@Ghlargh you are right, but I always seem to be too much Scrooge McDuck to get one. I have an Ersa 30W Iron around but I killed the tip, gotta get a new one.
Had one of them built (V-usb version) but well, I just wanted the jtag and HV-prog capability.
Do not go backwards to PIC go upwards to cortex M3 the STM32Discovery board is only 11$ now.
I made the same mistake with a low cost Thin Client PC Station that I purchased with about 50$ before finding out about raspberry pi it has about the same CPU ARM11 800MHz and everything is supplied from 5V.
I reduced the 5V to see how low will it work and what is the influence in power consumption and magic smoke appeared :) The 1.2V regulator is dead now but the rest is working, bad design.
@electrodacus don't worry, I won't go pic! :D Like you said last time, the raspberry board is awesome, it is on my shopping list already. Avoiding this kind of problem with the negative enforcement is on my things to learn about list....
@sonodrome lol, yeah my YL did a great job on that :) Yeah I knew, that there were issues with the dragon but I thought, that this was fixed in my version 2 of the board - obviously not.
You really need a proper regulated soldering iron...
Also, if you don't need the debugging features, you can get a USBasp AVR ISP programmer for $4 including shipping on ebay.

I've got a dragon board. I got it from Atmel at one of their workshops. I don't ever use it but I'll have to remember this.

Lol - your impression of a drunk was hilarious!
With make-up you look a bit like a drunken Emo/Goth ;)
Wow the Dragon's power circuitry looks like a pretty bad design, I can't believe how easy it was to slay.
