd also say that "weak and thin" are the complete opposite of what his voice actually is. You need to see him live.
@BorisGodunov There's plenty enough of tenor in that voice! The only problem I have with him as Jose is that it's harder to understand Carmen giving him up!
Fantastic singing! the high note full voice transistioned to falsetto was really flawless! The ending sobs were a bit much (Don José already takes the wrap for being a wimp in some circles, lol) but the entire performance of this aria was one of the best I've ever seen. Bravo!
great technique /is not easy for this type of voice to sing as musically as he does here/he has a great ,great talent and he always cares about music ...bravisimo !
Wow. Just wow. The diminuendo on the B flat was unexpected, emotionally powerful, and extremely difficult to pull off. Bravo. With his baritonal timbre he's a more manly alternative to Escamillo, who usually just blows away Don Jose in that category.
@MrValentinus Absolutely. I just watched the Met Live broadcast of Carmen (with the goddess Elina Garanca!) and was wishing the entire time that Jonas was singing....
This young man is a terrific tenor: a strong, resonant voice, great emotion, and terrific stage presence. Whoever we like best... mine will always be Caruso, and Bjoerling for this one, but bravo, Mr. Kaufman: Don Jose thrives in your wonderful artistry.
What you wrote is exactly my opinion abut him. in some ways he reminds me of the younger Domingo.I now saw him three times on stage, and every time he was absolutely convincing.
Unfortunately there are better versions of this song on youtube. Sad. But anyway, I am not a fan of his voice.
Remembers me that I had to pay a huge entry for a performance of Tosca which I only wanted to see beause of Ruggero Raimondi - I had to pay such a high price for the ticket just because of him. And he wasn't a good Cavaradossi. Acceptable, but not good. He will never be comparable to great tenors.
But that is just my opinion, everyone experiences a voice in another way.
Too many bigots put their comments in these places. I have been listening to and thoroughly enjoying great tenor voices for over 60 years,,,and they don't come any richer than this man. Thanks for posting this.
to Classicvideofan I attended his concert in the Athens Concert Hall with a symphonic orchestra accompaning and I could very clearly hear him which means that either the theatre to which you refer has some problem with sound accoustics or with respect you have a hearing problem.
Like Corelli in timbre. "Odd" tenor sounds to me. So much baritone quality in them. I prefer Domingo and Carreras' tenor timbre, but that does NOT diminish the beauty of Corelli and Kaufmann. Interestingly Corelli in Cilea's
Il Lamento di Federico goes for the high
C. So this is a new timbre era for tenors I guess. Carmen's acting here sucks. What is it with MOST Carmens in this scene? They should be acting cold, hostile - NOT removed even is there isn't singing. AGNES BALTSA is SUPREMO!!

btsg: I heard him live, he sounded very throaty, people next to me wondered if he had a cold (but that wasn´t the fact, on this occasion he stepped in for another tenor who had a cold). Anyway, I´ll give him another try in october, hope he will sound better then.
He sounds like Dimitri Hvorostovsky. But... is the baritone not supposed to be Escamillo? But this is Don José... I am confused... I think I need food.
Completely agree. Dark tenor as for long time i haven't heard. Perfect for Verdian and Italian veristic operas roles like Canio, Manrico and obviously Radames. I like him less in romantic roles like Rodolfo in Boheme: Puccini requires more delicate timbro. Great technique and talent, anyway.
just wonderful. nice to hear the dramatic sound it was written for. and i, incidentally, adore Anna Netrebko. but anyway, i think this was beautifully performed. passionate and rich.
maxhandsendk: why do you compare? Why should JK sound like Jussi Bjorling? Bjorling died 50 years ago, when you like him better, enjoy, listen to him, don´t force yourself into listening to young artists. But I still don´t understand: why should anyone sound like anyone else?
I do not think that his approach to the voice is ideal or in line with bel canto tradition, or a good model of healthy vocalism...BUT his artistry here is absolutely undeniable. So touching.
anyone who would say this is not a moving dramatic performance is obviously not a noteworthy opera critic. the role is written for a dramatic sound in the second half. artistry, yes, prowess, not necessarily. but not meant to be discarded as a beautiful performance. and the acting is better than MANY of the greats, regardless of the sound.
THAT was a commentary that was exactly right. "Sounds like Warren singing tenor". Is this the 'worlds greatest opera singer'? Poor opera...Villazon, Cura, Netrebko, and now this.
I understand your sentiment but the circumstances before he sings this are of him being in prison and being torn between this bewitching woman that he knows is bad for him and Micaela whom his mother wants him to marry and who is pure and who would love him where Carmen doesn't. The staging of this particular scene can be one of intense personal torment and that's what appears to be done here by the stage director. His performance is flawless esp with the emotion expressed.
muchas gracias, argentino tenor inteligente.
I preferred his younger voice. Although his younger voice had some things to learn, it was not a throaty sound. To all of the fans, forgive me... I will agree that his voice is fantastic, but it used to soar throughout the entire compass. Now, it only has its vibrant youth in the passagio and up, but only with force.
It seems that many posters here are used to tight, bright, white and light tenors. This guy has a full, rich and ringing sound. It is in the same style as the greats of 50 years ago. He is first class, in my opinion.
Jonas, sos increible.

His voice sounds very thin and weak despite aided by modern technique.
Not bad, but his singing does not belong to tenors with more "naturally fiery" voices.
You just have to listen to one of the "old school" tenors to understand how bland this sounds. Ok, but no more.

Sounds awful compared to Jussi Bjorling.
maxhansendk 2 years ago
maxhandsendk: why do you compare? Why should JK sound like Jussi Bjorling? Bjorling died 50 years ago, when you like him better, enjoy, listen to him, don´t force yourself into listening to young artists. But I still don´t understand: why should anyone sound like anyone else?
leonore0210 2 years ago 3
I do not think that his approach to the voice is ideal or in line with bel canto tradition, or a good model of healthy vocalism...BUT his artistry here is absolutely undeniable. So touching.

The ideal Don Jose, I think. Looks, voice, acting - the archetypal latin male, although he is German.

Rodrigo
romalisan 2 years ago
anyone who would say this is not a moving dramatic performance is obviously not a noteworthy opera critic. the role is written for a dramatic sound in the second half. artistry, yes, prowess, not necessarily. but not meant to be discarded as a beautiful performance. and the acting is better than MANY of the greats, regardless of the sound.

THAT was a commentary that was exactly right. "Sounds like Warren singing tenor". Is this the 'worlds greatest opera singer'? Poor opera...Villazon, Cura, Netrebko, and now this.

If the theme of the song is that love is painful, this singer has communicated eighty percent of the pain to his audience.
ss0099218 2 years ago
I understand your sentiment but the circumstances before he sings this are of him being in prison and being torn between this bewitching woman that he knows is bad for him and Micaela whom his mother wants him to marry and who is pure and who would love him where Carmen doesn't. The staging of this particular scene can be one of intense personal torment and that's what appears to be done here by the stage director. His performance is flawless esp with the emotion expressed.

muchas gracias, argentino tenor inteligente.

And he is also a very good actor

I thought that the first thing a tenor has to have is voice...
Aetion 3 years ago
I preferred his younger voice. Although his younger voice had some things to learn, it was not a throaty sound. To all of the fans, forgive me... I will agree that his voice is fantastic, but it used to soar throughout the entire compass. Now, it only has its vibrant youth in the passagio and up, but only with force.

It seems that many posters here are used to tight, bright, white and light tenors. This guy has a full, rich and ringing sound. It is in the same style as the greats of 50 years ago. He is first class, in my opinion.

mezereum 3 years ago
