Silent hill isn't really a way to help the main characters. In the second game, the town serves as hell for James. Maria is conjured up as an alternate "Mary" and killed repeatedly to torture James. In all the other games, the main characters are attracted and trapped in the town of Silent Hill (and surrounding areas as in SH4) because of the local worshipers.

Nuh uh. You act as if the town is a living thing. It isn't. The phenomenon of creating Otherworlds, and having a strong enough influence to have others see it is common in the SH universe. SH has a very bad history, and thus, worlds were made to escape it. PH is James' desire to self punish, and Maria is the opposite. The worshippers have NOTHING to do with it.

basically from what I've gather silent hill (the town) is a way to help the main character deal with their problems ie.sh2 James could not get over his late wife so silent hill created maria.
