  • Blues isn't about clean notes or fast hands or perfect technique, people who critique this guys playing simply don't understand.

  • seriously i like post hardcore and all the metal and punk but this guy is a legend he will have more talent in a pinky than you will ever have

  • a joke? Hubert Sumlin? First time i saw this guy was 2 years ago (when i was 16), and i knew instantly that he's worth more than so many other guitarists out there. He plays with soul and passion! Take all your techniques, sweep like a motherfucker - it won't compare to love and passion in the end! Even if you don't agree, he was old as hell and still played! - rip

  • There is a commercial with that famous riff he's playing is in. The original blues riff!!!

  • how can anyone dislike a man with a groove o.O... or maybe that's just me being a bassplayer... again x_x

  • Rip Hubert Sumlin, I didn't even know you as a musician or guitarist for howling wolf, but damn you have inspired me to learn more blues on guitar and become a bigger fan of blues. Great performance! This video was a greater impact on me :D

  • i dont believe it. I actually am devastated, ive been a huge fan of howlin wolf and hubert himself and have only found out the news. Man it was all such small talk for such a legend.

The blues industry has lost one of its finest.

  • And he DIDN'T use a pick !!!!

  • From Japan.

  • R.I.P.

  • Sounds like a fatr in the 10 second

  • @DeanVx0615

    lol :D

  • R.I.P Hubert....Without you, the blues , Rock n roll, MUSIC would not be the same.

  • I like this guys style

  • I know one thing, he was a happy, go-lucky guy who lived his dream, and in the end, isn't that what it is all about? Look at that guitar! How can you pick that thing up and not be happy? Which is one on Paul Reed Smith's "Words To Live By" - "I have never seen someone play the guitar who is not happy". Amen to that!

  • TAKE YOUR DISLIKES AND STUCK IT UP YOUR ARSE

  • cool

  • He was simple, humble and unpretentious. He gave his entire life to his art and was glad that young people of ANY color were continuing to love and play the blues. His playing was never "great" fron a technical standpoint but it was always true, sincere and enjoyable to listen to. Hubert was inspiring and a wonderful person.R.I.P.

  • Hubert Sumlins guitar and Howlin Wolfs voice was one of the most perfect combinations ever.. RIP and may we learn the magic that came so naturally from them!

  • awesome

  • R.I.P. Hubert....great !!

  • Another great bluesman and a wonderful character, he made you smile just by laying your eyes on him . . .

  • Really classy...to the ignorant bastards who are critical of an elder Hubert with arthritis and decades of life behind him, educate yourselves and seek out his playing in his prime: Howlin' Wolf's classic sides, etc. I'll take Hubert on "Killing Floor" over some navel gazing shredder anyday! RIP Mr.Sumlin

  • He's such a soulfully fun grandpa :)

  • ok, look away from the video, and just listen, and you will realize that what he is doing is incredibly sub-par.

  • yes sir, Mr. Sumlin sir...

  • What an absolute character this guy was! The yang to Howlin' Wolf's yin, for sure!! RIP, brother-man!

  • This man is a true original and a legend. Cretins: do some homework before you exhibit your ignorance with more disrespectful drivel.

  • My friend the guitar and so i!

  • R.I.P. Hubert Sumlin, one of the greatest blues guitar players the world ever known

  • This is not a lesson, but he's freaking great

  • When the first wheels were made they were simple with very little technology and man was happy just to roll and then came industry of the modern age but without that wheel industry would be lost or may very likely never had started

Hubert Sumlin is one of those wheels (of the blues) sure there are more complex, faster players out there but, without the likes of Hubert Sumlin there wouldn't be no Hendrix, Page, Halen, Iommi and so on.

To all you haters, show some respect for the wheels of time!

  • Amazing, RIP.

  • Too bad @fasteddie925 isn't dead instead of Mr. Sumlin. RIP and thanks to Mick and Keith. Fark.

  • @fasteddie925 you obviously dont ply guitar :) it doesnt have to be perfect or fast he good in his own right its not ''nigger lovin'' its called havin respect for a human

  • Comment removed

  • @fasteddie925

    go die.

    that is all.

