Haha I would die if I didn't have marjoram on hand. I use it in almost everything. Sauces, bread, omelets, whatever. I think the one thing in my cabinet that I haven't seen anyone else use is Mongolian Fire Oil from House of Tsang.
My spice MESS is like yours, NO pretty fancy bottles, we just use the original packaging, and it's wherever it is in the pantry. At least we cram it all in the same area.
I have the same oil too and keep in the fridge, it will go rancid very quickly once it is opened if not. Thinking the bottle says to put in fridge too.
Sorry, Jack. Youtube refuses to allow my video response to show up. I bet others are having a similar problem. Arggg. You'll have to check my channel directly if you want to see it. The one you want is "Jack Response Video."
At any rate, I enjoyed seeing your spice cabinet...
Sorry Jack, but my shelf only has super generic stuff like Cinnamon, black pepper, allspice, salt, basil, oregano, and nutmeg and garlic. WOuldnt be much of a show. Lol. Though I bet few people have a canister of Five spice in their shelf/rack/cabinet. You should get some, makes oriental food have a zing.
My pick is Orange Peel. Who has that? Add to marinades for pork, chicken and duck. Stir into bbq sauces. Add to cake, muffin, waffle, pancake, french toast and quick bread batters. Stir into yogurt, warm syrups or honey butter.
Marjoram is used a lot in French cooking, but the plant is related to oregano, so they can usually be substituted for each other in recipes!
I think we have even more spices than you- luckily a few years ago we took the time to make special spice-bottle sized shelves to fit in our cabinet... We must have the whole Penzey's catalogue in there! Za'atar, epazote, even chocolate mint from our garden! We have pretty much everything...
I not only HAVE marjoram, I grow it, dehydrate it and actually use it. Someone mentioned that it was famous in Germany, I don't know about that but I'm really German and I love it. I don't articularly like oregano so I use marjoram instead.
@jakatak69 asafoetida is its real name but also known as devils dung cuz of its strong smell,, i am taking culinary class and my chef gave me some its a spice usually found in indian food or currys
Jack, I see you shop at Smart and Final as well! : )
I actually avoid those tiny McCormick containers. Many of the same spices can be bought at hispanic supermarkets and 99cent Only stores for a fraction of the price.
Marjoram is great spice on the outside of a "beer can chicken", as well as stews.
McCormick does kick ass on Lawry's and old El Paso for things like taco mixes and meat seasonings, because they generally use fewer amounts of cheap-o corn starch and salt.
A hell of a lot tidier than mine! Since I'm a student (explanation for the messiness!) everything I don't keep in the fridge/freezer is in one cupboard, so probably the weirdest thing I have in my spice cabinet is some bread, or possibly a bottle opener...(what kind of student would I be without a bottle opener always on hand huh?).
Thats not that messy! Well stocked obviously a man of superior breeding!
