  • @zaxtor I think it's around 11-12 years old. It came from a pc that was built in 1999.

    That's long.

    My oldest 11 was a Fujitsu and 1999.

    No longer use it tho since early 2010 but still works.

  • @Armaangandevia1 I think the pc was around 10 years old, but I think the HD was already starting to fail when it was 9 years old (much slower response, more noise from HD).

  • i hear the head contacting the platter then the drive tries to read then shuts off.... a faint scraping which might be where it needs to read but it cant cos its corrupted there with the damanged platter

  • @Watcher3223 The first beep is indeed the POST beep. But the second is, because it's an old pc, a warning because ps/2 keyboard was not connected. Did you know that this pc wasn't working when I got it? I thought it was the power supply, I bought a new one, but even with that it won't boot. A couple of weeks later I needed a pc battery so I took it out of this pc. But it wasn't working, so after all, it was the dead battery that caused the problem!

  • I can hear it, when it's about to shut off, the spindle motor starts making a WEweWEwe noise at a fast pace. Basically the normal sound but fluctuating. I dunno if that has anything to do it but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

    Probably from the computer; the POST beep.

    But the other beeps might be indicating a CMOS error, likely due to a dead battery.

    And, it sounds like the hard drive has servo problems; the platters and heads may be okay, but the electronics may have problems.

  • i think its an electronics issue if its actually trying then messing up then its tell the electronics to have it restart once but the electronics are damaged so its repeats this step. try leaving it on for a night or two see if it stops

  • Sounds like the servo Circuit is dead

  • Well if it wasn't dead before it is dead now. A couple of particles of dust are all it takes to crash a head, and running a drive without a cover outside of a clean room is a super risky thing to do.

  • i had 1 of these and had the same problem...they get stupidly hot when playing and they quit playing i went through 3 hhd in a month...i then stuck a cheap fan above it to clear the heat and never had the problem since

  • once you've exposed the tracks to the open air it's obviuosly not going to work. anything as small as a smoke particle will cause a head crash

  • I have this HDD too. She has 1,3GB and is the loudest (Normal) HDD ive ever seen

  • head crash. 0:42, you can clearly hear the heads scratching along the platters, and i spins down to protect itself, then try's again. I have one of these drives. It has 5 or 6 bad sectors though, but they're not used. Good drive though

  • could be a controller failure... i even had this with an st380215a, but it still works fine... just check the controller and the cables

  • break the chip on the moving arm. it'll keep running but you wont be able to take anything off of it :D if it still doesn't run, pull the cables off the arm.

  • i hear a head crash in the beginning of the video the sound of the heads touching the surface.. could be why its shutting off.. can't read...

  • You mean the rattle noise? That's normal for this harddisk, it's just checking it's sectors quickly, and it always made this noise.

  • not the rattle noise it sounds like the head touched the platter momentarily and it cant read. I know the rattle noise u mean is a initilization.. reading the zero track... it just sounds like the head is barely touching the platters...

  • I can hear it too. It's a high pitched noise, quite difficult to hear.

    If this drive has MR or GMR read heads, then a head crash will overheat the heads and then it can't read. Normally that condition is temporary though so I don't know...

  • EDIT: You should see my other video: 'Seagate & Maxtor HDD boot'. Back then the harddisk was working correct, but it also made that noise.

  • Poor motor is struggling to maintain rotational speed...ahh the days before fluid bearings

  • Hard drives look so nice and shiny when you open them :-)

  • CAN BE the heads scratching just the inner part of the hdd. the hdd "feels" something wrong and turns the motor off, then tries to restart and look if it works again.

  • Could be a faulty power connection or the hard drive's circuitboard/motor failing.

  • How do you open that Seagate???

  • i think there are no screws, just try to remove the glue-stripe at the side (on it you can read warranty void if removed)... i have a similar seagate but i won´t open it because its really cool

  • You're right, there are no screws. It's a strong glue stripe. ( But I still think it isn't an ideal way to seal a harddisk...)