  • @fasteddie925 You are truly the son of your mother and brother.

  • @fasteddie925 pure evil. thats what you are

  • @fasteddie925 Show some respect you fuckin' racist bastard. Hubert Sumlin's music was one of the reasons why Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton picked up a guitar. He inspired generations of musicians. Someone like you will never inspire anyone cause you're nothing but a respectless piece of shit.

  • R.I.P Hubert

  • Wait a minute, he's not shredding, no sweep picking or tapping and just using the pentatonic scale. Ok, he can get more feeling out of the pentatonic scale than a shredder can in a lifetime of modal noodling, but still - the pentatonic scale, that means he's shit right?

  • @jakehadlee Steve vai "for the love of god" listen to all 6 mins then tell me 'shred' can't have 'feel'

  • @jakehadlee blues players are a dime a dozen. I honestly don't see what's so good about it. Yet, I also think shredding has its limits. Malmsteen is a great example of how boring "shredding" really is. Its tasteless bullshit. Then you have others like Devin Townsend, Alan Holdsworth, Fredrik Thordendal, and Tosin Abasi who have taste in their playing and keep it interesting. Blues is just as uninteresting as malmsteen, in my opinion.

  • @nostealthebucket9009 There's a difference between what you are saying - that you're not a fan of the blues - and others saying Sumlin is crap because he plays in a simple style. I'm not a huge blues fan, but when I do listen to it I like the kind of raw, down-home style of someone like Sumlin more than the flashier guys. Just saying there's more to music than technique - much, much more.

  • well.....he knows the pentatonic scale

  • Blues in Heaven...Amen to that

  • lol, this guy can barely talk or play. this is a joke right?

  • @SuperMarioZombies show some fucking respect. Hubert Sumlin is by far one of the best blues guitarists. He just died a few days ago and your fucking disrespecting him like that? let's see how well you can play.....

  • @MATTBOESSE Surely you're kidding, right?

  • @SuperMarioZombies surely YOUR kidding......

  • @SuperMarioZombies How big is your music career? i think he did a little better than your snotty ass will ever do. Go back to flipping burgers chump.

  • @MrDoublespeak Maybe we are watching different videos. The one I watched there was this black guy that was trying to play the guitar but really couldnt. If you think that is good playing I cant help you. Sorry.

  • @SuperMarioZombies ignorant statement

  • @prsplayer210 how

  • @tearscratch31 homo

  • R.I.P. Mr. Sumlin.

  • This man dont give a shit about you kids disrespecting him. Cause hes 70 years old and has a huge black shlong that would make your emo girl friends buy a little wayne record and start smoken swisher sweets. Stop haten and learn from a man. Two thing I learnd from blues men, up pickin and open note phrazeing. See my vids. See also evh and Father Dime

  • Sorry to say I never heard of Hubert but I will look him up!! You can tell he loved what he was doing and that's the most important thing!!! Thanks for this share!!

  • da jello puddin pop

  • I don't know what to say... But I see al the video.

  • People shouldn't forget this cind of good music, and stop making shit music like justin bieber or some rap or death metal... Because blues is so happy and good sounding music, especially when it's played with guitar!

  • @97MrSlash You, my friend, are closed minded. I like blues, i don't know much about it tho, i also like rap and metal (except for death metal or black metal) Rap is ok, metal is really good, it requires talent to play a solo, it also takes talent to rap. So don't call that shit music, it's just that you don't like it, that's all. About bieber, yeah i hate him too, but you shouldn't say they should stop making music, some people like it and that isn't wrong at all

  • @AmigoFiell Haha I still say that rap is shit in my opinion but i like metal very much, but not death metal.

  • Hubert jammin. lmao

  • for all you kids who think this is a joke our sucks remember he never had guitarworld or youtube when he was 14... the only thing wrong with this mans laying is that it led the way to the crap you hear today

  • @bluesBro18 You're totally right, this is real music.

  • is this a joke ?

