I loved this show, its theme, stories and actors as an adolescent...this brings back much nostalgia... I wish they could either rerun or remake it. It was like route 66, almost lyrical in it's scripts. thank you for this bit of my past!!!
How it effectively works on the bass line instruments, in their rythms and notes (maybe only by horns and strings)! They almost blow away main/motif melody line.
This is obviously one of the best works by Nelson Riddle.
@radiocommander Actually, it was David Raksin who composed this theme song. I wonder if this is what inspired Jack Urbont's "Autumn Breeze" for General Hospital. The urgent backbeat fits well for a classic medical drama.
Seriously, the best theme a TV show ever had. Overkill in fact. As someone once put it, its akin to hiring Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of Woolworth's.
Heavens to Dr Zorba! What a nifty song! Never heard of it before now; I used to watch syndicated reruns of "Ben Casey" back in the early 70's. (I'm too young to remember it's original run in the early 60's). Fell in love with the theme song right away! Powerful & soul-stirring. It was a very intelligent show for it's time; I can well understand why it was such a hit. THANKS for sharing this treasure of a tune with us! :)
How interesting -- I never noticed this before. I was a teenager during this time, and I always liked Ben Casey better than Dr Kildare (against popular opinion at school) -- there is something about this theme that resembles the western themes of a few years earlier: less romantic, more pioneering and restless. Almost like a gentler version of the Magnificent Seven theme. And of course more like Ben Casey himself. (Wasn't he suppose to be an ex-boxer, or am I remembering that wrong?)
@manthasagittarius vince was an ex lifegaurd in real life i dont remmeber if he was a boxer in the series in the return of ben casey he said something about putting people back together in vietnam to go back to war and be destroyed
Ben Casey was my first crush for a movie star. I loved him ever since. Some of the girls were the Dr. Kildare fans but for me, it was always Dr. Ben Casey.
Man, I have this record and loved it on the Casey show. The melody is synched at the intro with a gurney crashing through the doors of a hospital hallway.
The time signature makes this a hard melody to play for amateurs. Great, great composition, melody, and orchestral arrangement behind the piano.
Love good TV themes including the ancient 'Man and the Challenge', Navy Log, Science Fiction Theater, X-files, but Ben Casey tops 'em all. Hypnotic, compelling, rhythmic, dramatic....way cool.
Doctor zorba used to slur his letter s dr. caseshe dr.caseshe the narator after dr. zorba was fred foy who did the lone ranger and the dick cavett show, also the trailer for dr. zhivago .
You've got it. I'll start working on my top ten list of classic TV Tunes. Let's contact each other in a few days. I have to make my homework. It's going to be fun.

Beautiful music, makes me remember my childhood when Doctors cured people´s body but also mind and spirit .
Would you be so kind to upload Doctor´s
Kildare theme which is on the other side of the record? Thank you.

Sorry to say that I don't have the other side, but I thank you very much for your comment.

Do you know where this Valjean theme music can be purchased today? I didn't see it on iTunes, but perhaps it is on some other site. Any ideas?
bellwood1000 1 year ago
@bellwood1000 It's on a CD compilation called "Hey Look What I Found". I forget the volume number as there are at least 12 in the series.

I loved this song....It has arrangement complexities similar to Burt Bacharach! Thanks for the stroll down Memory Lane with Dr. Casey and yourself.

You're welcome. Yes, this is a rather complex and unusual instrumental theme.

Dave raksin wrote it in an odd time signature like take 5 by dave brubeck ,the sheet music has a picture of vince edwards .

Yes, the music seems to be written in 5/4. Quite original!
