Whilst I understand the need for timber, there are ways to do it sympathetically and sustainably, without destroying crucial habitats. I've spoken to the "culprits" and they are clearing an "area" to coppice oak! Clueless! I'm going to offer my services so they aren't "chainsaw happy", and are working safely. You don't meet many people who've had chainsaw accidents! Fingers crossed I can teach them how to care for Slade wood, and make them appreciate what they have and their duty of care for it.
I've worked in forestry & woodland management, but what I've witnessed has been commercial logging & enviromental vandalism! I live next to woodland, which is being vandalised (allegedly coppiced) by kids who can't tell the difference between Oak & Cherry! Mature healthy ash, oak, hazel, hawthorn, yew(cut down for xmas trees!!!) broom,& many more are gone. Human beings are dumbest species on the planet, no other destroys it's environment. Good on you mate.
@daveglastonbury thanks mate - still cross about it even now... the damage is done now - and now they have moved on to some other woodland and done the same thing... at Thurlbear Wood - the lot has been knocked down.... humans crap in their own nest the only species that do.
I think the Neroche Scheme have done excellent work at making the forest area more accessible- there are still plenty of 'wild and natural' areas, there are now also great tracks and paths for those with physical disabilities still allowing them to enjoy the beauty of the area without trying to walk in mud! It is also excellent for horse riders. The forests and woodlands have to be maintained- and these guys are qualified professionals!
not enough people care - its all about money and convenience - maybe if the tories get in our so called woodland management organisations will get thinned out - not that i endorse voting convservative at all..
This sort of thing is happening on a massive scale all over the country. I live on Exmoor and am sick of all the lies about bio-diversity etc... Woodland is being cut down for no real reason. And 'THEY' tell US to worry about OUR 'Carbon Footprint'. Why don't 'THEY' stop cutting down trees and let them do their job. Who gave them permission to vandalise the country..?
Who's keeping an eye on these so-called "commissions" and "trusts" that wreck our forests and mis-spend public money? Whenever I phone them up I'm told the person I need to speak to is on holiday or unavailable...!!!? I did get through on one occassion and was told the deer and natterjacks need the space!
I can understand thinning, improvement and forest management but the way it has been done is probably the issue. It looks like a war scene with the destruction of the paths, trees lying across paths, tractor tracks upto a metre deep virtually unwalkable and criss-crossed through the wood. Will you leave it respectable when finished? It could take a long time to recover because of the way it has been done. The Herepath trail, just opened, and so near Castle Neroche, has been temporarily spoiled.
(part 2) There has been between 25 - 30% taken out favouring the good quality hardwwod - hardly destruction! When the work is finally finished the footpaths will be fully re-instated and improved by us and the Forestry commission who has spent thousands of pounds allowing the public to walk through their beautiful woodlands. I am sorry you feel like this but we do not have any complaints from anyone else.
This was the only way I thought my complaint would be heard it wasn't heard the last time - I did email the forestry commission but no response. Have you asked anyone how they feel about the woodland now you have improved it. Why do we always have to improve the woodland - yes get rid of dangerous trees, the Rhododendrons and rotten trees but...
To be honest there is no point now the damage is done - you can't re-grow the trees.
ha ha ! you berk! ......."you can't re-grow the trees" ( a lot of which are plantation on what was open ground 100 yrs ago) this news that trees wont grow might effect the forestry commission business plans a bit!! .....still never mind the bleeding tories are about to privatize the lot so enjoy it while you can
You've spent THOUSANDS OF POUNDS to let us walk through our own forests...? I think we're quite capable of making our own way through woodland thank you and so are the animals that live there. We don't want manmade footpaths. The whole point of woodlands is to escape man...
This woodland has been thinned for improving the ongoing management of the forest and to let more light in for the quality trees left. I have been thinning woodland for years for private estates, Fountain Forestry and Forestry Commission so we do not wreck woodland - only impove it. For your information there are no Pines in the area you filmed, only Western Red Cedar, which some were rotten and was a safety issue for the public, Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, and Beech. (part 1)
i think you'er find the tree's have to be thined to let the other tree's grow and mature, if left they would not have the room to grow!
if you ask around you'er find that the wood was last thined 9 to 10 years ago! and didn't take 30 to 50 years to recover that time!! PLEASE FIND OUT YOU'ER FACTS FIRST!!!!
I dont need to ask around I have been walking there over 25 years and well remember what happened 9 years ago.
I remember the 10 years before that and every time it gets more excessive.
Yes, the trees need thinning but not at the expense of the small trails that ran through the woodland now turned into large tractor width thoroughfares.
Last time nowhere near as many trees were cut down. I believe more have been cut down than were destroyed in the October storm of 87.
I dare say you can now ride your horse around without any fear of being knocked off by a low hanging branch. I also assume you are a responsible local landowner.
@woofwoofwatch My horse ridding as nothing to do with the casle neroche woodland or you!!!!!!!!! but just so you know that yes i'm a very responsible land owner as i cut down any low branches or tree's i don't like ON MY LAND!!!!!!!!! also as a girly tree surgeon i believe that what the forstery comission are doing is MAKING THEM SAFE FOR EVERYBODY TO ENJOY!!!
this woodland is and as not been recked and them tree's that are down were not 100s of years old but about 30 to 50 years old!!!!!!!!!!! and the woodland has not been finished yet so you can't these nasty comment's wait untill it's finished!!! then your find it will be just as pretty as before!!!!!!!!!!!!! getting fact's right before posting this would have been a much better idea!
Well it might be finished in 30 to 50 years time but i wont be here then and nor will alot of people who have enjoyed the woodland over the years. Which is the main point.

We have similar feelings regarding the destruction of Buckland Woods on the Blackdown Hills.
Maybe we could colaborate and make a film for a wider audience? Noonburrow.

25-30% every 9-10 years - clearance - if the oldest trees are indeed 50 years old not sure how that is sustainable.
Finally - the forestry commission is a government organisation paid for by - us, the taxpayers to safe guard our beautiful forests in the UK.
