Maybe John C. Wright doesn't know about demonstration of God existence but if some one is open mind and want's to read it, it's in: newadvent . org / summa / 1002 . htm (without spaces).
Not all people are open mind, I think some one can be or not atheist, protestant or anglican, of catholicism or judaism, philosopher or liar, that uses reason or not, but I think I don't have permission to attack him, if not I'm a bad person, maybe is only about it, only bad people attack's other because they think different.
I think, that's why I'm not only an animal, maybe other's doesn't practice this virtue.
I think open mind is the way, not being a closed mind person. I like he's testimony
I understand that the long distance and nationality of not Latin countries make's some people hate catholic's like they hated Indian's in Gandhi's age's. In Gandhi's word's, a bigot person is the one that behave's with bigotry. I understand that barbarian's where not catholic also. But I think, the same I don't discriminate Gandhi for being an Indian, Luther for being of other religion, etc. We should all do the same. I hope people not attack other's for thinking in another way or different.
moral groundwork? answer the questions i had? philosophy? answers to life's deep questions? did everything an atheist was supposed to do? wtf? hatred of christianity? hated enemies? if you're an atheist asking who made the universe, you're not an atheist roflmfao. being atheist means only one thing. you don't believe in any gods. it has nothing to do with philosophies, life's 'deep questions', moral groundwork, etc
oh, and one more thing... you don't pray to what you don't believe in
@leptismagna10 I was thinking the same thing. This guy was looking for answers he hadn't yet found and happenned to have a life-altering experiences that twisted his worldview. God doesn't follow from that.
@misterzonker2584 I always found the "questions" people have that they find answers to by adopting a religion to be very shallow questions in the first place.
They're the kind of questions that are better answered by fortune cookies.
@leptismagna10 Go check out his livejournal. He writes in a style that suggests a 40-year-old virgin with a BA in Philosophy and Star Trek bedsheets. He's weirdly obsessed with making sure no one has a sex life that doesn't meet his approval. He refers to homosexuality as a "sexual deformity" and thinks it's "perfectly logical" that women receive less pay for the same work as men. Nothing but a clueless, pretentious, mean-spirited nerd.
That was painful to watch. What would happen to this guy if he decided he wanted Aliens to be real and was given LSD?
I understand all faith is a result of taking subjective evidence as absolute, and giving in to fear of uncertainty, but a rational person understands that basing life decisions on whim is highly irrational.
The whole 'integrity as a philosopher" line pretty much sealed the deal. He was a staunch libertarian, an ideology based on assertions rather than empiricism.
Its always like that when an atheist converts to Jesus ,the other atheists claim that he was never an atheist because they cannot bear the fact that one of them left the unrational atheist thinkers
I disagree. There are some very well known philosophers who can and do argue that God has to exist by way of the ontological or something similar. Just because one can erect an argument against their argument doesn't make it false, but it is interesting that such an argument can be achieved. The Ontological in its most powerful form is not easy to refute as evidenced by the people trying to refute it with different arguments and not agreeing on which is best.
@pachecosita In the absense of a God.... what are our chances of being able to trust the logical and reasonable conclusions that our mind comes to?
I'm not saying you're wrong; but that comment got me thinking.
Our mind can actually apprehend concepts beyond itself (ideas), but on an atheist worldview how is that possible? And even if our mind could come to some conclusion, why should we trust it? Just curious as to what your thoughts might be.
Your question is suggesting that god influence our reason and logic? that doesn't make sense. Why is it so important for this god that I believe in him? why is it your job to try to convince me? I was a christian all my life, and all I remember is just me and my thoughts about god. his voice in my brain was imagined, just like all our thoughts are. I can trust my logic and reason because that is what I have in my brain. As long as it is HONEST.
NOT believing in something is NOT a philosophy. Gee, go figure. To sum it up, he basically said he was not smart enough to determine what is moral and what is not on his own. We don't have to agree upon anything, except that we don't believe in god. Hated enemies? Oh BTW, I tried that little "challenge" years ago, and nothing happened. Not even a lame coincidence like he had. I'm sure his diet and the doctors didn't have an impact on any of it. He got the answer he wanted to hear.
Whether he did or did not achieve that understanding of "what is moral" would it not be more consistent with atheistic reasoning to state that he uses a tool (belief in God) to JUSTIFY what he already understands of morals and has that intelligence you claim (he imputed) that he lacked. The alternatives are that God exists to somehow instill that moral understanding as Wright claims OR that Wright's ostensible growth in moral wisdom is not real in line with God's not being real.
@naejimba you said: "To sum it up, he basically said he was not smart enough to determine what is moral and what is not on his own"....
I don't think he said this at all. You say "he got the answer he wanted to hear". It seems more like, "you're hearing what you want to hear him say".
Also, is it good for us to determine what is moral and what is not? I don't think you really feel that way. When someone cheats you do you think "shucks! I wish he came upon moral conclusions similar to mine"
Prayer, and meditation are aligned with universal laws. They dont have anything to do with any particular religion.Religions are yesturdays illussions.Time to wake the sheeple to the fact of spiritual responsability.Religions suck!
Yes religion sucks! But Christianity is not a religion it is an actual relationship with God, and many people think christianity is just a bunch of rituals and stuff, wrong!! Christianity is far away from religion but unfourtunately through the years people have twisted that into religion.
@188metalhead881 That doesn't sound right. Early Christians were very much sacramental. You're saying that people have twisted this personal relationship with God into these religious practices. But it should be evident it's the other way around. The religious practices/ sacramental actions were foundational early on (and amongst Catholics today), but the faith-free evangelical approach is more the modern "twister of true Christianity".
@jorgekluney Catholics twisted the Gospel, the bible doesn't say "Worship the virgin Mary" or "You can buy your way into heaven" like catholics say you can, in the middle ages, catholics were often told: "If you kiss this holy piece of a relique, then you can make your way into heaven" or "If you pay this price with gold, then you can enter heaven". The bible doesn't say anything like that.
@jorgekluney You're getting me all wrong, what I'm saying is that cathics introduced things that are not mentioned in the bible, therefore twisting what God said in the bible, God says: Thou shall not bowdown or WORSHIP ANY OTHER GODS, but Me, cathics see Mary as a kind of a goddess, asking her favors and stuff, and The Almighty God says that there's no other god but Him.
But I get your point, I don't have anything against services and stuff, the bible says they are needed.
Catholics don't worship Mary. Venerate and ask for intervention on behalf of, sure... but worship? No.
Also, it was the Catholic Church that gave us the first cannon of Scripture. Tradition precedes Scripture. Catholics appreciate this but Protestants (of whatever stripe) don't. But it's the truth - Tradition gave us Scripture.
There actually have been studies done on the effects of prayer. Turns out that people who received prayer had more complications than those who did not.
This person though talented in sci-fi writing, is very ignorant in the basic values of humanity, none which require a supernatural dictator. He's an outspoken homophobe as well, hinting that this ignorance is willful. Very sad.
