im sorry but i think the sh201 gets way too bad rep online and i dont know why!!i certainly dont think the microkorg is that much better. If you really want to go on the sound of the synth, then your best to purcase a roland jp8000/8080 or korg ms2000, otherwise i think both the 201 and the microkorg have solid places(depending on what you want it for!!korgs better for hip hop/r'n'b while the roland is the house/trance king).
This is a great synth if you actually take the time to customize the sounds and experiment with the editing software that comes with it. I love my 201 and never plan to get rid of it. Even though the layout is straight forward and simple to navigate there are endless possibilities with how you can manipulate the sounds.
Sorry to say, this one doesent stand out at all, its more of an educational synth. The fact that it has all of its parameters on the front panel without menus makes editing easy.
The soundquality is another matter. Cold and distorted in a "bad" way.
Go for a second hand microkorg. Thats walue for money and exellent soundquality. You will prob. find one for around 170-200 eur.
@rcflite Microkorg sounds a lot better yeah, but it is MUCH harder to program in comparison. If you want to make a specific sound with the 201 it so easy to get it to what you want it to be. So I can agree with the general sentiment that the SH-201 is a "beginners" synth and that its sound quality has a specific feel to it (more plasticy than cold), but it becomes what you make of it! The Feedback Oscillator it's got is imho what makes the 201 unique and can give you sounds other synths cant.

What didn't you like about this synth?
I'm trying to find a good VA synth for around $500 and this is the only one that really stands out.

hi deadboy75 i was thinkin to buy a synts with this type of sounds like sh201, but 've read about your opinion, i've got to ask 2 question.
What should i take that is between the sh201 and the too much limited microkorg?
and what have you bought after this synts?
