Margaret is the only one who can sing these songs!! I wish other people would not try and sing them because they ruin the songs!! RIP MARGARET SINGANA!!!
one of the best songs ever written, I love everything about South Africa, the music, the people, and the culture, as a young kid growing up in Nigeria, I remember watching Ipi tombi perform at the Festac 77 in Lagos Nigeria (1977), they stole the show, together with Miriam Makeba, RIP Margaret Singana, and Miriam Makeba.
I saw that show in '74 in London. In 1976-77 I worked in South Africa for my studies for 3 months near Tzaneen than I went back to Europe. After finishing my studies I moved to South Africa because this continent goes into your blood and you can not get it out.
Wow, the memories! My dad who was living at the time in Ivory-Coast in the early 80s loved the Ipi Ntombi's play so much that we went to see it 3 times.
Saw the original cast in Vegas at the old Silverbird Hotel n the late 70's. AWESOME show, totally mind-blowing. Even hung out with the cast...it was so great. They were very pleasant, loving people who really adored their country and their music. I'll really cherish those moments...it was truly a pleasure to have seen this show with the original broadway cast...Thanks Ipi Tombi.
Saw the original show 40 years ago in London, bought the album ,lent it to someone and never seen it since. Now live in Isla Margarita, venezuela,so a bit isolated. Thank God for u tube and your contributions ! Alan
@alankwood I saw it at The Whitehall Theatre too. I have the vinyl album but it's a bit worn. Can't believe it's not available on cd - hearing this bought a tear to my eye. Ta Bidybi !
Great to see someone has Ipi NTombi.. Back in the 80's I think, my older brother and cousins went to their concert when they visited NZ. The definatley had the cassettes. I would love to know where I can buy the CD's of those old tapes. some one out there must have them,,,,
omg! i loved this song from the musical! aww it brings back memories :( i had the video of the play recorded on vhs! but the tape got lost when i moved
Wow, great, fond memories of days long gone by... I'm PRETTY sure that if someone were to sort out legal rights, an MP3 version of Ipi 'NTombi *Original Cast* would sell (legitimate) BIGTIME on the web, similar to Ronald Jenkees is doing. Any takers??
WOW WOW WOW I love this my my support worker is from south Africa she member this I have not seen much dancing around my home like this before Its brilliant I love this myself I am bouncing on the bed lol
I, a white American, taught in West Africa for nearly 5 years, and fell in love with Africa. The play Ipi Ntombi was so popular in Britain in the late 70s. It is such a celebration of the African spirit. Woza! Bayete!
I came across this song by accident, as I searching for another African song. On hearing the first few seconds of the song I knew I had found a diamond. What a voice what a song. I have never heard of this song or singer before, please can someone out there tell me where I can get a CD of this song. and also can someone post a brief history of the singer. Thank for posting , I just found a Gem.
1. Born Margaret Mcingana in 1938 in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, "she came to Johannesburg to find work, but not as a singer --because then she had not been aware of the success awaiting her as a singer-. Instead she found work as a domestic servant and it was while she used to do the household chores of scrubbing floors and washing dishes and doing the laundry that she would while away her time singing." Cont.
Rori001- Thank you so much for posting my request for a brief history of Margaret Mcingana, very much appreciate. Mama Tembu"s Wedding, has to be the best African song ever.
2. "Eventually, her employers heard her singing and so impressed were they that they recorded her singing and sent the tape to a record company; she was discovered by the producers of the musical 'Sponono', written by Alan Paton, in which she was given a part as a chorus singer in 1964. The musical toured America, with Maragaret, and following that she appeared in Gibson Kente's 'Sikalo' stage musical." Cont.
3. "In the seventies, she became the lead singer for 'The Symbols', with whom she recorded the 'Good Feeling' single which reached No.2 on the old LM hit parade. Then came 1974 and the musical 'Ipi Ntombi' for which Margaret Singana recorded the single 'Mama Thenbu's Wedding', which hit through for her onto the white market, as she was known previously largely only to black listeners." Cont.
4. Via the soundtrack album and the immensely successful show both in South Africa and in England, America and Australia, her rise to international acclaim as 'Lady Africa' was rapid." Cont. Her 1977 hit 'I Never Loved a Man' was the Radio 5 Top Hit of the year and the British publication 'Music Week' voted her 'Star Of The Year'. Through her success, she managed to break down several racialistic barriers as she became the first black singer to appear on SABC-TV Pop Shop." Cont.
5. "She performed to white audiences and her albums were bought both by black and white consumers, albums like 'Tribal Fence' and 'Lady Africa' from which many of the tracks on this CD come. Unfortunately, her status as 'Lady Africa' was threatened by stroke she had in 1980. She did make a wonderful comeback to singing with the theme to 'Shaka Zulu' --We are growing', but she was unable to maintain her recording output." Cont.
I have never been to South Africa as a Nigerian-American. But I don't know why South Africa has a special place in my soul. Was it because of their apartheid experience? Or because of the Madiba himself Pa. Mandela? Whatever the reasons are the feelings will remain unchangeable for these are Great people. God Bless Soth Africa. God Bless the World.
Holy moly - I was 6 when this came out, and I was actually visiting family in Africa. We'd dance to this song all the time. Actually, we'd hustle. : )
Oh my what a ride. Unforgettable vocals. Margaret Singana deserves a position amongst the continent's legends. She endured muc oppression when she was refused much of the royalties and direct earnings due to her super talent. Unbelievable how many like her survived the scourge of Apartheid. I grew up listening to this music as youngster in the 1980s. She is Lady Africa. It was a pleasure to see her perform live.