  • @terry1053 no, its the blues.

  • I play metalcore and you know this man is amazing his musical ideas were and many of the riffs he made lived on over the ages and found their way into different musical styles and for that I say thank you Hubert. I hope your up in the clouds pickin and grinnin. R.I.P Hubert Sumlin

  • Like Slayer but 800 times slower.

  • R.I.P.

  • is this supposed to be good?

  • @s2bHawK He was one of the old 'real' blues players. Hes got the blues sound. Hes not technically as good as todays standards, but his musical ideas are better than a lot today. Plus hes part of history.

  • @s2bHawK try playing it with the choice of notes and feeling - not just running up and down scales like a metal copy machine

  • i never knew about Hubert...he's brilliant, good sound, great time, wonderful personality.

    Eric Who? sandy in scotland

  • Seems like he had a really great personality. He would've been a real great guy to sit and jam with.

  • 10 people are sad, empty individuals who have no soul or appreciation for the blues and the greats who fueled and continue to fuel its glorious fire. Rest In Peace, Mr. Sumlin. You have gone, but your legacy and influence lives forever.

  • R.I.P. Hubert Sumlin (November 16, 1931 - December 4, 2011)

  • R.I.P.

  • 2: 40 starts a great quote.

  • Rest in Peace. Playing with a smile is not for everyone! I smiled too :)

  • I love his tune .. R.I.P

  • For some reason i was never able to get my playing away from sounding like blues. I listen to lots of metal and punk

  • 0:10 he farted.

  • sorry, but it sounds farty boring

  • Never heard of the guy. Looks like he likes that Les Paul and has fun grinnin' and pickin'. Not too sure what style this would be considered. Delta blues, perhaps?

  • @HEADBANGBALLER Kinda yea. Maybe a little bit of Chicago too.

  • . legend.

  • RIP - Man. Musician. Legend.

  • God bless you Hubert, you left us some great stuff! Rest in peace.

  • Plays the blues with the biggest smile. respect.

  • I wish there were more blues players like him nowadays

  • @AdvancedBBear Here's the thing. For every Hubert who got famous, there are a bunch of old boys around who played as good or better. Now they're all dying too from old age, but some of them are still around, and some of their 2nd generation students are taking their place, and they play damned good too. Just get out there to your local blues club. Granted there are a lot of bands who think SRV is the only blues... but there are others out there with taste too. :p

  • Most people that play twice as good don't look half as happy doing it. I wish I could learn that from him.

  • what a legend! his laughter was amazing!

  • fart at 0:10

  • DONT make em like THAT any more! Hardly ANY left! Sad!

  • Damn! I can't!

  • I wanna drink somethin with this guy! Whiskey! Coffee! I don't give a crap!

  • R.I.P Hubert :(

  • Where's the Jello pudding?

  • hahaha what a terrible tone.

but i guess it doesnt matter.

    Hes happy.

  • A definite character.

  • 0:45 can't help but laughing xD

  • Happiest guitarist alive I love this guy!

  • They need to have this guy teach more blues lessons; he's great.

  • @StewieSwan He just died yesterday, that's why they're reposting the video.

  • @CharliePutz

    Joke--->

    your head

  • @StewieSwan Maybe not your finest joke.

  • Lol no one would take this seriously if a 25 year old kid was playing this

  • @YhaoKhan

You and everyone who agreed with you "dont get it",

This is the real blues that started it all,

its authentic slave music, that then evolved into many forms.

Thats why most kids today are stuck in sweep picking arpeggios,

just copy machines seeing whos the fastest..

Thats why you will all rot in your bedrooms as unknowns trying to get a viral video.

  • @YhaoKhan Damn, don´t talk shit. The man got the tempo, the man got the feeling, the man got the dynamics. When a 25 years old kid show up playing like this, the one who think he stinks should be kicked in the ass!

  • @YhaoKhan because there is no 25 year old kid who would play like this...

  • lacks the umph :/

  • man, he can play a mean blues lick though

  • STEVE URKLE!

and a slight mixture of bill cosby on guitar

  • What a badass.

