Suburu (Fuji heavy industries) Has been making diesels for many years, just not for passenger cars, I hope they get these into production and in the US market. This engine sounds great, and I'm sure the torque will be incredible. After driving a 1.3L turbodiesel SEAT around in england earlier this year, I was very impressed with what it could do, and more impressed with it's nearly 60 MPG! Bring it on, Suburu!
YES! now all i need to do is find a way to get one sent to the US and mount it in my 93 legacy. (no emissions testing for my year car here!!!) what the insurance dosn't know wont hurt em')
two small VNT turbos, one on each bank. They would respond and boost much better then a waste gated turbo. With common rail injection, the tuning potential is huge.
@ zhammmy. Think of the potential such an engine would have if it were offered in this country. I have a friend who owns a VW Vanagon Diesel, with an inline 4 turbo diesel. That engine only puts out 85hp, probably 130 ft-lbs. of torque. Now, imagine the Subaru Boxer Diesel engine in the back of that same Vanagon Diesel, with 140-145 hp and 255+ lbs-ft of torque! I don't know how fast the vehicle would be capable of going with the engine
Diesel engines produce more torque at low rpm, they get better fuel economy than a similar sized gasoline engine, and with the boxer diesel engine, you get all that, and a lower centre of gravity, which contributes to better handling. I hope the engine makes it to North America soon. I see no reason why it shouldn't be here.
@Seattlecarnut , I know, I would insist on that diesel engine too, if I were to get a new Subaru where I live(New Jersey). I want turbo diesel for my next Subaru!
It's not stupid. Diesel makes more torque.. key would be making use of that toque effectively. Also the fuel savings would reduce the number of stops.. saving time.. which is how rally's are won.
A diesel powered car almost wont the Indy 500 one year, a breakdown forced them out. The league quickly banned them. They almost won by not having to stop as often.
Fuel economy plays no part in world rally championship events. There are stages and stops at the end of them at no time ever have there been timed fuel stops, so that blows the rather silly concept of diesel rally cars out of the window.
I don't see any diesels cars in formula one where fuel is an issue, primarily because speed and performance are a requirement for winning, just like rallys.
Yes we were talking about fuel economy, but YOU were the one that mentioned a diesel did not have the power or performance to compete. obviously they DO...AND the get the mileage too.
Now YOU go away.. and drive your little 4 banger.. while I drive my 15 LITER tractor.
oh and by the way, you're gonna need 15 litres to get your 10horsepower because cooking fat has no calorific value.
I can just see you on the M25 causing a 50mile tailback and a cloud of sooty smoke the size of the mount st helen's eruption, and the best thing of all, you are under the mistaken belief its cool and fast - FAIL... LOL
I was sourcing parts one day for a fellow who was/had put a WRX motor in a VW Combi. Now THAT's a granny's car that can carry stuff, AND be quicker than you would ever initially imagine. In a straight line anyway!
@buhrietoe in most/all petrol applications...but most or all diesles in tractors, trucks (semi's) earth moving power generators and such there is no wastegate... the turbo is sized to what boost/power is wanted in the engine and to its opperating RPM and also with diesel's leaning them out just makes them have less power and run colder to make power fuel is added not air....the throttle on most diesel's is on the diesel injection pump.
Looking like something grandma drives is a bonus, actually. You can actually haul stuff with it, some can go offroad (I drive mine on logging roads), and you can speed like there's no tomorrow, and not get a ticket. I made eye contact with a police officer while going 95 in a 55 zone, and nothing happened. That was when I was 19, I no longer do that. :p

Shit the turbo must be close to the ground hanging at the bottom of the engine.

because its a tractor engine and thats where it should stay.
peterfarrow 2 years ago
wonder will they used this to run the wrc car, if subaru go back to the WRC..???
bluetaxi01 2 years ago
don't be stupid its a diesel, they would only put this in a rally shell if there were points for coming last.
Its a bus engine, get real...

You mean like the Audi R10 TDI??? that has won the LeMans EVERY YEAR since 2005??
Pretty sure that is a race...
And pretty sure the car has PLENTY of performance.
kens97sto171 2 years ago
We are talking about world rally championships here, not the lemans 24hours drive-a-thon.. check the posts if you are unsure.
stay on topic.... so yes, fuel economy plays NO PART in world rally championship races,
So yes, its a VERY STUPID idea to think you can win a world rally champion ship in diesel....
now go away and drive your tractor...

A wastegate IS required to limit boost and keep the turbo in a more efficient operating range.

I hope they leave room in the chasis to swap out the OE turbo for a BIG Garret turbocharger and wastegate. Awesome!!

suit me.170bhp+50 mpg + 4x4 would be enough,
I don't care if it looks like something your