  • Hubert Sumlin was my #1 Blues influence. May he rest in peace and may his influence live on<3

  • R.I.P Hubert Sumlin :(

  • This guy rocks, clearly enjoying himself, this is how guitar should be played, with a smile on our face!

  • the tone is so unique, nothing like a typical Les Paul would sound- completely bone dry and without any boost, rawer than a Strat but wobblier than a Gretsch . What a player.

  • "This'a what I do man!" Love this guy. Rest in peace Mr.Sumlin...

  • You Need to know the history to understand that there are blues players that understand everything this man is saying...If you Don'y get it your probably feelin blue so try to express it on your axe.

  • More Muting Than A deaf & Dumb Guy

  • That was beautiful.

  • fasteddie925, you need to learn your history about blues guitar and stop the hate and racisim. Really listen to the guy's work and you will see how great of a blues player he was. Also, I hope I play that good when I am his age. Hubert is a legend and lives on. Peace to all.

  • Technical skill has nothing to do with the blues. Blues is about feeling and emotion, which he has in his playing. No one gives a shit how "bad" he is. He's famous and had a career, you haters aren't.

  • I had no idea Bill Cosby played guitar!?

  • @fasteddie925 he was one of the biggest influences in music, and more talented than you will ever be.

  • @fasteddie925 Nobody and I mean nobody wants to hear that racist crap. Anyone can learn a technical skill and become proficient. There are few that can learn how to play the blues. Get a clue man.

  • @fasteddie925 i doubt you'll ever be good at guitar if your musical philosophy is racist shlock. Just know, people like hubert sumlin, chuck berry, jimmy hendrix, and tom morello are guitar legends that happen to be black.

You? well, you're the 925th fastest eddie on youtube. congrats

  • @fasteddie925 commit suicide please. the world would be a better place without you.

  • I believe he played with Howlin Wolf. RIP sir.

  • You are greatly miss Hubert.

  • never heard of this guy before now. but he seemed awesome! R.I.P

  • Holy crap playing blues Is really hard!!!

  • what a bad ass! god i love him!

  • LOVE THIS MAN ALREADY !!!

  • Please, GuitarWorld, more. This man was a hero to me. I learned to play his stuff when I was just learning, listening to my grandmother's records. I know you may not listen to these comments, but please. There is so little of this man and his spirit, and we could all use more of that. I think we can all agree he was a joyful and giving man of character and talent, and we can't let the blues die.

  • this guy made me smile :)

  • You will be missed. May you rest in peace Mr. Sumlin.

  • where is the lesson???

  • Its all in the fingers but my favourite sound is at 4:06. RIP.

  • He sure knows how to wear that hat man...

  • this has put the biggest smile on my face

  • oh no he's dead!!!!

  • This dude is awesome :) RIP brother

  • ima be a good boy so I can meet him in heaven :)

  • @secretagentYTer the smiley was supposed to be modest hope, but it doesnt look like it oops :/

  • see you in Heavan Hubert.

  • 0:35 ... It's like they threw Bill Cosby, Steve Urkel, and Albert King into a blender ... awesome.

  • he will be missed,

  • R.I.P!!!!!!!

  • Yeah!

  • i like these old videos! moaarrr!!

  • RIP Hurbert's not dead he's just teaching god how to play guitar!

  • ahah this guy is the MAN.

  • Love the style, blues done right sings.

  • We love you, Hubert. RIP.

  • How old is this?

  • This is a fucking epic time machine of a video.

  • You know I was about to say I dont see it. But at around 3:00 he nailed blues man. Like properly. And he sounds damn funny.

  • Him and Wolf is as legendary as u get.

  • He died on my birthday :( He seemed like a real joy to be around.

  • :06 "welcome to Guitar One"....wrong magazine hubert

  • @88segovia correct magazine. Guitar One got bought by Guitar World. I used to subscribe to Guitar One. It was as good if not better than guitar world

  • @88segovia he meant something along the lines of "welcome to guitar 101"
